Hey CGL, time for some real talk.

How do you feel when female cosplayers are considered to be "fakes", deemed they must know nothing about comics, and are simply "fake geek girls"?

What do you think of girls who cosplay "slutty" characters without much (or any) interest in the actual series they're from?

How do you feel about female cosplayers who are subjected to a level of misogynistic outrage and harassment based on their outfit (whether they are actual fans of the character, or simply doing it for attention)?

I look down on anyone who uses their sexuality to gain attention and validation from people they have no intention of having sex with and barely know.

Nothing personal, but it's a fucked up thing and another fucked up part of our whole "fame cult" society. I hate facebook, too.

It weirds me out equally when females cosplay male characters they find attractive in order to take photos of or create yaoi-related situations in character.

Some of the people who make these costumes still work really hard on them. For me it's more the fact that it wouldn't matter if they worked hard, they'd still get attention and validation and be told they were great cosplayers anyway because people want to fuck them. That's weird.

I would be more likely to just avoid these people than anything, though. If I was going to protest or start shit I'd try to get "swimsuit cosplay contests" shut down in my local cons. Be honest. This event is never about the cosplay. AT ALL.

>How do you feel when female cosplayers are considered to be "fakes", deemed they must know nothing about comics, and are simply "fake geek girls"?
I've never met a "fake geek girl." Could be that I am talking to the wrong people though. If they are really as bad as rumor says I probably wouldn't like them, but I find it hard to believe someone would fake being into something with absolutely no knowledge of the subject!

>What do you think of girls who cosplay "slutty" characters without much (or any) interest in the actual series they're from?
In general I feel slutty versions of characters is just someone being lazy. Very rarely is it done well, or in a way that really shows that they thought about the character.

I don't mind people cosplaying something they don't have an interest in. They may just be joining friends or liked the costume design. I'm trying to encourage some friends now to join me in a VLR cosplay group, because they fit the characters and it'd be great to have a couple more people.

It's important to realize that people choose to cosplay for different reasons, and that you can't expect everyone who is cosplaying to be a super fan just as you can't expect everyone at the convention to like anime/comics/etc.

> How do you feel about female cosplayers who are subjected to a level of misogynistic outrage and harassment based on their outfit (whether they are actual fans of the character, or simply doing it for attention)?

Not something I really see but I can see it from both sides. From the geeky side, and often the "male" side, they're upset that their fandom is being exploited for attention or other reasons. In some cases it's disheartening because you try to have a conversation with the person, and you find out that the person dressed as your favorite character actually knows nothing at all.

From the other perspective, nobody should be attacked for their cosplay choice - it's a hobby and it's what they decided to put their money into.

Before I tried cosplaying I didn't really get why people did it. But after I cosplayed for the first time it clicked, it's truly all about attention. I have a penis and even I'll admit that being in costume and having random people come up to give you high fives, compliments, and snap a picture is like a pure adrenaline shot to the ego. There is another component however, and that's passion. Passion is what makes beautiful cosplay that people remember for a lifetime. While people who tend to cosplay more popular characters get more attention, it isn't necessarily ethical to simply cosplay popular characters to get said glorious attention. One's personal passion should be the source of inspiration for the costume.

It's hard for a guy to have a costume that will pop with the audience. Men don't have nearly as many resources to make that sort of crowd pleasing costume. They can't just show some midriff and suddenly everyone will love them. They have to craft complicated and accurate outfits to stand out as much as most female cosplayers do. Men who are 'fake nerds' usually wouldn't even bother with cosplay in the first place since it takes so much effort. But with women, it's easy to just pick a character that's popular and cute and get that glorious attention for little to no effort.

If you don't like them, don't give them the attention. Only ask for pictures from the most well crafted outfits, male or female. Encourage your passionate friends to make those hard or underdone costumes that people maybe didn't know they wanted to see. Maybe you won't get as much attention as a hand crafted Akari from Aria as you would as ebay bought Madoka, but cosplay should always be for the passion first, the attention should just be a bi-product of the passion.

It seems that everyone wants to classify what being a "nerd" is. Like you have to pass a test and like the approved subjects in order to be able to grace yourself with the name "nerd".

Why is everyone supposed to like the exact same shit, like some tumblr whores calling another girl 'fake' because she doesn't like Doctor Who, or a girl saying 'I play Mario, omg I'm such a nerd!"

So, identifying with a certain clique/subculture is bad?

Thank for the insight.
>>
Holy shit you are not getting oppressed because you want to take interest in something you don't know anything about and people are treating you badly. This only happens because you're entering a fandom with little to no knowledge of it and simply barging in with pseudo-knowledge instead of saying that you have an interest in the the. Don't say "I love video games" when you don't know anything about them and can't back yourself up in an argument or discussion about them. Say "I'd love to learn about video games!", and people will be warmer to you. The people who are nasty to you either way are the ones you don't associate yourself. It's as simple as that.

Bitches need to learn what the word oppression means, too. Oppression is being treated cruelly or unfairly for a long period of time, not being called a "fake nerd" or an idiot or something.

Oh for fuck's sake!
I play D&D. I go to SCA meetings occasionally. I go to cons. No one is saying you aren't legitimately interested in whatever you are interested in.

The problem is twofold-

Right now, many aspects of geek culture are becoming more and more popular with many people. Many people of either gender who basically like the "thing of the moment" to be included will move on from those things in a year. Many of them are like new users to a website- they don't know the etiquette and they don't respect people who've been part of the community for years and are generally found to be a bit annoying at times. Some of them will go on to find a lifelong interest.

