I think you don't understand her intentions. Being someone other than Asian or White makes cosplay more difficult because finding someone you identify with or look like, in cosplay choice or scene may be more difficult.

I'm not saying I agree with the Tumblr harpies who think being dark skinned makes you oppressed or magically means you've had a life of struggle. However, not all positive or informative race discussion means the person in question is a "social justice warrior" crusader.

You guys are just looking to stir drama over petty shit. You are almost as bad as the people who think all feminists=misandrist lesbians.

Making a new thread "outing" someone seems like such a bother when you could very well talk to her on FB in the first place.

This? I'm half black, but look like a mix of everything else under the sun. Get mistaken for Hispanic ALOT. Anyways, I can see where Soni is going since I too sometimes get alot of bullshit irl alone about my skin tone, my background concerning ethnicity and my family alone has gotten alot of unneeded shit because we were black kids raised by white parents in a predominantly white community. She's making it seem a little extreme by making panels? Yaya made a Socialogy based panel. People make panels on bullshit like this once in a while, it's just the person who goes about doing it that makes people pissed off.

I never understood why that kind of thing is offensive in costumes. Blackface is one thing, because it's a stereotypical black character and is directly taking the piss out of black people, but if you want to dress up as a character with a different skin colour to you, why is it offensive? It's just doing it for accuracy.

I'm friends with both on facebook, been on Soni's tumblr before this Anthy cosplay drama and Soni's always been standing on that soapbox. Soni, shut up. You're tan but not THAT tan that it's difficult to cosplay characters . If people want to cosplay dark skinned characters, let them, just like you cosplay white/light skinned characters. It's not offensive if they color their skin to match the character's look. Now I often question why they decided on that specific character out of thousands of other characters that they could probably do better, but I'm not assuming they did it to be a bitch. I was defending you until this point. If you're going to make an exception, make an exception for EVERYONE, not just yourself. At least she painted her skin. This is where PoC gets messy. There are plenty of ethnicities that can be grouped under PoC with varying tones of skin. I'm middle eastern but my skin isn't that dark, is it offensive if I cosplay someone with a major tan?

Am I no longer a PoC, even though my mother and grandfather are both caramel coloured?

Cosplay is about fantasy. Be whoever you want to be regardless of your gender or the colour of your skin. It's not racist unless you're legitimately intending it to be or making an insensitive ethnic parody like oldschool blackface.

"Hispanic" isn't a race/genetic archetype. If you're Hispanic, you're either of south american native, African slave, or straight up white colonist descent. You will most likely be a thorough mixture of all three, with variances in black depending on where you live. Dom. Republic is full of black people, while Argentina has white people. I always want to throw a brick at shit like this. Cosplay is portraying a particular character. I don't care if they're black, white, tan, blue, green, grey, orange, polka dot, whatever. I don't give a fuck if you choose to lighten, darken, etc... your skin for the character. The whole point is to PORTRAY the character. Look at all the shit we put ourselves through. We wear contacts, wigs, bald caps, pad our chest, bind our chests, paint ourselves every color of the rainbow, wear corsets, ungodly uncomfortable shoes, prosthetic teeth, eye patches, and an untold number of other things to modify the look of our body to match a character.

Guess what? People can LIKE characters of other races! You can't tell me I can't go and use some spray tan if the character has a darker complexion then me. Just like I can't go and tell my darker skinned friends to use a lighter foundation to lighten their skin.

I think it's more racist to turn around and yell at somebody for cosplaying a character outside their race. We're FUCKING GEEKS IN COSTUMES, why do so many people forget this. How many cosplayers get shit just for cosplaying period? Regardless of race. Many are looked down on as the shit of society and a bunch of freaks. My hobbies are being a warrior for social justice. Sorry, call me whatever you want, but I will never budge on this subject and will always make my stance very clear.

Do I think everyone should cosplay as whomever they want? Yes. Should they change their skin color, and this goes for people of all races and ethnicities? No, but that's my opinion. Do people still do it? Clearly.

My issue is the fact that she decided to put the fact that I was Hispanic and I cosplay as non-hispanic characters to as one justification for doing what she did and I'm sorry, but you don't get to use me to push your own agenda especially when I don't agree with it. Has she not fucking mentioned me, I would'n't have given two shits about what she wrote, but she went ahead and did it, and I can't, in good conscious, be put into that "Token Hispanic 'Friend'" role, a role that I absolutely detest. I would've loved to never have seen this, but when its being reblogged all over my dashboard and the 700 someodd mutual friends we have on my cosplay account and herself and commenting, it's very hard for me to ignore it.

