  • Dear Londoners: I am in your lovely rainy city for the next few days. If you'd fancy a spot of tea and dessert,
send an e-mail to london@4chan.org with a sentence or two about yourself,
why you aren't Jack the Ripper, and include a timestamp.
    Cheers, —mootykins

Could any of you direct me to a place that does decent commissions? Pic related, it's what I'd like commissioned. The armor, helmet and mask and possibly the Duster as well.

Gave up on trying to make it yourself?

Don't you feel any love for what you want to do? What's the point of wearing someone else's work?

What's wrong with commissioning things exactly?
    >> Anonymous 03/15/12(Thu)21:21 No.5605739

I work all week and I realized I don't have the time for all the trial and error involved in attempting something and I can't even find any tutorials on basic concepts. Working so many hours a week does mean I have a disposable income however.

I don't go to cons or anything like that. I've never made a costume before either, I have zero knowledge on where or how to even start and getting into a hobby like this is extremely difficult.

    >>5605580

How much would you estimate this would cost in labor alone?
    >> Vernedead !!6JbuOyC+b2w 03/15/12(Thu)22:49 No.5606053
    >>5605739

I think about $400 in labor.

    Maybe $800-$1000 in all.

That's just my estimate. I would contact the Kommissar about that.

    OP here. I'm not Brian.

I sent an email to Kommisar but I haven't heard from him right away and it looks like he does some hardcore, very serious commissions. Do you guys know anyone else who is just as capable? I just need the armor made more or less, I see like three or four NCR Ranger costumes made in the past two years and none of them specify in any useful detail what/how to make armor like that.
    >> Anonymous 03/16/12(Fri)20:56 No.5608567
    >>5606053

Hmm. $400 for a finished costume I might consider but that's as high as I'd go probably. He seems too serious for what I want, which is just a bare bones costume. Duster, Helmet, Vest. No lights or anything special.
    >> Anonymous 03/18/12(Sun)00:12 No.5612378
Just want to bump this so it doesn't 404.

The last three days I've been working on a helmet out of paper I got from a PDF. I'll post pictures and I'll want advice on where to go from here but it's taken me this long because I work so much, I could only do an hour or two a day.

I made this out of hot glue and cardpaper.

Now what? What do people usually do to make it better and stuff? Paper Mache' or whatever it's called?

    Bondo, fiberglass resin, etc, etc.

There are lots of things for you to pick from.

Fiberglass I guess? Cheap/Expensive? How to apply? Do I sand it smooth? How thick can I put it on, how thins should it go on? Should I cut the eye holes pre or post fiberglass? Etc.
    >> Anonymous 03/18/12(Sun)03:00 No.5612917
Also how would I go about the body armor? Eva Foam I've seen but what do I do? Use a knife and carefully cut and sand it down to the right shape?

Do you know any good tutorials? I had no idea eva foam required layering and bending, I thought it came in big sheets and you carved whatever you needed into it.

naw just googLE and test it yourself. Youre a fan on a decent series, I know you have the brains to figure it out.
    >> Anonymous 03/18/12(Sun)03:31 No.5612995
Well, the one question still stands. Should I cut the eye holes now or later? Will it be easy or possible to cut the eye holes post fiberglass? I'd imagine it would since applying pressure with a knife won't cause the mask to collapse into it's self but I don't know how tough fiberglass is.

Minor bump? I'll be off to bed soon and I'm going to start fiberglassing in the morning.

Also I added the Comm and Optic unit. So the paper craft portion of it is done.

So today I went out. The only thing I couldn't find was a duster. I'm waiting for my mask to cure with the first coat the resin and than I'm going to use spray adhesive to put the fibercloth on it and put another resin coat ontop of it and when I've done that enough to please me I'm going to use Bondo to go over it and than sand it smooth and all.

I also got foam mats, cut out the shape of the armor, I'm going to dremel them smooth around the edges and use a heat gun to warp them so they fit well.

So I made this concept/test armor out of scraps I had. It came out pretty shitty but it's perfect to fuck around with when I play Nerf and we 'LARP' and shit

Basically I'm going to pick up more resin and make a better one, bondo it and all that. Any advice on how to make curves/smooth edges?

The helmet is drying still, tomorrow I think I may bondo it, sand it and paint it.
    >> Anonymous 03/19/12(Mon)01:46 No.5616860
I did this for supanova, the only hard part was the foam vest, i'd post pictures but it pales in comparison to that one. that and i've redone the helmet completely. the trick with the armor is you can just make the front, since the back is covered by the duster. I eyeballed and sketched out half the torso, then flipped the stencils over so it was symmetrical.
    >> Anonymous 03/19/12(Mon)18:45 No.5618791
My bf has been thinking on and off about doing commissions for this costume but he isn't cheap either, I've seen the work he put into it and his price he's been telling me sounds right for the labor he puts into everything.
If you know someone who sews, there is a pattern for the duster somewhere, you just need to fiddle with the pattern to add the long sides.
For a moment, I even thought the OP picture was him, haha but then I noticed the differences.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)12:13 No.5621410

I emailed Kommisar and a complete costume was about the $1000 range.

If your boy friend can make me the whole costumer cheaper than I may actually commission him.

At the very least the vest or duster I may need done. I'm still working and trying to make them, the helmet is still a WIP because I've been working so much I haven't had time to fuck with it but I just picked up more resin and stuff.

    Also some questions:
    * Can I use resin and bondo on EVA foam?
    * Anyone know a good way to get smooth edges with EVA foam? Dremel and sandpaper just rip it up.
    * Should I use fiberglass cloth on the outside AND inside of the helmet or just the inside?
    >> Anonymous 03/20/12(Tue)12:13 No.5621412
Post them anyway please. I'd like to get more references.

V.2 Armor came out much better. Sanded it down by hand this time which was just what it needed and I painted it. Just not sure what to use as a backing.
