I love this group so no complaints from me. I just hope that their comedy style can transition nicely to the dramatic skits necessary.

I heard from a staffer who was security at WCS that it was terrible. People missing their times, dropping out last minute, running over their times, unrehearsed, groups falling apart, etc. Plust not nearly as many people came as Katsucon was expecting.

I only caught the second half of the performances but those two had the best skit by FAR. Definitely excited for them.
for the record. Words cannot describe my embarrassment when I first sat down and Evanescence started playing in the first skit I saw, after I'd had to convince my buddies to come by saying how much better WCS masqs are supposed to be compared to regular masqs. what the hell guys.

WCS isn't an automatic OMG AWESOME SKIT competition. It actually takes a lot more work and enginuity to come up with a skit that works and is entertaining with just 2 people. No ninjas and only 2:30 to do it, not to mention a weight limit on props.

That said I think this team is an awesome pick. They had an interesting skit with well planned props, and were so excited to win. You really can't say anything bad about them.

And to my knowledge after judging only one group actually dropped, and there wasn't much drama in the way of people missing spots or being late.

Also anyone who says they worked security for WCS is a joke, because there was none. Anyone who wanted in the green room only had to walk in...
    >> LittleJelloSalad !YG.DdnIWg6 02/23/12(Thu)23:00 No.5530643
I was really torn between these two and the Ah!My Goddess group. While the A!MG group definitely had it with construction and detail, these two won me over with the mirror. I thought that was wonderfully creepy and definitely played on the darker side of Princess Tutu, and was a total throw back to the actual Swan Lake performance.

She made a special speech about how much help she got from past contestants, and that someone hinted to her that there were no irons in the hotels in Japan.

She brought a travel iron and all the other teams head and came to their room to use the iron, and it helped them make friends... even despite language barriers.

    It was cute.

If i had anything bad to say about the skit was that they spent so much time with their backs turned looking at the box. If they take this skit to Japan I would hope that try figure out a solution to that, perhaps looking sideways at the box instead of head on...

Its hard to see facial expressions and emotions with their backs to you. PS. In japan judging critera is like 5 points (out of 20 or something) for emotions conveyed on stage.

While I agree that US judges focus on craftwork and dramatic (rather than entertaining) skits - which is why we never win - I think you are being way to harsh on the girls.

Not every team that ever wins WCS is model status, most teams are average looking at best, with average costumes and a really entertaining skit.

Get off your high horse, also just because a girl doesn't have the ideal body type doesn't mean she has a weight problem.

Thank you... you made my mind up for me
When you started to ignore me
Do you see a single tear
    It isn't gonna happen here
At least not today, not today, not today

    [Chorus]

If you're over me, I'm already over you
If it's all been done, what is left to do
How can you hang up if the line is dead
If you wanna walk, I'm a step ahead
If you're moving on, I'm already gone

    >You cannot ignore the cosplayer and simply judge them on the clothes they wear.
Yes you can, are you out of your fucking mind?

Just because someone is of a bigger weight or body type does not mean that they can't dress to look good. And if you are to look at cosplay on the grounds of making a good costume, and said larger person makes a great costume that even compliments their body type, but you judge them negatively because they're bigger, then shame on you for even thinking it's not okay for them to be the way they are.

There is nothing wrong with someone of any weight making a costume that compliments them and looks good as a costume. If you're some sort of fat-ophobe, that's your problem and you NEED to keep that to yourself.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)08:56 No.5531658
I haven't seen the skit but I've seen most of the contestants in photos and I have a question for you, US citizens.
Is the skit really that important in your preliminaries? Because there were some much, much, much better costumes than those two and I was really surprised that they won.
Where I live the costume is the most important thing and even if the skit plays a part, the thing that really matter is the costume in itself. Doesn't it work like that for you too?

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, since most of our contestants end up in the middle of the rankings and most of them are ugly despite being great seamstresses. I'm just... curious.

The way the judging process went was having an emphasis on both costume and performance. Japan doesn't give two shits about craftsmanship out there, but we do in the US, so we wanted to be able to send someone out there with great costumes paired with an amazing performance. There were a lot of skits at the prelims that would have easily won something in a masquerade, and this prelim was one of the best events I had a pleasure of attending, everyone brought their A game.

Here the skit is definitely the most important element. At WCS in Japan, they don't care as much as craftsmanship and don't even look at your costumes up close. It all comes down to how entertaining your skit is and what you look like on stage.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)09:36 No.5531695
    >>5531658

No, the skit is about 80% of what gets you chosen. The craftmanship part is mostly about making sure that you legitimently made your own costume.

The ideal winner would have both an awesome costume and an awesome skit, but quite honestly in USA you could win in a school fuku, just as long as your skit evoked some sort of emotion.
    >> Soni !!BvH0j6gtcGI 02/24/12(Fri)09:41 No.5531698
    >>5531695
Eh, not necessarily. The thing about placing an emphasis on craft and performance is that if you have a costume that isn't dynamic on the stage, it's not going to have the same wow factor. I know that if I saw a fuku on stage with a great skit, I would still probably be underwhelmed due to the costume, which is why trying to find a happy medium between craft and performance is so tricky. But that's just my personal opinion. Luckily, everyone brought costumes that worked well for the stage at Katsu.

