How do you feel about cosplay in public? Public as in, not at a con or event.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/12(Sat)14:16 No.5801836
cosplaying in public = trying to whore for attention to people that don't give a shit.
    >> Denmark !Z0k5e0SqSI 05/05/12(Sat)14:18 No.5801847
So long as the cosplay is something that ~people in the real world~ would wear. (Including the hair-color.)

I spent a summer in a theme park where A LOT of Kingdom Hearts and Code Geass cosplayers visited.
    So much secondhand embarrassment.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/12(Sat)14:18 No.5801848
It's reasonable if it's some random thing and they haven't had a chance to change out of their cosplays from an event or whatever

Really depends on the character. Some, like my picture are subtle enough that you wouldn't stand out at all.
On the other hand, the other 90% of costumes out there that DO stand out?
I'd hope they don't cosplay in public unless it's for an event, gathering or photo shoot.

Kind of like the Hetalia cosplayers going to a Holocaust museum. Bad. Idea.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/12(Sat)14:19 No.5801852
Ok for photoshooting or when you have to eat outside a con. Dubiously ok when you have to stop on the way to/from a shoot. Never ok when just fucking around. However, the more "normal" the clothes, the more ok it is. Shizuo and Izaya are more fine in public than Roy Mustang.

I saw a bunch of cosplayers out walking around in Dundee towards the end of September last year.

I don't want to be cruel... but it was one of the most bizarre things I'd ever seen in my life. I mean, I'm a weeaboo, but the crowd of people I saw were like, the PROPER weeaboo's you read about in all those horror stories.

It's generally not something you expect to see in Scotland, and they were so stereotypical as well.
There were 2 boys is terrible Naruto cosplay, one with sprayed on green hair, another guy in what I assume was supposed to be a Vash cosplay as he was wearing his red coat, 1 overweight girl in a cheap silk kimono with floral decals stuck all over it and her hair in pigtails and a final other morbidly obese, greasy looking girl wearing white/black stripey socks, a lace-monster lolita-styled black skirt and a cheap imitation corset with plastic boning that gave her a very odd shape as the plastic boning clearly wasn't made with a rotund form in mind.
They were all screeching and running around, and hanging off lamposts and I heard the kimono girl screeching "KAWAIIIIIIII!".

I guess I can't fault them for having a little fun, but it was like they were DELIBERATELY trying to get everybody in high streets attention, my boyfriend and I just stood in there in horror at what might of been us.

I don't think I even knew how to properly react the first time, I just stood their gawping.

This photo is two years old, from Anime Boston 2010, it's not as if this is an everyday occurrence in fandom.
This was definitely a very regrettable instance but let's be real, there's only be two documented cases of Hetalia cosplayers unintentionally/intentionally using Nazism as part of their photos, out of many. It's not out of malice here but out of ignorance so yeah they're fucking idiots but pretty much everyone who was involved learnt their lesson.

    I... ignored them really.

First time was a little weird, you know, holy crap, furries really exist, and really prance about town, just like my stories on the internet.

Another time i was at pizza hut with some people and a large group (20 or so) crowded in, most of them were wearing tails and eats n' paraphernalia, no full fursuits. But we knew what they were, and generally kept making eyes. They were sat pretty near, so we didn't exactly say anything until we got out.

Unless there's a reason beyond an event or con (Private Photoshoot, etc.) I think it's not the most appropriate. Can't stop a person from wearing what they want, but there are degrees to what looks acceptable and what doesn't. Cosplay is more on the end of what isn't.

To get further into it, I never have issues with small bits and pieces of cosplays if they can be worn casually. Like in OP's pic, I could see someone wearing the Ouran blazer about for the sake of it. I occasionally wear my Ace shorts because, they're shorts! there's a pouch pocket that's functional, and I have a belt for it.

It's acceptable if you're at a con, on your way to and from the con, and happen to wander into a store or other public place because why change out of your costume just to go run and buy some batteries? But it really, really helps to have friends with you also in costume; no one wants to be that one lone weirdo.

I once went to a grocery store with my friends while we were all in cosplay; I asked them to make sure they don't take off and leave me somewhere because it was super busy/crowded and I was rally self-conscious about how out of place I looked. And what did they do? Of course manage to wander off without me, and then stop answering their phones so I couldn't find them. Fun.

But I'm guessing you mean people who cosplay when they're not even going to a con. Like, to go to the mall or whatever.

...I did this as a teenager. I wasn't all decked out and outlandish, but I couldn't really pass for normal either. It CAN be kinda fun if you're not overdoing it. Even though I've outgrown my weeabooishness, I have to admit, it can be pretty fun to see the looks on normalfags' faces. If you're conducting yourselves like mature, sane people, I don't see the harm.

I have to say I'd really like to go with a bunch of friends to go bowling in cosplay one of these days.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/12(Sat)20:34 No.5803160
I like to do private photoshoots in local areas, because the crowd annoys me when I'm doing a legit photoshoot, and half the time I can find a prettier and more accurate location for the shoot. And sometimes, if I cosplay with a group, we don't always have time for a photoshoot at the con and promise to take pictures later on! So for stuff like that, yeah, I think it's fine. But just cosplaying when you're out and about for no reason other than "I'M SO EXTREME LULZ" can be a little.. obnoxious? It also depends on behavior, I don't mind too much if I see some well-behaved cosplayers roaming around a mall. But a bunch of annoying weebs, blegh.

So in conclusion: it depends on if they're doing a cosplay event (i.e. photoshoot or whatever) and if you're acting like an obnoxious weeb.

Wait, What's the difference between wearing lolita out in public and wearing a cosplay out in public?
As long as you're not being an ass or getting in the way of others, why does it matter if you're in a costume?
To people who aren't lolita and don't know what it is, it looks like a fetish costume, so why is lolita in public okay, but cosplay isn't?

Sometimes if I am in lolita going to the park or somewhere else I won't change to go to the grocery store. Also, when I'm at a con and me and my friends stop at the store, if I'm in cosplay I might not change if it's gonna be a quick run, but come on.

I think it's fine if you're at a con and you go to a store in cosplay because chances are, the people around there have seen more than just you all weekend and if not, you have a valid reason to be a grown adult in a costume if you get asked, not "Oh, just because, baka!"

I did this, but mainly for the lulz way back in my early cosplaying days when I was a huge weeb (2003-2004). But it's not something I do anymore. Hell, I usually even change out of my costume most times when going out to eat at a convention when the restaurant isn't attached to the convention area. But sometimes I'll leave a wig on (especially if I didn't have time to wipe my makeup and I changed my eyebrows to match my wig, or I have bad wig hair).

I would feel really embarassed even doing this for a photoshoot now. I sure as hell wouldn't run around in Walmart wearing cosplay anymore.

You beat me to the question, anon. But yes, I was wondering this as well. I know that the more outlandish forms of lolita are generally frowned upon when in public, but even classic looks incredibly strange compared to an average crowd of people. Yet, it's still seen as more acceptable than public cosplay in most cases.

I'm just curious about the mindset of this more than anything.

If I didn't have work I would have hunted her down and told her to at least get a petticoat for her lace monster of a dress.

It's actually the first time I've seen lolita in public in my area. I live in a very rural town 6 hours away from any city (and culture) so I was surprised as fuck to see it.
