It would probably work best if you sewed the black pieces onto the white of the collar - you might have to satin stitch them on, especially considering how small some of the black pieces are.

One - my hair is maybe an inch and a half long right now (military), will I even NEED a wig cap?

Two - how do I style this nigga?! It's kanekalon fibers whatever the fuck that means.

Yes, it's my first time doing a wig, normally my cosplays haven't required one yet.

D= This artwork is so cute! What is it from?

Also, I highly recommend using a heavier fusible interfacing and attach it to the wrong side of the fabric, especially for making it stiff like that. You could line it if you want to cover the white of the interfacing.

You can also make a little, poofy petticoat for the underside to help it keep it's shape.

About the armor boots, I'm considering making them out of wonderflex.

But my only concern is how to build them into form fitting knee-high armor boots that I can be able walk with.
I'm thinking about velcro to attach it together. But I'm not so sure where to start.

Alright, that looks like a black unitard - a looser one than is typical - over a white turtleneck, which, if you're worried about the heat, you could make just a turtleneck top. There's a silk jacket over it with a belt, white gloves, and boots. Then, obviously, the mask.

I can't help you with the mask.

The jacket looks like a basic pattern - I might actually look for a woman's pattern, but just modify a normal jacket to be sans bells and whistles - no pockets unless you want them, no buttons or button holes.

    The gloves you can buy.

The boots should probably be made with boot covers, as they are definitely fabric. Don't try to paint shoes or anything. And by the way, boot covers don't have to cover the entire foot. So just get a black boot and make a cover that doesn't surround the whole foot area. The decoration on the top can probably be made with fabric too, maybe over a foam base.

Then, use the same fabric for the sleeves.

And, on second look, a unitard might be too tight. The closest thing I've seen is actually two-piece long underwear.

Sorry if this isn't very helpful!

Have you looked in any store nearby? I'm not exactly sure what a bolo slide is (sorry), but from the looks of it it's something used in crafting, which makes it possible that a local Michael's or JoAnn's or some other craft store might have one.

    >>5565931
Search for topless sandals. They didn't really catch on since I've heard of them, but I imagine the idea is the same. Maybe buy a pair, or try to find some of the same adhesive? I have no experience with them, so I'm afraid I can't help.

    >>5565873
Alright, feel free to ignore this, as I have never done costuming on that sort of scale. But, as a great buyer of shoes -

If you want to use something like wonderflex, the top part of the boot looks like it will work well if you make two pieces - either attach the kneepiece and upper piece, or the kneepiece and the bottom piece. I would personally attach it to the top piece, but I believe both will work.

As for connecting the two, attach the two pieces with something elastic so that you can bend your knee. Maybe a metallic or elastic fabric in the same color? When you stand straight, it will look like one piece, but you can bend your knee. And I would probably glue the fabric to the wonderflex or work something out with the hot wonderflex.

    Sorry if this helped little.

I posted this in the other help thread, but is there any way to make bias tape work well on a closed loop? Like, say, to reinforce the diamonds on Ghirahim's leggings?

    >>5566376
...ah, that would look so nice in velvet, too. Especially a high quality velvet. Pity.

It looks elegant, so yes I think that satin's or something like that probably your best bet - and definitely don't go with a low quality velvet, those ballet-leotard ones tend to be horrendous - but maybe if you could just do velvet on one part of the costume and a simpler, thick, matte fabric on the rest? I don't know.

    Not satin!

You can but nicer satin, but even with a nicer satin it very likely wouldn't drape and flow like her dress tends to.

Velvet would be amazing, but yes very cost prohibitive. I have seen stretch velvets that are more cost effective without looking like cheap velour, something like that would be nice.

Honestly, I would go to various fabric shops and feel the fabric. For a costume like Winnowill, you want something that flows softly but still feels heavy.

    Pic related.

Awesome choice btw. The world needs more Elfquest cosplay.

I'm going to be vacu-forming this into a helmet with a sheet of plastic. When I'm making the bust for it to form to, can I buy a block of foam and carve it out that way? Or is a method like what Volpin does recommended?
(he made an XYZ cross of two pieces of wood and poured in some brand of expanding foam, then carved that down)
First time vacu-forming, not sure if the hot plastic would come off of a normal block of foam.
    Thanks for any advice!

An absolute fallback plan if I cant form it is to paint a white Morphsuit. Would I be capable of breathing / seeing?

    I don't see why not!

The skirt itself is a modified circle skirt. I made the skirt larger than it would be at the waist for a normal circle skirt and then added box pleats. I made sure with the box pleats to fold them at an angle so that they would flare out instead of being straight all the way down the skirt.

I know it should be obvious, but measure out how much fold you want for each pleat before making the skirt. Don't just wing it.

The fabric is a lightweight polyester and the trim is bias which I made using the same fabric as the corset. It's a heavier cotton based fabric with a light stretch to it. (I forget what it's called.) despite the weight, the interfacing held up well.

Maybe for the ends, work in some wires to style it that way. Like the kind you use in fake plants. Then somehow color the hair and the wires black so it all blends in. [Since the hair looks very wiry anyways.]

