Well, they look like women in their mid-20s trying to cosplay teens from a videogame/arcade game/anime. And they succeed pretty well. They may not all look quite the right age, but everything is well done.

Yukiho and Hibiki have awful faces for their character. Miki is 0k, and Takane's wig is too light for her skintone. Hardly perfection, I've seen better.

That's not what it's about. With the exception of L4U, which is Taiko no Tatsujin on crack, it's about raising idols and trying to become a super idol. And about Namco Bandai milking the crap out of the DLC.

Whether the girls are happy or having fun is not what the game is about. It is an aspect of the game but not what they're about AT ALL. Very little relevance.

Out of curiosity, those of you that play the im@s games...how do you get and play them? The only English translated one I've found was SP. Are there other English patches out there? Or do you play them in moonrunes? And if so, how the heck do you play a game that relies SO heavily on your conversations with the girls and saying the right things if you're not fluent in Japanese? I just can't imagine how I could play the game with any success if it's in Japanese.

The fanbase for this is TINY in America. If you do even a slightly obscure outfit, you'd be lucky to have one or two people recognize you. If you do one of the super recognizable ones, you still would only be recognized a few times, and usually by people who were only mildly familiar with the franchise. How is THAT cosplaying for attention?

Some people cosplay it purely because it's cute, yes. But it's not like it's some flavor of the month where everyone is gonna be fawning over you. Plus, the costumes are rarely beginner-level for cosplayers, they mostly require hefty skill and time to make, and not very many casual cosplayers are going to put forth that much effort for a series they know jack about.

I personally don't judge im@s cosplayers who don't play the games IF they are really familiar with the characters, which isn't hard to be. Sadly not all of the fanbase is like me in that regard. These games are not easily accessible for Americans to play. And now that the anime exists, the whole thing's kind of moot.

On the other hand, it is very surprising if there are any females that own a Japanese Xbox 360 and do play/have played the The iDOLM@STER (original) or L4U.

I can get a little nitpicky when looking at idolm@ster cosplayers, I'll admit that. As an obsessive fan it comes with the territory. But in the end, if the costume is well made, the wigs are good, and so on, it just makes me happy to see it, even if the person's face seems "off". and since some guys like to crossplay them, it's bound to happen once in a while.

in other words, if a serious effort to look good shows through, it makes me happy just to see someone cosplaying what I love.
