Honestly, WMM isn't that bad of an editing program. It's prone to crashing for no reason, but that aside, yeah you can absolutely make something like the OP if you know how to use it. Thing is, the program's so widely accessible being free and already installed on most people's computers, you see a lot of shit come out of it by people who have no concept of what it means to sync.

That it's prone to crashing and doesn't like to save complicated movies (anything with many clips a second) is shitty, but as far as the editing itself you can do with it, it isn't bad for being free.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this? I ran into this problem once when working on a class project, and the only way I could figure out how to work around it is to break up the movie into segments... save the segments, import the segments into the program, and save it again. But what with twice the necessary compression, that was a last resort.

Probably the easiest way is to simply not use WMM. Though some people prefer the way it lets you organize collections of clips and trim them outside of the project itself, but all in the same program, so if that applies to you, what you could do is find one of those free programs that lets you merge wmvs (of the same bitrate, resolution, etc) without recompressing the video. If your video has audio, save the audio in a separate wmv.

Then use Windows Media Stream Editor (should be able to download this straight from Microsoft if you don't already have it) to combine the video of the merged wmv with the audio of the separate wmv into a new (but without the need for recompression) wmv.
