To be fair, some of Rumminov's designs are practically impossible (speaking as a cosplayer who is trying to make one of them...) but at least they are logical enough that adding a couple buttons or a zipper can fix that problem. Mookie's designs are just kinda crazy.

Seconding all of these--I dunno burrenbari at all, but she's a really good Kanaya, and good with makeup (beyond Ben Nye) that is RARE in HS fandom. Adebimpe is also really great (I LOVE her Kyoko, holy shit) and knowledgeable, she had a great post recently about knowing how to work with your body shape. Ornerymint was really nice at Katsu, and really is a great Handmaid. Plus her cocktails are great. Dunno about derpderpmotherfuckers, though. But I'm glad there are some good eggs in HS fandom.

I've met some cool people, I enjoy the source material in general, and it's kind of fun to look compleeeeetely different for a little while. Hell, it's been fantastic for learning a bunch of odd skills- contouring while grey, tooth wax, PAX, checking your lace-front to make sure it hasn't receded all the way up your huge forehead... Irk.

I remember the first and only time I wore Eridan (AB11? I was the one with the eighthead) I kept getting stopped by old ladies for pictures. Not sure what to make of it but it was fun! I met several cool people and we literally just chilled the entire con.
Then at the most recent Katsu, I threw together a not-so-great Calmasis, but I hung out with Hanyaan for a bit and we ended up talking about BPAL perfume and Good Omens. It was fun!

I've met plenty of down to earth fans... Maybe not the majority, but there are some super cool people.

Also, as a note on this entire Alyssa thing, I'll go ahead and say that she's a sweet girl but she really doesn't speak her mind openly. This can come off as kind of cold, but she's just not all that extroverted. Take that as you will. I've known her for several years and she's been a great casual friend (and I'm in no way a great cosplayer so...)

I know to a lot of people it's not an excuse, but Rel didn't have a lot of time to mess with her makeup at Katsu, she just barely finished Sailorstuck in time because she was finishing commissions for other people first, and she was working in the artist's alley all day. Personally, I think non-canon designs should really go die in a fire.

The fancy dreamers are just an excuse for people to throw extra frills and beads on a costume that doesn't need it in order to stand out and be hailed, when really the costume should be PAJAMAS. If anyone went by canon most Homestuck costumes should be made out of fleece or flannel or some shit, but people make them satin and add sparkly bias tape and shit to them in order to whore more attention.

Same goes for really any 'AU' cosplay. If these people really had any drive to stand out, they'd do something impressive that's actually canon, like, I don't know, cosplaying one of the prototypes Queens or making a mascot suit of a lusus, SOMETHING.

Non-canon designs just really rustle my jimmies.

I'm not really into Homestuck but the Sailorstuck thing really annoys me. Especially the second link. Those colours don't match at all. If you're going to play a senshi, at least match the colours if you're going with their zodiac sign or whatever they're doing.

But my point is that there are detailed cosplays to be found if you look for them. I would say between all the ancestors, the more detailed carapacians (like the royalty), the lusii, and even some of the sprites, there's plenty of 'challenging' costumes. But instead of doing these, people just add lace and bows to the simplistic costumes of the more popular characters. I find it terribly shallow and annoying.

Surely people who want a 'challenge' have other fandoms that they like with more complex costumes? Save your Homestuck cosplays for Sunday or some shit. Or just stop cosplaying Homestuck if it pains you so badly to be seen in something simple.

Yeah, it was adhered to my skin with Pros-Aide adhesive but the wig was too small to begin with so inevitably it would rip backwards. That's one of the many reasons I abandoned that costume (though it was fun while it lasted!)

As for Calmasis, YES. Wrong wig was entirely wrong. I made the entire thing in the two days before the con with material I had on hand. The cosplay wasn't worth cutting up the wig that I had and I didn't want to risk borrowing a friend's wig and getting grey paint on it so I'll just have to stew in my inaccuracy. Oh dear, I've become part of the problem, haven't I?

not really anything super exciting no, I was just kind of appalled. a good 95% of them were like 14 or 15 or 16 and just raving yaoi fangirls like basically every dave and karkat and gamzee there, but even the 'older people' were fucking aspies.

basically I dont want to listen to a pile of underaged brats in shitty alpha dave cosplays bucketing it up all day. the panels being poorly handled and the photoshoot being run by some baboons didnt help

Okay here we go, I've basically stood by while you bash this con. As well as a ton of people I know. You need to get off your high horse.
First of all regarding panels. Lets get this straight, you clearly were not at both panels? Also the panels at this con in general were badly planned out and badly orginized to begin with. It's a con with a cap of 2500 what the hell are you expecting? And the panel you did go to wasn't an in character panel, it just turned into one. It was for fun get over it.
And regarding this con and it's cosplayers, the homestuck's were SO much better than the hetalia cosplayers thank you. We never had a problem with any of them, ever. I think one person brought a bucket, that's to be expected though. Besides that I don't think anybody was extremely loud or destructive.
And from the sound of it I don't believe you even talked to the vriska. You know what I doubt you talked to any of the other homestucks there to be completey honest. I dont know why you went to any of the photoshoots with your shitty pictures if you didn't enjoy it. Also it was a gamzee and a John who ran the photoshoot, and considering the lack of experience on one side of it they did a pretty good job and fit the entire photoshoot in an hour and had everyone lined up quickly with a little amount of problems. If you didn't like the way it was run then you can run it yourself next time how about that?
Also regarding the fancy teir group, they were all extremely nice and well presented. They did it for fun and none of them cosplay religiously so I don't think it's fair saying that oh no the john put lace on their shirt that's so gay. Honestly who cares? If you actally talked to them you wouldn't have a problem with them I can guaruntee you that. Same with the rest of the group.

Now I have a question - what is your opinion on people who cosplay the kids with non-black/white hair colours?
Obviously, blonde and even dark blonde instead of white is generally accepted for the Lalonde-Striders - what is your opinion on, for example, dark brown hair for Jade/John/Jake/Jane?

I think it's kinda pointless. Dave/Rose was always up for debate because no one knew of the white hair was meant to translate to white, or 'blank', like their skin.

But the black hair is pretty obviously black.

I think it's fine personally, it's not like Hussie has ever given anyone a hair color that wasn't black or white, so you can interpret that however you like, in my opinion. People might crit you for it, but honestly 90% of each character's physical attributes are open to interpretation, Hussie even said so himself.

i kind of just... have some questions.

chubby fef is a headcanon for a lot of people, and i'm planning on cosplaying her for otakon this year, and so far i've gotten my horns done, working on the jewelry, and i'm planning to pick up a bathing suit (one like you would use for a swim team?) in black and iron on the decal, and making her skirt, getting paint and everything. this is my first "serious" cosplay and i want to do it correctly. if there are any other tips you could lend me, like, what not to do, i'd be grateful because uh, i dont think i'm one of >those< fans but you never know. my best friend is gonna cosplay sollux with me and i'm helping him with it so he won't default to a closet cosplay like he was originally going to.