On the topic of using Zentai suits (I'd like to know more about how people customize/paint them, especially the superhero cosplayers), I'm interested in cosplaying as either Apollo from P2:IS or Hyperion from P2:EP. I just have questions of:

1.) If I do go with zentai suits, should I buy white ones and then add the colored stripes in? I don't think I'd be able to get a red or black one to be completely white, you know?

2.) With using a zentai for the bodysuit, what material should I use for the rest of the costumes? I think using the same as the zentai suit (I assume it's lycra/spandex) would probably not work with the capes.

    Not a problem!

Whatever you pick, if you choose to go with the techniques above, make sure it's fairly lightweight, but completely opaque as the interfacing is white. (You could try lining it if you wanted.) Also make sure that you can iron it as I wouldn't recommend doing it with non-fusible interfacing.

    okay, here you go.

    1. This would involve some illusioning. You could make it walking or rolling, depending on how you want to do it. Its all a matter of making them stationary or not. No matter which way you do it, you'll probably want to make the wheels really, really sturdy. The only other way would be to put your feel flat on the ground, which may mess up the proportions. You can just attach the wheels to the side of your calves, then make your thighs yours.

    2. This would be really, really really difficult. It depends on how much time you have and how much skill/effort youre willing to put in. This is the only way I can think to make the wheels move without having your real legs showing.
Basically, you'd have to make a pretty strong support/brace that goes down the front of your shin. You'd be almost kneeling on the top of the wheel on a "fender" type thing. It looks like you'd have just enough room with how the casing on the back of her legs works. You would have to do this out of wood and metal for it to be at all safe. I dont recommend it, but if youre really brave, give it a try.
    >> Anonymous 03/05/12(Mon)00:51 No.5566966
    >>5566964
    continued

    3. This would be tough to balance on, but it would hide your feel. There is a tutorial for hooves that Ill post below that involves wearing a platform shoe with the heel cut off. Since your foot would be hidden, you wouldnt have to cut the heel off. I would, though, recommend adding a wooden block to the front of the shoe. It may be best to just make the entire wheel out of wood to keep it sturdy and make a hole for your foot with a shoe glued/nailed in. A lot of fur-suits have a tennis-shoe sewn into the paws so the feet can fit. That might work similarly.

I dont guarantee any of these, but maybe they'll be enough for you get your gears going.

    Good luck!

It looks like they took down the tutorial for the feet, but she explains it here. If you look around for info on digitigrade legs you should be able to find what suits your costume.

I don't think anybody really explained it well, but I was in that thread too... basically you make a bunch of circles with smaller inner diameters, snip them down one radius, and sew them together and iron out the seams, to get a spiral rather than a circle. The more circles in your spiral the more ruffly it is.

It's actually pretty easy! I'll upload an example of how it turns out when you're in a hurry irl in a minute.

Pretty much, cut out strips as wide as you want the frill (probably about 1.5"?) and add some seam allowance. Finish the edges however you want, either with a surger, by doubling over the fabric, or what have you, it doesn't make a huge difference for these. Make sure the length of your fabric is at least twice as long as the length you want to cover. Then gaaaather it all up either by hand or on your sewing machine, and stitch it on to the dress wherever you want it! In this case another option would be to box pleat the frill instead, which will look a little bit neater than the gathering, but either way should look pretty good. If anything box pleats might be a little too neat and tidy for frill.

I would do foam sheets with wired edges. You make the loop shapes first and then cover them with the hair. Trust me, you definitely want to cover them with the hair AFTER bending the loops otherwise the hair gets all scrunched up.

Also, yeah some sort of semi-rigid base sewn inside the wig that you could attach them to would be good.

I use this kind of thing for stuff like this sometimes. It can help.
    http://crossstitch.about.com/od/wastecanvas/p/plasticcanvas.htm

Instead of wire and foam, you could also use super heavy interfacing or buckram, which needs to be heat shaped, but can be sewn as well.

I've never used wonderflex, but that is another possible option as well.

I've got a costume which lights up where, due to design factors, I am going to have no choice but to be wired up from one central battery pack to lights on my torso and limbs... and the wires are going to have to cross over bare skin (and therefore be visible) in a few places. How do I best "cover up" the wires? I was thinking of mixing up some PAX or some other flexible paint in the color of my skin and painting the wires that'll be exposed with it, and then tacking them down with a bandaid or some double sided tape, but would that work?

(vague terms and no reference because this is going to apply for multiple costumes.)

If you don't see the top three settings (in orange) on your machine, then your machine doesn't have a buttonhole setting and you have a few options other than going out and buying a new sewing machine.

If you do, then great! First off you'll need a butthonhole foot. Once you have that, set your machine to the widest zig zag stitch and a very small stitch length (0-1 I believe) and start with the leftmost setting. Once you've sewn up to where you want your buttonhole to stop, switch to the middle. Then sew back down on the rightmost setting, and finish with the middle again.
    Does that make any sense?