Some people, especially girls, behave like they are somehow rare for liking what they like. They are not as rare as they often think they are and to behave as if you should get a cookie or special treatment just for showing up is annoying. See also: DM's girlfriend.

Thirdly, certain people, both inside the nerd community and outside of it, define their worth as a person by how many complete strangers who they will never have any real interest in wanting to fuck find them physically attractive. Not all attractive people do this. These people are often irritating. There is a trend that gets worse every year of people assuming that if they put an attractive female in a leather outfit into something, that "nerds" are so sexually deprived that they will not care if the plot of your movie is bad or the girl you hired to work at your video game booth knows nothing about the game.

There is backlash against this idea, and people who attentionwhore massively and just assume nerds can't get any girl as attractive as them are showing a lack of respect for nerds and nerd culture. Because of this, many nerds don't respect them, either.
>>
>>6564977
Nobody gives a fuck if you're a girl, though. I've never got shit for being a girl and liking video games. You're obviously being obnoxious and raising suspicion about how much you legitimately know.
>>
>>6564977
You shouldn't have to identify yourself as anything just because you like some things.

I don't care if you're male or female, putting on big black rimmed glasses, writing nerd on your hand just so everyone knows what you are is fucking retarded.

"Hm, I like to play videogames, better take pictures of myself naked with a controller so everybody knows."
>>
>>6564972
I think I love you, anon. Seriously, I would make you a smoothie right the fuck now.
>>
>>6564965
I think the big thing is that a girl (or anyone, let's not just focus on women) can say "I like videogames" and the response is "OH YEAH THEN WHAT WAS THE LINEUP OF ROBOT MASTERS FROM THE FIRST MEGA MAN GAME IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER" and if the response is "I don't know, I never played mega man" then the assumption is that they never played any video game and that everything is lies when the person may not be a fan of mega man but played way too much super mario.

That said, claiming to have read / watched / played something you didn't just to be "cool" or "geeky" isn't a good idea and when you get caught in the lie you just look dumb.

Some people do, it happens here and there. A lot less now than 10 years or so ago.

I think it's really the media surrounding "nerds" and "geeks" that this really comes from and makes girls feel like they are special snowflakes. They assume it's a collective of socially awkward guys, and that if they come into it then everyone will lust after them but also be so happy that she is "a geek like them"

Big Bang Theory is one example of this.

Why not state what games you like instead of just saying "games"? Most people assume that you have a broad knowledge of games if you say that you love video games. Is it really too hard to say "I love games like Mario and Zelda" instead of just "I love video games!"? You don't just say "I love movies" if you only like action and drama, you say "I love action and drama movies". Same goes for books and tv shows. Unless you have an extremely broad knowledge of the form of media, you generally just express the specifics you like.
>>
>>6564991
I have literally never had this happen to me.
Not once.
Never.
Not when I cosplayed from an anime/manga
Nor from a comic book
Nor from a popular TV series
Nor from a book.

If you really don't think the "nerd girl culture" is seeping into non-nerd girls, take a look at the "geek" board on pinterest. It's mostly Big Band Theory and Dr. Who and Harry Potter and Disney stuff.

I'm a girl too. I have had it on one occasion at work where an older guy was transferred to our building as one of my managers. He heard from one of my work friends that I was into comics and the like. When we finally worked together he didn't believe it and quizzed me on geekyness - which ended up with me getting him into Doctor Who. Totally understand where he was coming from, he had never met a girl who liked anything the same as him. His wife is pretty, but she doesn't let him read comic books or watch any shows she doesn't like. Sucks for him.

While in cosplay I've had some people ask me obscure stuff about the character or show, but I usually let them know if I don't know the answer.

That said, my mega man example was hyperbole based on what I get of the "nerd girl issue". I don't personally consider myself a "persecuted nerd girl" or anything like that, nor do I know anyone who does.
>>
>>6565048

>His wife is pretty, but she doesn't let him read comic books or watch any shows she doesn't like. Sucks for him.

>>
>>6565037
>Why not state what games you like instead of just saying "games"?

Just an example based on the post I was responding to. Perhaps the person enjoys multiple types of videogames and multiple series and doesn't want to pidgeonhole themselves into one genre. I have a male friend who likes videogames and will say "I like videogames" and it's no understatement - he usually has about 4 or 5 on the go at a time and if he hasn't played it he has likely read up on it.

A lot of people don't automatically go into specifics, although it would save some time to start that way.
>>
>>6565052
Some people are better at compartmentalizing than others.

They probably have other things in common and it's hard to find someone who is easy to live together with and who you're attracted to.

My boyfriend doesn't like vampire stories, horror movies, fashion, or 4chan. I have these people calle friends that I can share those things with, and some of them I prefer to enjoy alone.
>>
>>6565060

Fiddle dee dee, I meant more how could you let someone dictate what comics you read? It has no impact on that person. I can understand shows, since they spend time together watching them, but comics?
>>
>>6565058
Did you even read the rest of my post? I said that unless you have a broad knowledge of games, you should probably just say what you specifically like. Sounds like your friend knows his shit about a lot of games, and I'd consider that broad knowledge.

You're right, a lot of people don't usually go into specifics. That includes people going "HURR WHERE IS EVERY STAR LOCATED IN SUPER MARIO 64" when you mention that you like games.

