I can't imagine why though. I guess people just found the trolls really interesting. That's when cons started to be flooded with them.
I remember at AnimeNEXT 2011 there wasn't many troll cosplays.
Then again, I wasn't really paying attention.

Far too low quality, with most costumes being little more than a shirt, some foam horns and some badly done body paint.
Which is a shame, because I'd like to see some good cosplay of the kids, since they have had a good variety of costumes over the comic's run.

Doesn't help that the fandom is terrible and the webcomic itself went deep south after the troll arc.

Not going to go as far to say that it's all terrible and should be banned from anime cons, but I wish there was better work. They've quickly become the Akatsuki of this era. Everywhere, not interesting, just noise.

I don't mind Homestuck cosplayers as long as they don't crowd up the place
and if they are taking up a lot of room, they should at least try to move out of the way

I remember at NY Comic Con there was a Tavros in a maid dress. That's the only problem I have when people who do shit like that. I can get cosplaying fanart if it's worth while, but putting a troll in a maid dress is just fucking stupid.

Homestuck is a mixed bag of cosplay. There are some really elaborate costumes in the comic, but most people go for the casual t-shirt cosplays. It's kind of like back when Deathnote was in style, it was easy to do, therefore anyone who wanted to cosplay without much effort would do it. The rare occasions you see the shinigami cosplays, they were usually pretty good though. That aside, I hate the stupid dog collar yaoi shit, but thats not limited to homestuck

Homestuck is pretty easy to cosplay, but I wish it wasn't glorified as much.

Its funny, I started reading Homestuck out of sheer curiosity because of all the cosplay and HSGs on /co/.
I read from the beginning nearly non-stop until the end of act 4. I'm feeling like I've missed something in the intermission by not reading Problem Sleuth first, so I'm going back to read it, because I can NOT get myself to read any more of act 5.
I'm not sure if I just don't like any of the trolls, but the FUCKING TYPING gets way too annoying in the pesterlogs for one thing, and I just don't know.

The great majority of homestuck cosplayers are terrible and annoying, and most of the "good" ones are just feeding their egos with the mass amounts of attention they get from managing to look decent in easy costumes. I still enjoy cosplaying it though. The characters are fun and there's still a lot of great people in the fandom. It just takes some searching. I find it irritating that people complain about homestuck cosplayers at conventions, and then when we have our own events (promstuck, etc) people are still bothered. I do agree though that we're in serious need of better crowd control. Most of the problems in that area arise from stupid people trying to grab for popularity by appointing authority to themselves.

The fanbase at cons is in general so fucking annoying that I can't even make myself read the comic anymore. My friend who's in a local Homestuck comm told me about a meetup they had at the mall where people showed up in cosplay and they were changing the homepage on all the computers in the Apple store to MSPA. Apparently there were a lot of 12-year-olds who were squealing and one of them brought a horn which they were honking inside of stores. She said most of the older teens/adults were pretty chill, though. I kind of want to go just to witness the autism first-hand.

At one point it was Narutards, FF/Kingdom Hearts, Deathnote and Bleach clogging conventions. While each of these aren't outright awful franchises, they attracted awful fans. Eventually when people stop jumping of the Homestuck bandwagon it'll turn out that the fans left aren't that bad. (Hetalia also had this phase).
In terms of cosplay, Homestuck has simple designs, but if you take shortcuts it will easily fall to shit.

What in the fuck is Homestuck and why do you fatties hate is so much?

Homestuck for me is a mixed thing. Several of my friends are into it so after some nudging I started reading it. Really couldn't get into it so I quit and then ended up reading it again and sort of liking it but the time changes were really hard to follow. I think I'm like.. the ironic twist as compared to everyone else because I hear about how people skipped straight to Act 5 and started there while I got to Act 5 and then quit. I don't like the trolls and I think the cosplay scene sort of helped with my dislike of them... which was sort of a good thing since I ended up pissing off a lot of Deviantart people with my OTP FOREVER DESU artwork of Karkat and Fluttershy. Good times!

I'm a big 4Chords fan just because it's the only form of the trolls I'll actually tolerate and the art is really nice. I wouldn't say I'm a Homestuck fan but I do like looking at some of the nicer art and I reblog it sometimes. I have thought about cosplaying Homestuck but I'm happy to wait until the craze dies down first.

