Is it possible to make a good lolita coordinate with clothing from only chain store and high street brands?
    >> Anonymous 04/10/12(Tue)17:53 No.5700238
    Uh why?
    >> Anonymous 04/10/12(Tue)17:56 No.5700249
Blouse, yes. Jewelry/accessories, yes. Skirt, possibly. Jsk/dress, definitely not.

Finding a dress with the lolita silhouette is close to impossible, and it will show.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/12(Tue)17:56 No.5700253
    That's...a weird question.

If they so happen to sell a skirt or dress that fits with the lolita style, then yes. But that hardly ever happens, so realistically, probably not.
    It's *possible* but not *probable*
    Esp not this season.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/12(Tue)17:56 No.5700254
Yes, but it depends on what kind of lolita you're going for. Anything OTT, sweet or classic, you likely won't be able to find because it's not something that most people will buy. However, I've seen a lot of decent JSKs and stuff that can be worked for casual or classic. Print dresses are limited unless you want some kind of bright floral but cardigans, blouses, and skirts can be found anywhere. Accessories with flowers and vintage looking jewelry are easy to find as well.

Look for shops like charlotte rouses, forever 21, belk, kohl's, etc.

Petticoat's though, you'll likely have to find online since they're not commonly sold.

Because I often see things that are loliable there, and I'm wondering if anyone has made an outfit using only loliable things that wasn't made for lolita.

    >>5700256
There's no rule about using Main St. clothing in lolita outfits, if that's your concern. Usually though, the skirt or dress would have to be from a loli brand just because you're unlikely to find something at a regular store.

    >> Anonymous 04/10/12(Tue)17:59 No.5700266
No, it is not. Even the poofiest high street dresses won't accomodate pettis properly, and if they do, they will look like sundresses with a petti squished underneath. Inb4 a-line, less poof etc. Loli dresses with less poof can work when all the other elements in a coord are lolita. If you have a coord made up by solely non-loli elements, it just won't work. It is best to get lolita main pieces and then maybe you can find cardis, blouses and accessories from high street stores to coord them with.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/12(Tue)17:59 No.5700268
    possible? yes.
    Difficult? yes
    probable? no

It CAN happen but very rarely does. It is usually attempted by noobs who can't afford brand. Lolita is just such a specialized style that even though a few offbrand pieces can be worked into an outfit, doing a whole look from normal stores usually lacks the details and intricacy that makes a loli outfit loli.

I recently got into lolita again, after selling all my lolita clothing, so my whole outfit is from chain-stores like H&M and BikBok. The dress could probably be a bit longer, but I don't think it's too bad.

that's not what it means at all. it's a derogatory term for asian people who look 'too much' like they're part of asian culture, and haven't yet acclimated to white culture. it's an insult.
asian people sometimes say it facetiously about themselves but that's a totally different matter. it's really nasty to call someone a fob or say they look fobby. like what the fuck

It is possible to make something decent, I think
It would be really really hard to make it look as good as something originally intended for lolita, though. You can make some pretty o.k. casual or classic coords though. I used to wear lolita and I found some pretty nice things from department stores and mainstream clothing stores. It helps if you're small enough to wear kid's sizes.
Pic related, I got everything in this pic from Fred Meyer/Sears/Forever 21 (and Goodwill, ha). I think it turned out decently - definitely not as good as a coord made with brand/lolita-specific clothing, but pretty nice.

I've heard the term fob before and while I don't think it's necessarily a positive one, I also don't think extremely derogatory.

However, I've never heard it in association with Asian fashion. As another anon mentioned, it's generally used to describe recent immigrants. Idk where you're getting "reclaimed for Asian fashion" from.

This is a good example of why we usually tell newbies to avoid high-street dresses and skirts.... cause they say 'but it fits a petti comfortably!' and this is what they mean. This dress is not meant for a petti, the petti is distorting its shape and makes it look like trash.

This. I've never heard it as anything but a deragatory term, definitely nothing that people will brag about at the very least. As for using it to describe an asian into asian fashion, I think of my parents or grandparents who wear either bright matching silk sets or something from their country of origin. Ya'know, actual asian fashion instead of western-influenced like

I think you can even if you have to make some adjustments to the pattern ( the skirt to fit a petticoat and stuff). Its just that most lolitas are just really bad a coordinating outfits. They have no fashion sense at all even though they like to think they do. I wish there was a nice book or article on coordinating outfits that could just get spread around the community.