So you guys can say all sorts of things about how I'm wrong and I'm a cunt, but this is one issue, especially when it directly involves me (cause let's face it, I'm the person she's talking about), I'm gonna say something about it.

The issue of minorities in cosplay and the blatant racism we experience inside and outside of the hobby has always been one of the things I've be interested to talk about, far before this whole thing erupted into the mess it is and it just reaffirms my stance.

So if you're offended by my opinion, that's all on you, but you won't be changing it. I respect that your opinions won't change either, and that's fine.

I have a black friend who can turn anything into a race issue. A lot of our discussions end with me not really being able to express my own opinion on these issues because I'm white and "just won't ever get it."

When it comes to cosplay her biggest complaint is that <1% of black anime characters have normal black hair, its usually purple or white. I don't think she would be complaining about this as much if she wasn't skinny and pretty. I know of plenty of other black and white folks alike who have even more limited cosplay options because of their looks or build.

If Soni "knew Jessie better" and knew she has done some mocking of people based on skin tone, she would have said that. Not taken what Jessie said and summed it up as "She was using me as a justification how dare she!"

When I mentioned that having natural black hair actually make it easier/more comfortable to hold wigs in place I think that's when the subject changed.

She even got mad at me once because I didn't agree with her that everyone in anime looks white because the Japanese just really really wish they were white. She also believes that they are especially racist towards blacks, but doesn't seem to grasp that the Japanese are racist against every other culture. Even ones that mostly look like them like Koreans and Chinese.

In my opinion, everyone should be allowed to cosplay anyone of any race. For me cosplay has never been about becoming the character, it's about dressing up as a character you love while still being you (just in a costume). As far as changing your skin tone to match the characters, it gets a bit trickier. I think subtle changes in skin tone is acceptable I.e. getting a tan in the sun or using a slightly lighter or darker foundation than usual. However when people go from white to 20 shades darker or vice versa it looks unnatural and seems unnecessary. Jessie for instance looks orange here

Mulattos resent the fact that they can never be “white,” and must accept a lower status as a “black.” They become hostile towards whites, who are the higher status group, even though they would have an even lower status if they were not partly white. Thus, whites who have mulatto children create enemies of whites, including themselves, another reason for whites to oppose miscegenation.

You faggots need to check in with the real world. Painting yourselves black for "ACCURACY" doesn't mean dick to someone who's not hooked on your weeb cartoons. It's fucking offensive as hell. Try wearing that shit out on the street and see what happens. It is NOT right. You can't compare it to crossdressing, or painting yourself a fantasy color, or anything else.

And those of you putting yourself in the place of token black/POC/whatever role? "Oh I totally think this is okay, use me as an example when you need to justify how okay this is--you've talked to a REAL BLACK PERSON and they gave you the okay!" Do all of you realize how degrading that is? It's not okay.

Is it black face if the character is Indian? If the end result people wouldn't know you painted your skin unless you told them? Or if the end result simply looked like another of you ethnicity with a really deep tan?

Everyone screaming "blackface" and offensive seem to be under the delusion that Anthy is black when she isn't. She's Indian, like from India Indian. That's about as black as a Native American.

So honestly, the only people who can tell us if they're offended or not are Indian people. None of whom I've seen bitch. On tumblr it was mostly white SJ activists with the occasional 15 year old black girl. Here it's one Latino chick.

This so much. It's canon that Anthy is from India too.
What always gets me when the "blackface" argument comes up is that most people have no clue what blackface looks like. It's not about just darkening your skin.

TBH, the girl could've tanned herself enough to be that color without makeup. Look at Jnigs or Snooki, queens of fakebake/tanning. Is she being racist because she chooses to have darker skin? Are people who wear suntan colored pantyhose being racist? Are people using bronzer being racist? Seriously.

There's a huge difference between darkening skin and blackface. It's more than color changing. Blackface used to be used for minstrel shows and would incorporate very dark brown or black face paint and huge light colored lips drawn on. In addition to the obvious caricature, they would act in a mocking way. So simply being darker/tanner than normal and acting in a respectful/non mocking way isn't even close to the concept of blackface.

This. Mister Popo is a prime modern example of blackface. Yet no one bitches about him. And cosplayers have been changing their skintone for years. Not just in terms of going grey, green, blue, etc.

I have tanned myself out for doing Jack Sparrow. This Esmeralda? She's actually /very/ fair, she's not actually Roma. Ichigokitty changed her skintone for Jasmine, she's not really Arabic.