I think spiral ruffles would create that exact shape. What you do is draw at large circle, and draw a spiral inside with the width as wide as the ruffle needs to be. cut on the line and finish the edges with a small rolled hem or serging, and attach to your apron. I guess you could do double layered ruffles this way, just be sure to pin your spirals together before you cut them out.

You'll have to make several spirals and sew them end to end to get the length that you want. I'd sew them together with a seam that is diagonal to the edges.

Pic related: How you should draw the spiral. REd lines are what I mean by sewing them diagonally. Cut them on the red lines and line 2 spirals up on the red lines and sew them together. I'd do this before sewing the 2 layers together if you're doing them doubled up.

Sure! And I'm sure you got it but just to be sure you need a buttonhole foot, not a zipper foot. buttonhole feet look like this and just serve to make sure the fabric isn't getting distorted while you're sewing the buttonhole.

derp I wasn't clear. Line one diagonal edge (red line) of the spiral up to the opposite to the next spiral. Meaning, line the inside diagonal edge of Spiral 1 up with the outside diagonal edge of spiral 2 to sew together to make a longer spiral. This is after you've cut out on the black line...

This sounds really confusing, I wish I could find a video to show you what I mean. It's soooo simple it's ridiculous.

I'll be cosplaying Oichi fromo Sengoku Basara, and I don't know how to make those pink straps on her back, or whatever they're called. English isn't my first language, sorry.
I thought of using interface, but I'm not sure if it will stiff enough. Any ideas? Thanks!

Woops thats what I meant, typo (though I think I should get a zipper foot too, I can sew zippers with out them but it sure aint fun and they dont look as good) and I'll have to practice it first before I get into sewing them on the outfits.

And /cgl/ color me impressed, this is a damn good help thread. Every anon and poster in general posting helpful stuff in here is awesome. You're really awesome.

I would case wire mesh inside along with interfacing.

Good luck with your sewing! I'm still pretty new to it all myself, so it's nice to be able to actually help someone rather than just giving vague theoretical advice. Zipper feet are magical after trying to sew without one, trust me.

You got a back reference picture?

From the looks of it some black fabric and white fabric, cut them together and pin carefully, sew in wire that's weak enough to bend but not so much it will break easily and that it can stand a bit of weight, two strips, one along each edge add some interfacing to prevent flop between the wire.
But that's just at a first glance, attaching them, well I cant tell since I cant see how theyre supposed to attach.

Thanks! This is the best image I could find.
Good thing is I have 3 or 4 months before the con so I have time to try a few methods until I get them right.

Seems to me you could attach them to a belt after sewing and just put that on under the top, cover it up right easy.

Yeah, I guess that's the best way since it will be easily covered. Thanks a lot for your help! This is my most detailed costume so far, so I'm a little lost :P

Welcome! And detailed ones can be scary sometimes, just take it a piece at a time and it will feel a bit simpler. Good luck!

I'm afraid that won't work cause of the sheer weight of the plateau heels. I wore those topless sandals before in an airtan studio and while they stick ok they only do so cause they are ultra light.

Anyone else any experience? perhaps with wig glue in general?

Any tips on getting your wig to not look like this, with all the flyaway hairs and stuff? It's my biggest pet peeve when it comes to wigs, and I'm using a long wig for the first time soon.

(No beef with this girl or anything, I just searched deviantart for Miku cosplayers and she was the first one with this problem I found).

Alright, time for a stupid question...I get how to make most of a pleated skirt. But the back has me stumped. I made one before, but followed a tutorial involving hooks-and-eyes and it turned out ill-fitting and hideous. Once you finish all the pleats, how do you shape the back and sew it so it fits your hips well but doesn't get all weird and lumpy? And how exactly do you line it up so the pleats aren't all asymmetrical down the back seam? What even is the best way to sew the back seam? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

    >>5567495
If you don't want them to sit unevenly around your butt you will probably have to either use a less thick material or sew the pleats down past your hips.

Perhaps clear straps? You could try glue but that could easily ruin the shoes.

    >>5567488
    WELL ANON GLAD YOU ASKED.
First, wig brush and comb, have it on you at all times.
Second you can get a silicone spray that you should spray your wig with especially if it's long. It will prevent it from tangling which will be lovely. It will still tangle yeah so keep brushing it, but it will help a lot.
Finally, hair spray! Spray yourself good once you've got it on, not to the point that youve got a hair helmet, but it should at least help control the fly aways. You wont be able to stop them completely, and if you can I wish to know your secrets, but those are some measures you can take against fly aways and tangled wigs.

Well, I understand that pleated skirts aren't meant to be form-fitting. I just mean it won't be lumpy down the center seam and will look like a typical waistband. The only skirt I made ended up with a weird sort of upside-down u shape at the back and was generally retarded-looking. I just haven't seen a tutorial that was clear about how to finish the back of a pleated skirt.

I was wondering if /cgl/ had any ideas on how to make Princess Bubblegum's crown. I know there is the basic fun foam and jewels but that always looks so uninspired.

Any suggestions on how to make PB's crown a little more interesting? Or at least not so flat and basic?

you could try making a mold of how you want it to look out of sculpey and then casting it in plastic.