I think that you just rendered your own argument invalid.

Rather she doesn't support his hobby and doesn't allow room in the budget for them. He can still purchase them, he can still read them but I am guessing there is some form of repercussion that encourages him not to.

And from what I understand, when he gets into comics he likes to make large purchases on e-bay to complete his collections so the budget thing might be a big factor lol
>>
>>6564958
well, hm. i personally cosplay out of being (how do I say this without sounding special snowflakey?) dorky enough to actually want to feel like the character i'm cosplaying. i don't like myself enough to want to be my favorite fictional characters for a day. that's my take, anyway.
>>
>>6565083

Ah, that's completely reasonable then. Thank you for elaborating on the matter.
>>
>>6565073
>You're right, a lot of people don't usually go into specifics. That includes people going "HURR WHERE IS EVERY STAR LOCATED IN SUPER MARIO 64" when you mention that you like games.

It was hyperbole, it was meant to be an exaggeration. The point, or argument rather, is that some people judge others to not be nerds or geeks based on their own specific knowledge and idea of what nerds is and dismiss what the other person might know about the topic.

I don't really subscribe to the theory that guys walk around quizzing girls and getting mad when they can't respond, but it does seem to be why "nerd girls" are so upset. Basing that entirely on what I see online, never experienced it in person.

People do ask obscure questions though, particularly at cons. I think it's easy for them to assume that a cosplayer of their favorite character has the same knowledge as they do about the media when that might not be the case.
>>
>>6565108
That's pretty much the standard for anything, really. Someone who's a math genius would probably expect their colleague to have the same knowledge as them. People tend to get excited when someone shares an interest with them, and want that other person to know all the same things they do so they can talk about the thing on the same level.

We've completely derailed from my original statement. The point I was trying to make was that if you don't know anything about a medium but claim to love it, don't get mad when people who actually do know about it and love it call you out on being uneducated.
>>
>>6565037
Because you can play a lot of games and not have played every game? "I like videogames," is easier to say than, "Oh, I like Demon's Souls and Fallout and Mass Effect and Zelda and Faxanadu and Contra and Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 and SMT and Catherine and Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame and..."

"Have you played through FFVI?"

"Nope. And I don't care if you think it changed the face of videogames omg forever."
>>
>>6565124
and I will say I agree with your original point :)
>>
>>6565128
1.)Re-read the post and consider what "broad knowledge" might mean
2.)Stop being an idiot
3.)Have a nice day
>>
>>6565138
I know what "broad knowledge" means. My, poorly expressed, point was more that you can partake of a lot of a form of media, but not necessarily have interests that overlap with someone else who is also invested in that type of media. For example, the person in the hyperbolic example you were responding to probably knows that Megaman is a thing that exists, but wasn't into it.

There's such a problem of logic with the whole fake geek girl concept.

"I'm a vapid normalfag attention whore. But men don't pay enough attention to me! What can I do? Hmmm. I know! I'm going to pretend to like anime, video games and comics so that GEEKY GUYS will fawn all over me! Yay!"

Who the fuck would do this
Who would want to

Like if a small handful of these people exist, okay, but people are acting like ALL female geeks/cosplayers are doing this and it just does not make sense. If a girl just wants attention from guys, she doesn't want it from greasy, fat comic book geeks.
>>
>>6565188
of course they want attention from neckbeards. To normal guys she's just another chick, but to them it's OH MY FUCK IT'S A GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRL! worship.
>>
Okay if you're a guy and you attend conventions and you're all outraged at "fake geek girls" here is what you can do.

1. Talk to the girl FIRST before slapping on the label of fake geek girl.
2. Talk about what she's cosplaying/wearing.
3. If she has no idea what you're talking about, say "oh. okay." Walk away.
4. If she is a fan but is a newbie/uninformed fan, just be nice. It's not a crime to be new. You were once.
5. If she is a hardcore fan, hooray! You have found someone with whom you have a mutual interest to discuss.

And if you're all pissed off about girls who are "just desperate for male attention", here are more things you can do.

1. Pull your head out of your ass long enough to realize that not everything that everyone in the world does is about you and seeking your approval and attention and you can't read minds to decipher peoples' motivations.
2. Also realize that in most cases the girl is dressed as the character as they are portrayed in their media. Including the slutty outfit. Exactly as it was designed by the person who created it. Which you probably like because it's sexy.
3. If she is good looking, you now have some eye candy to look at. Hooray for you!
4. If you hate girls that use their bodies to get attention, DON'T GIVE HER THAT ATTENTION and just look away and walk away.

Not so hard.
>>
>>6565216
Why does that matter? Who wants to be worshiped by fat disgusting neckbeards?

no one, that's who.
>>
>>6565216
neckbeards have standards too. maybe more than regular guys. they obsessively pick apart womens' flaws and expect them to look as good as their 2D moe waifus.