Right but if you had to pick between 20 yards of chiffon and 1500 swarovski crystals who did a glorified walk on, versus a school fuku or simple kimono (like watanuki last year) with a very thoughtful and emotional skit, the plane shit would win out.

That is just how it is here. Costumes alone I bet the one Trinity Blood group would win, but when you consider the skit, 2 of the 3 top groups had rather underwhelming costumes. (Sorry but the Beldandy was just awesome, the tutu and utena were sorta bland - im sure they were sewn amazingly).

I doubt that. The people who enter WCS are cosplayers who want attention and think being in WCS will give them said fame. Getting a plane ride to Tokyo isn't that big of a deal.

    >>5531240
You make the strange assumption that disliking how fat people look in cosplay is something that only I share. This is the natural reaction. It has nothing to do with whatever silly rationalizations you want to dream up.

    >>5531320
    That never happened.

    >>5531627
It is a very limiting mindset as a cosplayer not to understand that how much the way you look plays an important part of cosplay. It has nothing to do with hating fat people or whatever civil rights propaganda you wish to create, it's a simple fact of cosplay. Cosplayers in Asia understand this, which is why they are admired. Unfortunately, too many Western cosplayers are stuck inside a philosophy that you can ignore the way you look, do anything you wish, and people will still pat you on the back and pretend you did a great job because everyone's a winner and nobody can be mean.

Cosplay is a fantasy of human beauty as it pertains to anime and manga. Not a sewing circle.

    >>5531689
Skill and craftsmanship okay to have as criteria, but the person also needs to look impressive as well. And ignoring the virtues upheld from a Japanese standpoint for a Japanese contest in favor of a US standpoint of sewing elitism is a sure-fire way to ensure the contestants do not win. There is a reason the Asian cosplay community values beauty in cosplay so much, and they aren't wrong.

I like to call these preliminaries as WCS: Tango. Its just easier to do a dancing skit with two people as opposed to a fighting skit. I personally would LOVE to see a fighting skit with people who are training in some sort of martial arts or stage fighting to come out and do a performance. Lord knows I lovelovelove the fighting stuff the Koreans like to do, but we can't really do much if there is such a limited pool of fighters trying out for WCS in the US.

I can't believe I'm going to reply to you, but I just want to make one thing very clear.

When we are looking for a representative for the US for the WCS, we are looking for someone who REPRESENTS what US cosplay is like. The World Cosplay Summit is exactly that, a Summit. It's to bring different perspectives of the cosplay culture from different countries together to share what they do for their country and show it to the Japanese audience. The only criteria we have that accommodates the Japanese audience is that it has to be understood by them. That's it. Everything else is based off of US criteria, emphasis on performance and craftsmanship. Other countries place their emphasis more on craftsmanship, and others on performance, but that is how they do it in their countries. That's it.

Perhaps it is a bit elitist. But then again, this is supposed to be an "elite" international competition. So I don't think it's unwarranted. If we were talking about hall cosplay then sure, whatever floats the person's boat. As enormous a boat as it may be.

This is not abstract artwork here. This is cosplay. And yes, fat people do not look good in cosplay. I'm sorry if this upsets you or if you feel I'm being mean to your friend, but there are certain basic truths to cosplay and this one of them.

    >>5531786
One of us definately has a piss poor attitude. :P

But in any case, while I may not know what it's like to go to WCS, I do have a firm understanding of the tenants of cosplay and what is admired in it. And contrary to what you may think, the admiration of beauty in cosplay is not solely an Asian thing. People in America love it just as much as any Asian person does. It simply isn't pursued to the same degree because of the popular 'everyone's a winner' Western mentality which encourages all people to participate without regards to one's appearance or limitations. Which, in turn, produces an overwhelming amount of bad cosplays. I don't believe this is something to be proud of and I don't think it's wrong to understand how important physical aesthetics are in cosplay. To ignore that is ignorance.

    >>5531797
Perhaps her weight fluctuates or perhaps she just looks fatter in the other dress. Regardless, the cosplay entered into WCS is not a flattering look.

    Judging Criteria
Points are award based on three major criteria. A fourth bonus criteria was added in 2010.
    1. Performance (100 points) - Production of performance, creativity of elements and entertainment.
conception/creativity of the skit (30 points)
    preparation (20 points)
    performing skills (20 points)
    entertainment (30 points)
    2. Costumes (100 points) - Workmanship, how faithful the costumes are to the original characters
    3. Faithfulness to Story (50 points) - How faithful the performance is to the story of the original work and characters
The Bonus Criteria is a chance for up to 50 points to be added or deducted from each performance.
    Positive points (10 points each):
    WOW factor
    Costume Choice for stage
    Stage props
    General audience catering
    Portfolio
    Negative points (10 points each):
    Costume dysfunction on stage
    Poor stage use
    Audio quality
    Emotion visibility
    Attitude

Is this what you use? Sometimes contests like this seem really arbitrary, like they looked nice and had a blinking light... so they win. (not to discount the winners, just curious if you all used this)

Bunny Mage, I hope I never meet you. I hope that no one ever does, because I'm sure you'd suck the fun out of anything you were involved in. Here's to hoping that no one ever shares with you the experience of what makes this community so special.