Hey bro, look up redlining and white flight. That's what turns where blacks go into shitty places.

    That's basic Sociology 101.

And it's not some big white conspiracy. We're just given the message from a young age through the media that black people are more likely to misbehave/commit crimes and watch them more closely then we do white people. It's not hard. Yes, there are black people who commit crimes, but a black person is also more likely to get caught for shoplifting or for other crimes. They're also more likely to be poor and resort to crime to make ends meet.

So, what causes the Black Rage in a fully black society like that of Ethiopia? Their homicide rate of 25.5 per 100,000 (2008 WHO data) is suspiciously similar to the African American homicide offending rate of 25.4 per 100,000 (the average of 2000, 2004 and 2005 US Bureau of Justice Statistics).

    http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/statistics/Homicide/Homicide_level.xlsx

    http://www.columbia.edu/~rs328/Homicide.pdf

The Ethiopians were not colonized during the Scramble for Africa, and in all of their history have suffered only five years of Italian occupation and 13 years under communism. Nothing particularly horrible in comparison to the nations of Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia like Ukraine or Vietnam or Cambodia - all of which are, however, much safer.

    >redlining

Redlining is a symptom of black failure, not a cause. If blacks had good credit ratings, banks wouldn't need to redline black areas, would they?

    >We're just given the message from a young age through the media that black people are more likely to misbehave/commit crimes and watch them more closely then we do white people.

I'd argue the media's image of black people is overwhelmingly positive to the degree it's completely detached from reality. Look at Mad Men, House, The Wire etc. I remember a Korean girl told me once before she came to America, she had the impression all black people were kind, jovial middle class professionals because that's the media image of them that is presented.

Um, wrong. I'm not middle-class, I'm upper-lower class. My mom is a NYC school teacher and my dad owns a hole in the wall business selling paper money. I'm a social worker. My family doesn't make enough money to send me to college, so I have an internship that pays for my senior year and provides a monthly stipend and I'm contractually obligated to work for them for a year. I have loans and qualified to receive the max financial aid from the govt.

I don't have any scholarships at the moment. I was offered one scholarship for grad school because I'm a minority but can't accept it because I can't afford grad school and it wasn't enough to even cover 1/4 of my tuition. I'm not going to take out more loans on top of the 25,000 I already owe for grad school when I can get my MSW in
    NY for far cheaper.

The point of that post was that I have more than what a lot of people I work with have and I appreciate the hard work my parents have put into making sure my needs were provided for. They came to this country with nothing and now I'm ready to graduate from an excellent university and it's a legacy of their hard work. It put into perspective that am lucky to have been given this lot in life. It's not much, I don't get to go in extravagant vacations, get to buy fancy clothes, or get to eat out everyday in a fancy restaurant, but I'm happy with what I have. If I were in dire need if something, I could just call my father and ask for it things like a new pair of shoes or some clothes, but I don't. That's why I get a monthly stipend, to cover for these.

I read half the thread and stopped (sorry, its long) and after all that, I have this to say:

    1) my boyfriend is far FAR darker than soni and he doesn't bitch this hard, nor does he care if people make themselves dark because he also makes himself light for certain cosplays.
    2) shut the fuck up soni, and stop making poc hate themselves because some fat retard like you decided to represent them all.
    3) its not offensive to be accurate to the character. At all. Skin color, hair color, eye color, it shouldnt matter. And if you can go white, you can sit down and shut the fuck up if someone wants to go dark. Why is one okay but not the other? Don't fight racism with racism, idiot. Accuracy is accuracy. Get over it. (only exception is things like the character having a swastika, etc)
    4) making a panel on how hard it is for poc in the cosplay world, when you're not even that dark to begin with, is like me making a documentary on how hard it is being white girl in a, say, spanish neighborhood. They're both ignorant as FUCK. And your only real complaint is "hurr there's not a lot of dark characters, wahh everyones white" no shit bitch, anime is made in JAPAN

    tl;dr
Soni, you're not the cosplay ambassador to all people of color in the cosplay world. Shut the fuck up, PLEASE

Okay, whitey here. I honestly want to ask the social justice group why I should give a fuck. They are going to bash me whether I support them of not, and I don't see anything about them that makes them different from me. Being white didn't give me money or power, it doesn't get me a job, it doesn't cure my mental illness (PTSD), it doesn't cure my physical ailments, it doesn't make me popular, it doesn't make people think I'm any more pretty, it doesn't make me exempt from hate or violence, and as far as I can tell it doesn't give me any privilege. In the same way, someone being black isn't going to make me really assume anything about them. When I see a black person, I don't assume their grades were lower than mine in school, I don't assume that they are violent, I don't assume that they make less money than me (Hell, I'm on food stamps,) and I don't think twice about it unless I'm asked to describe their appearance. Example: "Maria, do you think Sherry likes me?" "Which Sherry, I know two of them." The answer is either going to be "The black one who watches Glee with your gf", or "The one that wears too much make-up and has hair kind of like mine".