>How do you feel when female cosplayers are considered to be "fakes", deemed they must know nothing about comics, and are simply "fake geek girls"?
If there's a reason for this label, then whatever. If a girl cosplays from a series she doesn't know about and is totally clueless when people try to talk to her about the series, I think it's fair if the other person is a little bothered.
>What do you think of girls who cosplay "slutty" characters without much (or any) interest in the actual series they're from?
I don't really care. Like I said, it is a bit disappointing if they don't know anything about the series, but ultimately it doesn't matter that much. Their choice, their money/time, their body. I've noticed a lot of girls bitching about this, but I feel like the girls who complain about it usually have some jealousy issues.
>How do you feel about female cosplayers who are subjected to a level of misogynistic outrage and harassment based on their outfit (whether they are actual fans of the character, or simply doing it for attention)?
I don't think it's really fair to get so worked up over a damn costume. I mean, if you're going to cosplay a character you don't know much about you should expect some disappointment and/or irritation from fans of the series, but to go onto a full on rage is really way too dramatic.
>>

>>
What I think is so weird about this issue is that it seems to exist mostly online, not in real life. I personally have never been accused of being fake or attention-seeking or anything. At least not directly to my face, or even behind my back, to my knowledge. And I've never met any of these attention-seeking fake geek girls, either. Not a single one. I think it's all kind of imagined and blown out of proportion. There might be a few posers out there and there might be a few genuine fans being accused of being posers, but I just don't see it happening anywhere but online.
>>
>How do you feel when female cosplayers are considered to be "fakes", deemed they must know nothing about comics, and are simply "fake geek girls"?
Don't judge people before you talk to them (or in the case of annoying fucks-hear them from the other end of con squeeling). That's all I can say.
>What do you think of girls who cosplay "slutty" characters without much (or any) interest in the actual series they're from?
I think the hang up there is that it makes a judgement on appearance saying that if the lady wants to cosplay slutty shit she's ONLY doing it for attention, not because she liked the character and that's simply how the character looked. Most cosplay ALL done for some kind of attention. If the girl is good looking, she's probably going to get looks. SURE. But does that automatically equal not knowing anything. No. I've rarely met people who didn't know ANYTHING about the thing they were cosplaying. If you have I'm sorry you had to deal with that, but it probably wasn't EVERY SINGLE GIRL YOU TALKED TO. And that still says nothing about the fact that some people like to cosplay because they like character designs. Slutty or not if she feels fine in the clothes then whatever.
>How do you feel about female cosplayers who are subjected to a level of misogynistic outrage and harassment based on their outfit (whether they are actual fans of the character, or simply doing it for attention)?
Again, what cosplay ISN'T for attention. If you're an observer and you want to make judgements on this person calling them a "fake geek girl" at least have more to back it up than "She's cosplaying a hot character and she's remotely good looking and I noticed so therefore she's just trying to get my attention." if you talk to her about the thing she's cosplaying and she ends up not knowing shit, just stop talking to her.
I've not seen much harassment with my own eyes but I know it happens. Not on a tumblrfeminist large scale, but it happnes. It's fucked up. Don't do it.
>>

here's the problem: Have you ever grown up and you see the more attractive people who act all buddy buddy with you and then just piss on your head behind your back? See here's the problem - real nerds don't identify themselves as nerds, unless under special circumstances (e.g. they were all bullied by the jocks in high school, so they had a secret "Nerd club" where they played chess and lamented the pain of having their underwear stretched on their head).

You rarely see males saying "tee hee, I'm such a nerd xD" and if they do that, they're also attention whores, since the only reason I can think off why they would do so is under the influence of shitty TV shows like Gang Bang Theory, which tries to imply that nerds are cool, and which is probably responsible for much of the fake 'nerdness' that's around here these days.

If you're offended that someone denies your 'nerd' status and claim that you're just as 'nerd' as them (because you say so), replace the word 'nerd' with 'whore'. Imagine that we live a few years in the future, where being a whore has become a positive thing thanks to libertard brainwashing. Let's say you're a woman and you slept with more than two dozen of guys already. That makes you a very respectable whore in this future society. But then you hear some fat creepy neckbeard, who will never have the capability to have sex, brag about being "omg xD such a whore" after he pays a prostitute to have sex with him.

Would you not be offended that this person claims to be as cool as you are (because 'whores' are cool in this scenario, remember)?

You have been whoring yourself out way before it was cool to do so, you had to deal with all the slut shaming and so on. You earned your whore status through blood and sweat. And now that fat piece of shit is saying he's as much of a whore as you do, just because he had sex with women he payed, and did so after it became cool and completely accepted by society.

>>
Part of the problem with /cgl/ and western cosplayers in general is that there's increasingly a reputation of actual, literal sluttyness (as in, sleeping around, cheating, being sex obsessed etc)

At some point the 'fetish community' decided that they wanted to be nerds and got involved. I can guarantee you a lot of these girls who today profess nerdyness were basically social butterflies who flitted between all the subcultures they could in their youth, look at how many fake nerd girls were raver chicks at one point.

Also, what's up with every cosplayer these days having a 'I was touched by daddy as a child' story? What attracts sexually broken people to cosplay?

Oh, and the girl in the OP's video is well known to be a huge whore. Like, a literal "has had sex with 50+ people" whore.

Ha, this guy is seriously deluding himself with that scenario. I have seen this shit happen, but on the rare occasions they usually just end up embarrassing themselves. I don't know anyone who doesn't play Skyrim, I wear glasses because I'm practically blind, and everything he listed is our pop culture now. I'm considered attractive, but I too have a social fear. However I don't go out of my way to call him fake, so I'd appreciate the same from him. He's not a nerd, he's just whining about himself and how lowly it is to be a 'real nerd'. The term 'nerd' in general doesn't mean shit anymore. Regardless of gender. Let me know when he actually lists off things that qualify him as a 'real nerd', because all I hear is bs. He's just unattractive and stupid, if a hot chick said the same stuff, she'd be called a lying whore.