You understand nothing about this hobby and why people do it to begin with. Every time I wear a cosplay and I go out into the convention area, I'm going out there to spend time with friends, meet other people who like things I like, and hope that people cosplay from stuff I like because I see that other people share a love for something and want to bring life to it. That's why cosplay started, that's why people even thought about fucking dressing up in the first place. Yes many people choose to put in the effort to look as good as they can be but that doesn't fucking matter when we're all here to share our love of something.

If there is anything in this community that we don't need it's a person with an attitude like yours who has clearly proven that only those who have conformed to an ideal of beauty can be a part of and that those who do not should be cast out of the circle. Cosplay is not survival of the pretty. And it never will be that as long as people remember why they do it. For the love of the shows and games and comics they enjoy reading, and to share that love with others. That's why I cosplay. That's why my friends cosplay. And that's how I hope every other person I meet cosplays.

So please, go on in thinking that only pretty people should be privileged with an experience that is about being the heart and soul of a nation and how we enjoy a hobby. I hope one day I make it that far, just to prove you wrong and show people like you why we do this.

It's a legitimate criticism for a skit. If the ballet is supposed to be showcased and it's mediocre, then that's a problem.

If you look at the prior WCS winners you will see two things. One.. that Japan likes to vote for itself a lot. TWO, that the people who win are often not paragons of beauty. In fact sometimes they are even average looking guys.

Despite your empassioned reaction, I don't see any points you're attempting to make that refutes anything I've said. Aesthetic beauty is a big part of cosplay. I'm sorry if this upsets you but I don't see how you could with any credibility say this isn't true.

Also, you're confusing high levels of competition with social gathering. Obviously, if all you want to do is roam the halls and hang out with friends then it doesn't matter what or how you cosplay. But if you want to be seen as a great cosplayer and be admired for what you do then your choices are either to care about your physical appearance or only choose cosplays where your body is completely covered. My opinion is that too many cosplayers in the west adopt an unflattering "I don't care" policy concerning their hobby they involve themselves in and it's not something to be proud of. No matter what "fun" you set out to have you should always strive to be the best you can be. Not thrive on mediocrity and lash out at anyone who dares say the truth.

    >>5532415
So you're claiming Japan only wins because of in-voting? That's a scandal I've never yet heard before. But if an "average-looking" person managed to win at one point then congratulations to them. I'm not so sure that's a handicap one would want to rely on though.

    >>5532428
From what I understand the policies surrounding the contest have changed a lot throughout the years. It's no longer the predetermined reality show it was oriignally.

I do not want to add fuel to the fire, but if you look at the last WCS winners over the past few years, most of them were average looking. most of the contestants are average looking, anyway! Even Japanese ones, so I don't see the point of your argument.
That being said, those two girls aren't ugly at all, and even though I'm not a fan of their skit/costume, I doubt many people would find them "ugly" or "fat".

I don't know, I haven't looked at all the entrees. Maybe it's true that the Princess Tutu was the best. But if every US team had at least one overweight member then I think that speaks a lot about cosplay in this country.

    >>5532480
Although you use a lot of terms like "proof" and "research" I am not seeing anything of the sort outside of childish name-calling and groundless opinions. Needless to say, if you are going to accuse Japan of cheating then you're going to have to provide a little more evidence then snarky remarks and a pompous attitude problem.

    >>5532481

No one accused them of 'cheating'. They like to vote for themselves a lot because they often used to place, if not win. That is a fact. It's not cheating however, it's just a bit shady.

Looking at the WCS info, it appears all judges are Japanese guests. So you're saying anytime a judge votes for a Japanese team it's because of a bias?

What about when non-Japanese teams win? Did they accidentally vote for the wrong person?
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)14:48 No.5532525
Pfft. I remember the year a Code Geass yaoi skit won one of the smaller awards, the team that did it was one of the Japanese teams. The skit itself was pretty cool in that the dramatic battle scene and then exploding roses for blood was creative, but they also pushed each other to the stage floor and did fanservice.

I honestly believe if it hadn't been a Japanese team, they wouldn't have gotten that award due to the BL content.

Brazil invests the most money in TV Aichi's WCS competition and Italy provides the airlines that most of the teams use. This is why Brazil and Italy (and Japan) almost always place. Of course they are going to give the prizes to the teams that provide the most money and sponsors.

Yeah, that's the way it works in Russia. Of course their costumes look amazing. It's essentially done the same way as professional movies. You got your wig expert, your sewing expert, your prop expert, and then experts of little details like beading or screenprinting, or jewelry making.

It's impressive but less impressive when you realize that.

Though it's not against the rules that family and friends can help you make them, it's just "preferable" that the contestants make them themselves.
