Tax write up for the con or himself? Most conventions are under a non-for-profit status and are tax exempt. As for the guests, usually the convention provides all travel, housing and expenses they need for the weekend so technically a guest shouldn't be paying for anything.I have no idea how that is for other types of conventions that are for-profit.
Yo OP, I don't think you get how it works...at all. The only person that could write off the expense of the VA is the CONVENTION, not the VA themselves.