If he was what he claims to be, he would have said he played Elders Scrolls before it became cool. Pathetic, and he calls himself a nerd.

I gogo, I have daddy issues. But I do not sleep with multiple men, I'm happily married. Labeling people based on biased opinions only causes trouble and drama. As mentioned above, being a 'nerd' isn't anything special, never thought it was, never claimed it was. It's just a lifestyle, but since I'm confident in my own skin somehow I'm labeled a raging slut in front of others who feel insecure with themselves. It's a bit unfair I think. I'm not a whore, I just cosplay one.

Oh for fuck sake. Why are cosplayers such sluts? Just take any cosplayer and you'll find that she either once prostituted herself, posted nudes on the internet, had sex with some stranger at a convention, was raped and didn't call the police, or worn a Yoko costume. It's not about you not being a 'prude' and being so progressive and liberal or whatever bullshit rationalization of your promiscuity. For some reason I think most of this comes from people of my generation and older. The almost 30's geeks and nerds that truly did grow up with almost no (attractive, don't get offended by that. Outcasts of either gender were normally labeled nerds/geeks just cause of glasses or they were ugly in my day) women into the "nerdy" stuff. Back in a time where gender roles were more enforced. Where an only female child probably would never see a comic unless someone in her family was into them. Nerd girls were those that had brothers or dads that got them into things that are "nerdy" and such.

Now we have a more liberal view of gender roles (no this isn't a political statement, just how things have changed), the family make-up is different (single dads raising daughters more often), and an incredible access to technology compared to the 80s-early 90s. So I can see how a lot of comic writers would find it hard to believe a woman cares about comics since when they were younger it was a rare thing.

This is getting WAAAY too long. I'll finish with saying this isn't the sole cause. It's also people that take things to be almost sacred that other people don't think are a big deal starting a fuss because a girl that would never look at them under normal circumstances suddenly shows up with a Star Wars t-shirt and can't name all the background characters in the original A New Hope. It somehow makes them feel better about themselves. A "that will show that hot girl that would never touch me that I'm better than her at something" when they should be thinking "hey an attractive woman that I might be able to have a conversation with about a passion we both share!"

Ok, sorry for that being so long. I like to dissect things like this for some reason.

My friend is a virgin, she's 23. She wants to lose her virginity after marriage. But she's also crazy, very religious, and has been sheltered by her parents so much that it's embarrassing. Problem with this topic, in my opinion is that some girls/women, actually lose a lot of their time fighting to be seen as equal "geeks" instead of enjoying the things that makes them "geeks". Because labels for some of them are so terribly important, and I don't understand why.
Sure some of them probably faced problems of harassment and such. I personally never had any problem of the sort, but I also don't tend to scream "GEEK" or "NERD" or "I LOVE SO MANY GEEK THINGS I'M SUCH A DORK" all the time. I don't need people to recognize me as such?
So far the only thing that ever happen to me was a guy who was playing AC3 at a store, and started questioning the fact that I actually played all the games. I left firstly because I wasn't there to be questioned and second because I don't need his permission for anything? I didn't even knew him.
And the more you girls give importance to this shit, the more you'll be fucking teased and the less people will beliebe you. That's just my two cents.

I did hear that in the usa, sometimes in gaming stores, girls are harassed? Leaving question here to check how real it is.

It's not being a slut if it's with a boyfriend.
>>
This just in, but 'fake nerd girls' do fucking exist. If you deny their existence, you're either one of them, or want to get inside one of them.

Why do they exist? Because calling yourself a 'nerd' is popular right now.

There's nothing more to it. The very point of labeling yourself as one is to get attention.

>'Baww, but what right do those neckbeard creeper losers have to be offended by it??'

Because being a liar or hypocrite and pretend you like something just so that other people like you has been shunned ab aeterno. It won't change now, just because you don't like it.

Right now it's about semantics. The term 'nerd' is still associated with someone who's into computers, comics, or similar stuff that used to be popular mostly with outcasts of society back in the day. It does not mean 'a person who wears glasses'. At least not yet.

So if you call yourself one, you're not only crying out for attention (due to labeling yourself as XYZ) but also associating yourself with the above mentioned attributes. If you're lacking them, then you're a fake.

When you're a fake, people get offended.

That's all there is to it. There's nothing special about the 'nerd' fad. There's no 'justice for the wronged' waiting outside there, for all the poor, poor 'nerd girls' out there. It's just the latest popular fad and nothing more. Society will inevitably move to another and with that all the 'nerd girls' will be gone and women can be judged by their true interests and not by the ones we pretend to have. Just like before some of them started labeling themselves for attention.

Happy end.

Only one time did I ever have a tiff with someone at my local Gamestop. Before I got a better PC, emulating games was hard as fuck so I went and bought some SMT games. Got into a little >opinions argument with the guy working there and I accidentally called him a normalfag. He started laughing maniacally. I didn't know what the fuck to do so I took my loot and left.

Never been bothered for being a girl though. I don't think anybody has around here. The midwest is the "Whatever" capital of the US.
>>
>>6565939
I've been called a fake nerd girl before. It's just annoying when the fat ass calling you it is less of a 'nerd' than even he claims to be. In general girls should stop calling themselves 'nerd gurrll' and just accept that everyone now a days likes the same nerd culture shit. Most that assume I'm not a 'nerd' are ugly ass men though, and they can be rude to the point that's it's completely un-called for and harassment. They don't care if you have been a gamer/anime/comic fan since middle school, you're still an attention whore for cosplaying wonder woman. The whole trend in general is ridiculous on both sides.