In before "Whitey trying to be edgy". If I don't care about race, then I don't care.

Jackasses exist in every group, even ones who supposedly know better, hence social justice jackasses. Not being racist is great, and if you understand that there are still people who will assume a black person is less intelligent, poorer, etc., even better. Privilege isn't very quantifiable, and who the fuck knows, maybe one day you walked by a guy on the street who raped the next Mexican girl he saw or something.

As far as I can tell, the only reasonable people who discuss social justice are the ones who can keep things from just being about themselves. Not in the sense of "well just because it's happened/not happened to YOU", but people who can understand everyone's experiences are different, and consider those along with their own.

On the rape bit, someone picked me because I fit their fetish when I was a child. Hence, the PTSD. In other words, they intentionally wanted to rape a light skinned, light haired female child.

I get what your saying, though. I think racism is just as disgusting as sexism, homophobia, or religious intolerance, and I get pissed off when someone makes fun of someone for their race. But, that's due to your own personal issues with your skin colour. That's pretty unfair and a silly thing to hold grudges on.

I have red hair and grew up in a very rural area of a country where it's not something you usually see, and was bullied quite badly for it. When I see women dyeing their hair various shades or red, I couldn't care less.

It's got nothing to do with you, and it's certainly not something worth taking offence to.

If people are saying they're ok with being another skin colour, even if it's just for cosplay, surely that's a step towards acceptance? Or is it not serious enough for all you victimised minorities? (obviously completely different issue if people are being deliberately offensive, but this is hardly the case in cosplay)

hispanic is a general term for people of latin/spanish descent. Puerto Ricans have a different culture from Mexicans or Cubans or Argentinians.

Same way Asians don't all have the same culture. Chinese differ from Indians, etc.

The only reason why "black" culture exists is because they don't identify with Africans. However ask any real African (i mean Nigerians, Ghanians, Moroccans, etc) if they identify with black culture, and they will tell you no. They all have their own separate traditions as well.

It's more of my personal issues with others using my skin color as a fashion trend. Now it's fashionable to be tan but still it's ok to mock people who are actually tan act as if their life experiences are invalid. If we do speak up against racist acts we are the ones who are ostracized. We are not allowed our own personal opinions on things because if a white person has a friend who is ok with a racist act then that means every person of that race should be ok with it.

I love my skin color, culture, food. I do not like seeing people who don't respect it using it like it's a fashion trend.

I ignore people who do it not because I'm magically going to find acceptance for it, it's that I don't find the argument worth it because when I have spoken up it never makes a difference anyways. But I will never be ok with it, my only consolidation is that the people who go to tanning beds will most likely get skin cancer and age themselves faster.

    >>5647706 Whites have no country to call their own. Everyone else does.

    That would be Europe.
They don't have lands of their own cause they decided to conquer lots of other people's lands that belong to someone else from the get go.

did you even read what you wrote?

    >> why do you need a meeting when your family is the same race, your community has people of the same race, idfk.
I think most people who are racists are the ones saying, "WHITE PEOPLE JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLES I GO THROUGH IN AMERICA." You're labeling people as white. You're calling them ignorant. DATS RACIST.

When you go out into the wide world you will meet people outside your family and community who do not understand.
Sort of how when women entered the work force men just didn't know they were being assholes. So women had to for coalitions so they could get advice and make changes.

I don't know what your view of religious intolerance is, but I consider religious intolerance to be an act of judging someone based on their religion, or lack of religion. When someone commits a hate crime in the name of their religion, it's an act of religious intolerance towards the party that they are attacking.

At the moment, minority religious groups (Non organized religions, agnostics, atheists, gnostics, neopagans, reconstructs, etc.) are pushing coexistence. So, to support their freedoms, you would have to support the tolerance of /all/ religious creeds. That might seem counterproductive, but they would (Mostly) rather have a bit of peace and tolerance that the complete defeat of the offending religions.

Honestly, I think that's a view that other social justice groups could learn from. Push to be accepted in society, and to have completely equal ground. Don't push for another group of people to have to grovel at your feet for all eternity, it's not going to get you anywhere. (That, and it causes people who would otherwise support your cause to stop caring.)
