Using your criteria, and not going by other factors, a few things make sense to me:
Flashiness:
the mecha cosplays have the advantage because it's flashy from a
distance. Sewn costumes have a hard time competing with that.
Recognizable:
Oscar has been around since the late 70's, and between the manga,
anime, Takarazuka, and even current-day marketing has a large footprint
over multiple generations. Bubblegum Crisis is about 8 years behind her,
though still very popular and known in its own right. Tiger and Bunny
is huge now, but has only been big in recent times, and even that is
only with the younger generations who are very current with their
knowledge of what's running right now.
Craftmanship...this one
is tricky, because you have to look at mecha suits in an entirely
different way than you look at sewn work, so comparing them is like
comparing apples with pea plants. But in this case I think the costumes
in the upper end of winners were even when put next to each other, and
likely the best in their respective classes of cosplay.
Overall, I
think it could have gone any number of ways. The top entries were all
pretty damn close to one another, and all were good entries, so whoever
would have come out on top I would have been glad to see win. |