We were discussing this here too >>6562792 →

Women seem to think that skimpy versions of male characters are the only way to get across that they're being a woman on purpose and not just a bad crossplayer. And hey, if you just wanna be sexy go for it, but I dislike women thinking that skin is the ONLY thing that = femininity.

And ANY fan who isn't all that into a fandom needs to understand that when you can't keep up with the conversation at a meetup you're gonna get left out. If you show up to the Avengers meetup and I'm talking to someone about Hank Pym, and you don't even know who he is, I'm not gonna talk to you. I don't hate you, I don't even know you, but I'm not there to discuss one two-hour movie with you. You don't get to whine that I'm shunning you when you don't wanna talk about the same things as me.

The same is true for when people make a cosplay because they like the design and don't know anything about the character. Of course no one at the meetup is gonna wanna talk to you. WTF are they gonna talk to you about?
>>
I am not a "girl gamer" or a "nerd girl." I am a god damn gamer who happens to have a vagina. I'm sick of there being a difference between "gamer" and "girl gamer." If you perform the verb "to play a game" you are a "game er". End of fucking debate.

I don't identify myself as a "geek girl" or "gamer girl". I just happen to play vidja games and pc games. I happen to enjoy playing MtG and I regularly partake in DnD. I was just raised that way so I don't think of myself as such - other people label me as that and it's whatever. As for cosplay, I do it because I like it but that's not to say I don't like the attention too - It makes me proud of what I made when people notice me. If you're doing cosplay a part of you is basking in the attention you get so don't even bother denying it ladies.

In regards to cosplayers and the like it can be really iffy. Sure, there are girls out there who do play the series they're cosplaying from and have knowledge of it but there's also girls who do it because the outfits are "like so cute". So I don't really blame guys from going up to them and asking them about the series they're dressed up from. If anything, I'm more than happy to talk about it with someone who wants to discuss the plot or purpose of it.

When it comes to the more exposed costumes [Ivy from Soul Calibur, Felicia from Darkstalkers, Yoko from Gurren Lagann, etc. etc.] you're going to get slut-shamed regardless. You're a chick dressed up as a character that probably shows more skin then you're actually comfortable with [outside of a beach setting] so get used to it.

the sad thing is, now that it's hit this phase where it's hip to be a geek and such, the old values and the old ways will be lost to the ether and we'll be left with a generation of pretentious people who claim to be geeks, yet can turn around and piss on other people for it thanks to shows like Big Bang Theory.

It's the MGS 1 and 2 Gene and Meme ideals: We as humans should be free to pass down what we believe, not pass down what others thing we should be passing down (In this case, shows like Big Bang Theory passing down their supposed beliefs of how geeks are and people here on CGL who think they are just too cool for this shit and piss on everyone else for it) and soon enough if the ladder should be the one to survive, the old ways will be loss and it will just be some random fad that no one cares about at all and all because we where too petty and too self absorbed to realized whats going on.

This argument goes both ways: if those who enforce the old ways blindly, you will be the sole survivor, but there will be no one to pass the beliefs and your memories to. If you refuse to listen or obey, you will mutate the gene and will start a new kind of gene, a more terrifying and more toxic kind then the one already going around.

I'm conflicted.

While I agree that everyone's free to do whatever they want with their body, some people are seriously only doing it for the attention. And no, it's not just women. I've seen a few guys going as "the sunglasses guy" to show their pecs and fuck low esteem cosplayers.

I'm not sure about "fake geeks" either. I believe they come in 3 flavors:

> girls who have nerdy tastes but are new to the scene and are overeager to hang out with other nerds so they just look up everything online and pretend they know shit
> nerd's girlfriends tired of being left out
> tumblr "omg pikachu le reddit XD pastel goth the 90s triforce"

Only the third category I'd define "fake nerds"
Only the lasy category

>There is a trend that gets worse every year of people assuming that if they put an attractive female in a leather outfit into something, that "nerds" are so sexually deprived that they will not care if the plot of your movie is bad or the girl you hired to work at your video game booth knows nothing about the game.
See, the thing is that -this has been systemically proven to be true.- The so-called "vocal minority" is actually often the fandom majority. Guys want to see hot chicks in skimpy outfits. Why do you think they continue to design female characters the way they do? And fight so goddamn hard to preserve the status quo?
Herein lies the problem. Most guys don't want to acknowledge that there are girls who like nerd culture, both ugly and pretty (majority ugly, tbh, and I'm saying this as an ugly girl.) They -want- their boys' club, because it makes them feel like they are a part of something, and they feel threatened by "mainstream" people impinging on their little niche of life. That is truly all it is, an irrational fear of being upstaged (and ousted, idek???) by people who are "in the mainstream."

Wait, what? You contradicted yourself. What it seemed like you were trying to say was that you -do dislike- yourself enough to want to be your favorite fictional characters for a day, which would have made sense with your previous statement.
If that is what you meant, then I completely agree. I cosplay not to "attract desperate males" (but who the fuck is going to deny it feels good when someone, male or female, compliments your cosplay?) but to escape and be my fav character for a day.