As for my feelings on Homestuck cosplayers, I think it's just the big fad in the scene right now so it's no different than the Hetalia, Death Note, or Naruto fandoms. You've got your really good cosplayers and then you've got the bulk that are crazies and scene-jumpers that just pull on a shirt and grab some paint. The hype will die down before the year is over and they'll have moved to something new.

As a dedicated Homestuck fan, let me tell you about the Homestuck fandom.

Yes, we are a (very) large fandom. Most members of our fandom are actually very fun and kind people. The other part is usually rabid, annoying, bucket-spitting weeaboos (stuckaboos, if you will). Being quite experienced with fandoms, you eventually learn to avoid and ignore the weeaboos.

On the topic of cosplay, the majority of Homestuck is based off headcanons. Andrew Hussie, the creator of MSPA, has even told the fandom himself that he doesn't mind whatever headcanons we have. The Homestuck sprites are very blank and changeable, so people usually make up headcanons for what the kids and trolls look like. For example, their skin color; some people think Roxy is african american or Jade is asian. Therefore, cosplays are usually varied depending on what headcanons people have.

Homestuck also has simple designs, and as said before, if you try to take any shortcuts it could fuck up the entire cosplay. Some common mistakes are making Sollux have thick-rimmed glasses or having Dave's hair parted the wrong way.

Body paint is also a big deal. There are a literal fuckton of paint options and tutorials for troll (and even carapace!) cosplays. Cosplayers often make it shoddy or don't seal it correctly, so I understand other cosplayers not wanting to be hugged or touched by people wearing the body paint.

Homestuck is a very talented, yet finicky fandom. Don't judge them based on a few people.

Homestuck cosplayers may be obnoxious and slathered in paint but they're far from being the most obnoxious cosplayers around or causing the most property damage.

I've met a lot of cool people through Homestuck but at the same time encountered some really awkward individuals.

As for cosplay, it is VERY basic but it's a good gateway cosplay IMO. Honestly, if I didn't do an Equius cosplay then I would have never gained an interest in cosplay.

I personally stopped reading when the Alpha kids were introduced and have no interest in finishing it but I still interact with the fandom.

I do a lot of business with some of the fans. I've had both good and bad experiences but that comes from all fandoms sometimes. Sadly Homestuck is just so huge that there are more than some average fandoms BECAUSE of their sheer numbers.

While I enjoy talking to the pleasant people, I do admit after the 2395084 bucket joke I do get a little annoyed but I still try to be professional.

I am thankful I haven't had to deal with many of the really bad fans and only once did I have to deal with a Homestuck hater on dA but that's it.

I first started going to cons in 2006. At my first con, I was surrounded by people in Akatsuki cloaks with no wigs, no real definition of a character - just a random Akatsuki member.
At my next con in 2008, there were still some of the Akatsuki cloaks floating about but they were mostly replaced by a mix of two groups - the first group was generic Organisation XIII member and the next were white jumper/jeans. 300 people at a convention and at least 50-60 of them were badly done L's or Org XIII.
2010, was the year of Hatsune Miku, of more appropriately for the con I was at, Fatsune Miku. Seriously, the con attendance had increased to 500 and still 20% of the attendees were Fatsune or some other Vocaloid variant, sometimes without even a wig or JUST the wig.

You may not like the fandom but it is highly irrational to ban a group of people from a convention. I read Homestuck but don't cosplay from it (for the pure reason that I prefer to look at costumes than be in them). Are they annoying? Yes. But at least most of them a children who can spend most of their time in the corridor/outside and not disrupting panels.
Unlike the neckbeards and "elitists" who sit behind me every year muttering and talking all through panels about how they already knew everything, everything is wrong, making bad jokes and scoffing at people who maybe get a question wrong.

I'm a big fan of the comic. I will admit there are a LOT of obnoxious people and terrible cosplayers in the fandom, though. On the other side, I've met some truly amazing people because of Homestuck. I don't mind Homestuck cosplay at anime conventions as long as the people cosplaying are respectful that it is in fact an anime convention and doesn't really belong to them.
