  • Attention 4chan extension/user script/archive developers: Some time in the next few days, we'll be rolling out a complete HTML rewrite of the imageboards.
The design will remain the same, but the underlying HTML/CSS is completely new, and validates HTML5/CSS3 (with some tweaks to account for cross-browser compatibility).

Please visit this thread to read more about the changes, and here to preview the code.

As a regular user, these changes should not affect you. You will need to update your 4chan browser extensions/user scripts when their maintainer updates them to be compatible with the changes.
The official 4chan Chrome extension will be ready to go when the updates happen, and 4chan X should be ready soon. We'll post more details on the day of the migration!

Since we had a thread about family throwing out stuff like costumes/lolita outfits, thought we'd have another story thread.

    >family responses to you first coming out as a cosplay/lolita

    or

    >stories about your family regarding your hobbies

The first time I ever bought a seifuku, I had to grab the package and run upstairs with it before my mother asked what it was.
I found out later that she saw it and didn't say anything because she presumed it was sex fetish between me and my boyfriend, that I would put it on and pretend to be a Japanese schoolgirl :l

I don't think she approves of my weeaboo hobbies and kind of thinks it's a waste of money, but I've found that a good way to get around this is by including my sisters in the hobbies so now she's like, "It's so nice to see you guys spending time together for once".

I invited my sister to come to Manchester with me for Manchester comic con and now she's offering to pay for our train fare hurgh hurgh

My parents didn't really care too much but my mother (who worked at a bank) would have me come in to get money from her before I left and try to get me to bring my friends inside so her coworkers could see our costumes. She'd also make me give her copies of my convention photos to show them.

My grandmother on the other hand was heavily religious and when Harry Potter came out she (a librarian) made me promise that I didn't believe in magic, witchcraft, wizards, or any of that before she would let me check the book out to read. So when I told her about cosplay and Japanese cartoons, she took it upon herself to check it out online... I ended up having her go out to lunch with me and seemed very concerned, saying what she had seen was absolutely terrible and how could I be into that and I freaked and had to explain to her that there were different kinds of anime and I didn't watch any of the 'adult' kind, just the kids stuff. To this day I still wonder what the hell she found but I'm guessing it was one of those XXX Hot Anime Girl Pron!!! websites.

    >that feel when trying to describe cosplay to all your friends who haven't even heard of anime let alone cosplay
    >"so it's like playing dress up?"
    >"....yeah"

Worst I get nowadays is my dad will sometimes shake his head when he sees me doing a bit of sewing, but apart from that they seem cool with me dressing up as anime characters. Took them a while to understand what it was, but that's it really.

My mother loves the fact that I asked her to teach me how to use the sewing machine, but now hates it whenever she sees me on my bedroom floor surrounded by dozens of cut up bits of fabric and foam, because the foam has a tendency to leak to other parts of the house.

My family hates my hobbies, but I live on the other side of the country from them so idgaf. My mother will still sometimes berate me when she hears I'm spending money on such things, but she can't do anything about it. Being an adult is kinda cool sometimes.

That being said, my fiance hates lolita and won't be seen in public with me if I'm wearing it. I don't really mind, since it's not practical at all for me to wear in my daily life, so it's pretty much something I save for conventions or photoshoots (inb4 NOT A REAL LOLITA!!!!!!11). He doesn't mind me making or selling the clothes, though. Which is good, because I think I like making them more than wearing them anyway.

Well, no. There's London Expo in October which is fantastic, but Manchester is great because it's small, new, and there's a lot of things to do in Manchester that aren't 5 miles away.

And the /cgl/ meet-up is usually pretty fun.

I really want to meet up with some seagulls, but I actually don't know anybody on 4chan who lives nearby or who is attending the Manchester con.
I want people to come back on /cgl/ and be like, "Yeah, spoony looked nothing like she in her pictures, and she was really annoying... we had to ditch her in Subaway" haha

My dad is basically waiting for me to do a comic book hero, he loves comics. I totally will of course.
My mother wants me to do super cool make-up. She's always giving me suggestions whenever she hears of me putting together another outfit.
I let them borrow my mascot suits and wigs for halloween or whatever costume parties they have.
So, as long as my dad doesn't see me in skanky outfits (he lets me know "you look like a skank." direct quote.) he's totally fine with it.
We both want to go to Comic-con. My dad would make an awesome black green lantern...or spawn (he's a body builder also). Sigh.

My parents didn't really care. Mum helps with the sewing a little bit but I still feel strange showing her photos of my costumes.
Thank god she doesn't know I'm doing /a/-tan... yet.

Also yeah, Manchester MCM is quite nice. Went last year in casual clothes to see what it'd be like. Just hope the weather is really nice again.

I've been English since forever? Only been posting here for FOUR YEARS, dammit.

Anywho, I've never been to a Manchester Expo because Manchester seems a long way to go for an Expo. I may do Amecon this summer, but honestly I don't know. I never plan far in advance.

Oh, got another story. Got hired to clean up my uncle and aunt's home for my nephew's party. They sort of knew I was into Japanese stuff because my grandmother has a big mouth (I got Hello Kitty for years for gifts despite not liking it, solely because it was Japanese). Well, my uncle is a preacher and I rarely ever have one on one conversations with him but he had to drive me home after I was finished cleaning for the day and on the drive back he started asking me about the Japanese music I liked and the usual stuff like "Do you understand what they're saying?" and then.. he asked why some of them looked like girls. I was a visual kei fan at the time.

Hello awkward. I ended up explaining it as since this was rock music there weren't many female musicians so to connect with the audience some of the guys dressed feminine, a bit how back in the day before women were allowed to perform on stage they had men do the roles of women. Ended up adding on that some of them wore kimono (which he knew what that was) and said that kimono were actually for women and yukata were for men but they looked alike.. or something like that. Anyway, the conversation dies and the rest of the drive is awkward silence.

Get to their house the next day to start cooking for the party and my uncle comes over to where I am, still in his pajamas and bathrobe tied shut, and goes "Hey Iso! I'm wearing my kimono today!" and I'm just left sort of staring at him and dying on the inside.

My parents are totally cool about it. My mom wishes I cosplayed more girls, but she likes that I'm sewing and my dad likes making props with me.

The first time my dad saw me in a short wig he did a triple-take. Like…. he had no idea who I was. My mom played like she knew better and was all, "that's your DAUGHTER, honey, OBVIOUSLY!!!" She had been through this before when I was in high school... she couldn't pick me out of our marching band formation, even though I was the only one that played my instrument, hahahaha (everyone had to wear their hair up and in their shako because we were judged partially on uniformity).

Now my parents are used to pretty much whatever I show up to their house in. I came by after a photoshoot one day with my face covered in grime and fake blood and my dad didn't even blink.

They probably regarded me as a lost cause like eleven years ago anyway.