I think instead of all this OMG HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ALL GEEK WOMEN ARE SLUTS AND FAKERS GAWD shit we should just say "Fuck I hate those girls who do it for attention and thus ruin our reputation". When you get all defensive you're giving out a signal that you're yourself guilty of being a poser GEEK GURRLLL TEEHEE who's in it for the attention.

I hate these "geek girls" (fuck I hate that word) because I've always been a huge nerd, like the one that got shunned and slapped and prank called and insulted for being socially awkward and liking dem chinese monga cartoons. I still hate being called a nerd because it's a slur, but that's what I was and will always be, but the nerd culture has always given me solace because it's probably the only subculture that cares more about your knowledge, skills, talent and personality than your looks. You don't have to follow the latest fashion or spend hours doing your hair and putting on makeup and walking in high heels. You won't get shunned for being ugly. And I want it to stay that way, I don't want to be compared to "geek girls" that are pretty and socially talented and know how to put on makeup.

I was given a lot of shit as a little girl for being a "geek" and i'm not taking any more shit from you just because I hit puberty and learned how to put on make-up and got pretty and socially talented, whilst still taking part in "nerd culture" just as much as before

that's what this is about
I don't like to refer to myself as a "nerd" or a "geek girl" but if anything this whole debacle means I can have "girly, social friends" who just laugh a bit and listen to me go on about this book or that game on occasion, and still be fun to go out with, and "nerdy, geek friends" who just laugh a bit and listen to me go on about this dress or those shoes on occasion, and still be fun to hang and play games with.

There's basically 2 types of nerds.

Type 1: male, very obsessed with their hobbies, shy or socially awkward, tries to be seem as "normal" as possible to strangers in order to avoid mockery, knows he's a nerd but doesn't want the world to know it.

Type 2: female, not as hardcore about their hobbies as type 1 and more socially gifted, more likely to have several friends and boyfriends, wants the world to know she's a nerd because it makes her unique or special.

I don't know any males why are intentionally exclusive with gaming, D&D groups, or any facet of "nerd culture". Sounds like you're just making shit up and enmitizing an entire group of people unfairly for the acts of a few. Females who aren't attention whoring and are genuinely into games, cosplay, etc, are welcomed and their gender doesn't come into play. You're the one that sounds like you're wearing the "I'm a girl, treat me special" badge.

If you're just practicing your hobby and not attention grabbing or flat out lying, people are not going to seek out out to harass you.

If you don't, then you're shallow.
>>
>ITT: people who feel the need to tell us about how your life is much better than these girls

Gosh, let people do what they want.

Every situation is different.

Some people like dressing up.

Blahblahblahentitlementblahblah

Just scoff if you want and move on yo.
>>
>>6578751
I'd rather stare for a good five minutes and then move on.

How does dying your hair make you more of a gamer? Your appearance/getting tattoos of trending games, or telling me you like games says nothing about you being a gamer. Hell you shouldn't even desire to want to be a gamer. You either play games or you don't. You don't have to prove anything to me. You can fuck a lot of guys, why does it matter what ugly fat 'neckbeards' have to say. By the way why is 'neckbeard' a negative insult again? Someone doesn't shave for a day and that is the worse trait a man can have?
>>
I think part of the reason women aren't really wanted in geeky circles is because men believe that the women in them will never really be able to understand, socially, what it was like for a lot of male nerds, the idea of being 'forever alone' (I hate the term) for example. Women have sort of co-opted these things and claim they're lonely because they're single for a month or two and so on, and it angers a lot of these guys, because there's this big gulf between men and women in nerdy circles, socially speaking I mean, and to truly understand someone, I think there needs to be some level of shared experience between them, and nerdy girls just don't have that.

If a nerdy girl feels lonely, she goes out and has con-sex for example, and she can usually get a pretty hot guy, or at least, hotter than she is (men are less discerning in this regard, and arguable less physically shallow). All of this totals up to make male geeks/nerds/whatever annoyed, because it seems like the lives female nerds lead are kind of easy.

I mean, take valentine's day, it's a running joke on /a/ that there are no women on 4chan during valentine's day because all the girls on here have boyfriends/fuckbuddies and that the concept of actually being virgins past a certain age just doesn't exist for women.

For my part, I think there's a lot of exagerration on both sides, but it doesn't help when /cgl/ is continially belittling and saying hurtful things to male nerds like calling them virgins (when let's face it, a lot of them are, even in their 20s).

I don't think you understand how deep it cuts to be called a virgin derisively by a girl.
>>
>>6578751
Cool, as long as you don't need to bitch about it
>>
>>6578765

This. It seems like women who have nerd hobbies lead very easy lives.

Also: It doesn't help that in communities like LoL, all the girls are attention whores and end up having sex with the pro players.

There is stuff in this world other than sex you know girls...
>>
>>6578765
This brings about other bullshit, like the fact that people can't understand the way something feels just because they're women and the assumption is that women are never lonely. It's just not fucking true. I know for a fact that there are several girls out there just like Tomoko, or even worse, who don't even have that one friend from middle school.
I'm not talking about people on 4chan either. The issue is not just people being unable to understand where the other side is coming from, but that each side assumes the worst (or best as it may be) of the other. It's not the fucking lonely olympics where everyone's wounds they cannot heal. You don't have to be a man to be lonely. You don't have to be a woman to have it easy.

