The Toronto one was a fuck up?

I think they didn't expect so many people. There were few panels, only using two rooms. Everything ended at 7. Could of had more to do. I'm used to fan anime cons that are like one crazy disorganized yet entertaining party where you stagger off to sleep at some crazy hour then try to get back at another. With viewing rooms, video game rooms or whatnot you can sit and rest in, so there's always something to wander in and watch.

The lines to get in on Saturday were crazy. The prereg and buying got sent to the same place at first. One huge line that went up and down. Then we moved... because they added line space down stairs. Staff didn't seem to understand why anyone was upset.

It also could have used, I'm not sure how to say it, more love? Some of the groups like the ghostbusters and the video game tournament brought something like a community and sense of hanging out. But then I'm used to cons where there's a forum everyone has been planning fan meets. Most of what to do was walk around buying things (lucky I liked the AA and hall.)

Also room 109 ran out of water.

I still had a lot of fun, it was just different than I thought it would be, and not well organized for such a huge crowd in some places.

Fun though, went to the sketch panel. Wish there had been more panels. Missed the fucking reboot panel and didn't get a chance to talk to victor lucas

Just wait till they start making the smaller anime cons at different times of the year effectively blocking fan run start ups.

I have some, I'll post them when I get home from work.

Overall it was a Hobbystar con, which generally isn't that exciting... but when you consider how disorganized and unreliable the Vancouver con scene is? It was a nice change to know there is an even that can afford to run and follow through on the few things it does promise.

Also, affordably priced in comparison to $70 will probably be a disaster con.

Now that's one of the reasons why I went FE instead of AR this year. I'll see how AR does. If people like it I'll be switching.

The price they're charging for a first year convention is outrageous. People take a gamble going to new events, especially when scheduled right on top of so many others... and they have no proof that it'll last a day, never mind be worth a $70 pricetag which is more than most major established cons are.

AR staff if you're reading this, there is nothing wrong with starting SMALL. I would rather pay $20 for a little dealers room and artist alley that I know won't collapse than $70 on something that promises big and has high chances of not delivering.

Is there any hope that AR will be worth it? since I'll be bus-ing from Vancouver Island and spending at least 300 on a hotel alone.

I'm just waiting on the word about AR and its AA scene after this year. I'm still doubtful of how successful AR will be for its first time, and it's hard to swallow $150 for an AA table that includes one fare and unskirted table, at least in my opinion. I guess luckily for them I believe their AA tables have filled up.

It's hard to know. That's a lot of money. The group has experience from working on AE, I think, but AE had many problems over the years.

For me the 300$ hotel would kill my going, but I live here so it wouldn't be an issue (instead it's really that I have no idea what I'm doing that month since I'm trying to switch jobs because fuck cleaning washrooms anymore.)

It's because they don't want to grow from small to big, they want to have a big return and big crowd right away. Except they don't have the money to do it, so they're basically trying to pay for the con through their badges.
