Are you blind OP? There's a lot of above average male cosplayers who get into cosplay to get laid and get attention.

We've got quite a lot of them on /cgl/ too (like, pretty much every male except WesternFella).

I see just as many male cosplayers as female ones at cons. Pretty sure most of them are straight, and absolutely sure that most of them are not transgender. You just don't see them posted online as often as the girls.

I'm straight and not FTM, but I buy all my costumes or get it commissioned because I can't do creative things for shit unless it's on a $2,000 piece of AutoDesk software for drafting.

I've only made one costume for a games expo and I'm in the process of making another costume for the same expo this year.

I actually enjoyed thinking up ideas for the costume and making it. Mainly thought of doing it for some attention I guess and I liked the idea of dressing up as character from one of my favourite games.
Also I really enjoyed the expo, playing some demo's for up coming games and checking out all the people there, other people in cosplay and stuff was cool.

And, no, I wasn't and am not interested in hooking up or getting laid at an expo.

Might have more to do with me only being more interested in games compared to anime and any anime cons.

I can't really speak though, mainly because of what I said at the start, just thought I'd give you my side of it.

I'm straight, male, married and cosplay for fun. I can't sew, but my wife can. So I make what I can, props and accessories usually, and she helps me with the clothing parts. I can't say I'm renowned or anything like that, but I love cosplay and do it for the passion... I don't need cosplay to get nookie. Being married covers that pretty nicely.

There are plenty of straight male cosplayers out there. They just don't show themselves in public. You don't see much pictures of male cosplayers on the internet than females unless it's a cute kid.

Interestingly half of the photos I've taken of cosplayers in the conventions I go to are females. But there is one other interesting theory I have about why you don't see male cosplayers much: They're possibly enjoying the convention activities itself: Such as video games, anime showings, friend meetups,cosplay photography ,the like.

Maybe you're just not looking in the right places? I dunno, maybe it's because I'm a lesbian or something but I see tons of male cosplayers around here on the East Coast. Everything from Kuroshitsuji and Avatar to Marvel and television shows. Hell, last year I met a male Dr.Who cosplayer that was actually from England. Had quite the pleasing accent.

I've cosplayed in the past just for fun, but I recently found out my gym bro used to go to cons before we both started gettin all muscly. This next time around, we are gonna do a group costume (Goten/Trunks?) and it's going to be a combination of both for fun and for nerdy girls. Side note, if anybody has any good 2 guy group costumes suggestions that would be cool. We are both 6'0"ish and muscular.

When I did conventions I noticed girls dressing up as male characters far more than girls. They said they respected those characters more.

I'm extant, secure in my gender, and straight, but I mostly do crossplay since I don't have a very manly body type (and also because Touhou is awesome.)

There are male cosplayers but I've seen them mostly do "cool" cosplay that have a lot of armor or neat designs. I've seen a lot for video games and alpha characters.

A lot of male cosplayers don't put much effort into their outfits.
I'm not saying all are bad, no.
But there's far-more females doing good cosplay than males.

Plus a lot of guys who go to cons don't even bother cosplaying.

Most of my male friends are either too self conscious,too busy to prepare a costume, or just wish to enjoy the con without being in a costume,
I posses a more rugged look and so isn't as well suited for more bishie characters, crossplayers more suited for that so they get more attention
I'm fair at sewing, but armor pieces and weapons are more concentrated on.
Personally I'm not out to bang some random nerd chick,
I'm at cons to get my pics taken, talk to random people, generally enjoying the con

I think a lot of casual guys either don't see the reason to cosplay, don't have the means (money or knowledge), or don't want to "damage" their image as a manly-man by wearing a costume, wig and possibly makeup.

I'm torn over whether or not I even want to do this any more, I love dressing up and portraying a character I love, but the level of drama and the poor motivations (people doing it for attention) I see is disgusting and quite frankly embarrassing.