All these generalizations are based on isolated personal experiences regurgitated in echo chambers where everyone asspats each other for being the better person. It's stupid shit. I know it's easy to say this group is always like this or that, and sometimes it's based on truth, but let's try to be rational individuals for a while and take things on a case-by-case basis instead.

Just because I choose to express my love of an anime/game/movie through spending hours and hundreds on crafting a costume instead of spending hours memorising everything about said media does not make my "efforts" any less legitimate.

Different people enjoy things different ways, is the comic collector superior to the figure collector? Are you a better person for liking the manga of the anime?

How about we just be thankful that so many people now share our interests and that as a result we have greater access to our comics/figures/costumes then ever before as a result.

Because you're 3D and that's gross.

Even though you share the same hobbies and she probably made a joke as anon that you laughed at, there's no way she'd touch you because of your 3-dimensional penis. You are a flawed human being and not a perfect existence, therefore you cannot be touched. Because all men are bitchy, only want money, are sex-obsessed, and are worthless beyond looking good.

I'm making myself sad so I hope you get the point already.

It wasn't my post, but nowhere in that post did she say she didn't know about it. She said she chose to show her love of it in a different way.

Just because you can't fucking name the number of cloned clouds/bushes in a Mario platformer doesn't mean you don't like the games.

You must be either a troll or a retard.

What makes you worthy of a dimension below the third one?

No, but the fact that you only played Level 1 Super Mario Bros 1 and then tell people how much you love the series does.

I know I am 3D.

I know I am unworthy.

I don't even like Mario it was an example

Can't win with you people. There are varying levels of liking things. Some people are more casual than others, doesn't mean they enjoy things less. Everything you like is not a secret club.
>>
>>6578842
Anon was using it as an example. Like, if you've only gotten a small taste of it, it doesn't validate the claim that you love the series,is what they probably meant.

Why should anyone have to validate that they like something? You can't just like it? What kind of Orwellian world do you people want to live in?

Should we start having 2 minutes of hate for people who are confirmed to like Donte?

According to cgl logic, if I ...taste a couple of cheeses, I can't say I like cheese unless I've tasted ALL the cheeses AND memorised the histories of them!

YOU DON'T REALLY LIKE CHEESE, YOU JUST SAY YOU DO TO FIT IN AT PARTIES, FUKIN POSER

Yes. Though that's probably a bad example.

Cheese

No, not only men are lonely. I never said that.

I'm just explaining that girls and guys have very different ideas for what constitutes loneliness, and men sometimes have to deal with actually being on their own for, well, ever...Women don't. They can have sex tonight of they want.
>>
>>6578867
Someone may or may not have tasted a single type of cheese or a fuckton of different types, but when they go to the party everybody assumes they only tried shitty american cheese on a sandwich because they lack a penis. Then everyone at the party starts ridiculing them despite not knowing whether or not they actually have a taste for cheese, because fuck giving people the benefit of the doubt, fuck letting people new to cheese get a chance to get some cheese mileage, and, really, fuck cheese. Cheese ruined my life, it'll probably ruin yours. Stay away from cheese.
>>
>>6578872
can't we just compromise? Most girls would kick my ass at games. But i'm just not going to allow you to be a poser just because you tried mario kart once with your brothers. But later on when you're hanging with the jocks you're talking about how 'gay' video games are.
>>
>>6578867
"How do you like your sandwich?"

"WELL, as this is my first attempt at this cheese thing, I'd say I liked it BUT i know you wont believe me until i've had like 100 sandwiches, honestly i'm now a little afraid of asking to try a different cheese because people are really angry I've only had this one sandwich"

I remember the day I first had cheese ;o;

I only had a few bites but then someone got mad and said i wasn't eating it right.

It made me sad.

I just recall going to art school. Some girl had triforce tattoo on her wrist and the ring tone. She didn't bother me at all. But it fits the trait of the attention whore. Same thing if a guy did it. /r/gaming has guy posting trending 8-bit zelda and mario tattoos and artcrafts all the time.

I guess it somewhat annoys me, and i don't even care about games that much.

Surely there is an example for the cosplay world?
>>
>>6578893
To add to that, why do people assume the ability to have sex prevents one from being lonely?

I couldn't care less about sex. How about some motherfucking friends? Nobody ever talks about picking those up on a street corner at midnight. FUCK
>>

If it would genuinely make you legiitmately happier as a person, and somehow make your life more fulfilling, and you would be my pal afterward and tell me I'm cool and that I have great taste in gay cartoon porn, then yes. I would give you the peggings.
>>
>>6578893
I have plenty of women friends anon. I'd like to play the game. But all of my guy friends have been layed at a young age, for free. It's too late for me now. I might as well buy a hooker.
>>
>>6578948
yes it would make me happier, because im so close to just getting a guy to fuck me instead.... and my porn folder is 99% women... maybe 1 or 2 cocks...
>>
>>6578959
Why do you need sex, though? Don't turbo nerds pride themselves on not caring what society deems "normal"? Are they lying to me, and in actuality they are dying on the inside from not being normal enough?

>>6578950
Don't buy a hooker unless you make him/her do something really outrageous and take pictures.

Well honestly. I don't need it, I've been fine without it, but society believes I do and there are some who wouldn't trust me because I've never had sex. I guess there's some kind of 'tell' someone who is wound too tight, clearly a virgin or gay to many folks. And I guess it's a rite of passage.

I would die happily even if I could do it just once for free.
