meh. D looks good, but not accurate. She overlooked a lot of beautiful details. Same can be said for Doris, though hers is even more bland. They're not gonna win anything in the WCS, but they did well by UK standards.

They were the only group that actually had a theatrical skit, any decent audio and a vague storyline and set so their skit was far superior to everyone else's. it was an easy win

She came on walking like she had a stick up her bum. She reminded me more of a clunky moving zombie, which I suppose suits the way the character was at the time but it was hardly graceful like they seemed to want.

She was a lot better then Lex however in terms acting, I shall give her that.

When you're waving your arms about like she and the slight prancing, I presume it was supposed to look graceful. She didn't look like she was possessed by a Vampire in that sense, but more like she was the walking dead which she was not.

Vampire Hunter D Vamps and girls are supposed to be beautiful and graceful, not clunky as fuck.

Fucking hell this is causing one hell of a shit storm isn't it?
Hardly surprising. Everyone is either saying their win was fixed, or they cheated or it's because of their reputations. Which its not. They deseerved to win. They were better than the other entrants, and the judges who I don't believe knew either of them personally or knew of their "reputations" were impartial.
Geez... I don't get why people are so fucking angry about it. They won. Lets be happy for them and that we have a decent representative at the WCS and move the fuck on shall we?

Sage because people are getting their panties in a twist over nothing and being butthurt about it.
    >> Anonymous 02/26/12(Sun)16:37 No.5540092
    >>5539452
Angry? If anything reaction is subdued, few people whining true but don't try to make it look like a big thing when the announcement was accepted with a bit of barely a whimper. There is only a couple of people posting back and forth.

They were the right winners but big fish on a small pond. People that don't like them are half heartedly stirring, people that do like them wish it was not a cheap victory.

    >> Anonymous 02/26/12(Sun)17:25 No.5540400

The costumes were mostly quite average to be honest. Nothing amazingly good, other than Lex and Sands who had really nicely constructed ones. Don't have any photos but there were videos linked in the Hyper Japan thread.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)04:30 No.5542759
Keep in mind that it's not just their costumes that are judged- skit and folios also count. I've seen WCS competitions won with average costumes but amazing skits and showmanship.

People being bitter and bitchy is why I avoid the fuck out of cosplay communities.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)11:49 No.5543204
    >>5542759
People are just bitchy 'cos they are jealous. I pretty much avoid entering comps these days because I can't be bothered with all the bitching.

I felt Lex and Sands deserved to win. They had the best one overall.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)12:32 No.5543285
    >>5543204
I feel like a lot of it is also due to the fact that the competition was just... Boring. Of course Lex and Sands are good, we all know this.
It's not the fact that they won that's the problem, I almost feel like it's more due to the fact that it was such a cheap win. Saying they "deserved" it feels a bit odd because there was so little competition. They just went there, won, and that was that.
That's no fault of their own obviously, nor is it a criticism. I just think the UK isn't very competitive yet other than on maybe a very local level, and especially around here where we're used to seeing tons of drama from other countries... The UK scene can be a bit bland at times.

Overall I'm pretty disappointed in the comps from HJ this weekend. Very few entrants, despite a few people I didn't recognise at all. It's good to see some people are still willing to try even though we have a few big names that just seem to be all anyone is interested in. However, there were so few entrants that it hardly seemed worth watching.

Totally agree, I was really hoping there'd be at least one other team that gave them some competition. I can't help thinking if it had been at a different event, and possibly if it was being organised by someone other than Emily, there would have been more interest/competition, plus it's the first year for WCS I think once people have a better idea of what's expected/wanted for it more people will go for it

I liked their skit, more interesting than what we normally end up with here, could have done with a little polish but I'm guessing they haven't had that much chance to practice together, looking forward to seeing what they do for japan
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)13:07 No.5543339
    >>5543327
The Monster Hunter team surprised me, although they definitely weren't competition. At least they tried to do something new, the others were all quite standard, although I assume since they didn't place others had better costumes up close. Hard to tell on stage.

Definitely the wrong event though. I can see why Emily wants the event, but HJ just doesn't haven't the pull yet to actually bring competitors to it, and they can't rely on the competition to nullify previous bad reputation.

Next year will be interesting, that's for sure.

You've raised a very good point. I think a lot of the UK 'big names' as it were are aiming for events like Amecon where the EC is holding its qualies. Not because the WCS doesn't hold any interest for them more because people had already planned ahead. I know one person who would have loved to have gone for WCS but had already planned to enter EC. They didn't want to change their plans as the costume build they are doing is quite time consuming.

I think the Team element for WCS did have probs for a few as most couldn't sort out a partner. Most are used to entering comps on their own.

I think next year will see more taking an interest in the WCS.

I am interested to see what Lex and Sands do choose to do for the final.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)13:26 No.5543371
    >>5543364
I hadn't even thought about EC in relation to WCS, so you're definitely onto something there.

I've said in another thread, but I do feel sorry for ECG. WCS being the first prize has just made it go completely under the radar. No one has even mentioned the solo ECG entries on Sunday yet!
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)13:34 No.5543389
Been in the scene a long time, won a handful of competitions at various UK cons but would only be interested in giving EC a try but not a big fan of the performance side. Only so much one person on stage can do.
Not everyone in this hobby is interested in going to Japan and the drama these things create puts me off.

I absolutely loved the Monster Hunter team, the weapons just looked really amazing and from what i saw their costumes were well put together though i only saw them from the crowd and not up close. Its just their performance that really bought them down. I think if they'd been able to bump that up a few levels they could of been a serious competition. Does anyone know who those two were? I don't recognize either of them.

I'm fairly sure the monster hunter team were only in for ECG and I think it's the first time they've done anything even vaguely that ambitious, those weapons were fantastic, but it's good to see some "new blood" at least trying and their skit idea was interesting just needed a bit more work
