I rarely post here, but since I'm going to one of my first cons, I have to know: How easy is it to make decent friends at one?

Well if you meet someone and turns out they go to the same university as you do they become super rad awesome friends. Unless you have some forum other than cons to hang out with the people you meet the friendships will be shallow and undefined.

But when it comes to meeting people at cons? Just talk to them. Be the initiator. That way you can be in control of targets and topical conversation. If you don't know how to make friends normally, it's just as hard at a con. These are basic social skills you should know.

There are ways to make friends at cons. If a person is into the same cosplay or anime series at a meetup, or the same video game as you. Or you get randomly wondered into a random event at a anime con.

Try finding someone who cosplays from an anime you like and tell them how much you love their cosplay. Maybe take a photo and ask for a hug if you can't figure out how to start the conversation right away.

I didn't make any con friends until my fourth convention, don't feel bad if you don't make any right away.

I got pulled into a DC group while they were doing a photoshoot.

From my experience, /co/splay has more sane people than cospl/a/y.

It seems horror stories only come from weeaboo's. I didn't get anything weird when I did an anime cosplay but I was only there for an hour.

All that aside, everyone I've met was pretty sane and legit.
