Yeah I've seen this. It's not only Sakura con that they are protesting.

The reason behind the protest, is that the conventions are hiring non-union staff. By staff I mean the people that go around cleaning the bathrooms, taking care of the trash, doing general cleaning, helping set things up before & after the con, etc etc. I think they've also been protesting Emerald City Comic Con, and PAX Prime for the same reasons.

There was a union protest at colossalcon too this year; I guess they were made that the hotel wasn't using unions for the convention center add on.

Jeeze, this has gotten people confused. Yes, this was real, there were people protesting outside the WSCTC during the Sakura-Con general meeting. As I understand, the dispute involves not the convention specifically, but that fact that the company who handles some of the staging during the convention (DWA Trade Show & Exposition Services according to the flyers) does not follow some standards set by the local carpenters union (who's members are employed at DWA).

The problem is, as far as I know, is that Sakura-Con has absolutly no control over who is hired to do some of the staging. Sakura-Con is held at the WSCTC, which means we hire WSCTC to handle some staging. WSCTC in turn contracts with DWA. This is pretty standard among convention and trade show centers. The convention has to hire the convention center, who contracts jobs out to a third party.

Ergo, protesting ANY of the conventions or trade shows held at the WSCTC makes little sense when it's the WSCTC who actually makes the contracts with the staging companies. And guess who has control over that? These guys: http://www.wsctc.com/about_us/board.aspx
And guess who appoints them: The State Governor. If they actually cared they'ed protest in Olympia. Not outside of an anime convention.

unfortunately the unions demand that you only let their workers do the construction and tear down. you can't even bring in your own large items. you're supposed to let the union workers do that. and yes, they charge money for all of that shit. it's one of the many things companies hate about convention centers

lmao my dad works as a mediator between unions and contractors. When I mentioned wanting to go into carpentry, he said the carpenters union are a bag of dicks. They're pretty much the most entitled union ever, and completely fuck over contracts with other unions because OMG YOU'RE PAINTING ON WOOD, THAT SHOULD BE CARPENTER JOBS NOT PAINTER JOBS and crap like that.

Don't you guys remember the huge clusterfuck at AX (I think it was) a year to two back when all the vendors realized that they had to pay union labor to transport their merchandise from the loading dock to their booth at some exorbitant price and that price wasn't included in the booth space?

Forgive me if I'm remembering the details wrong, but I remember vendors pulling out and contract disputes.

Those assholes taking dues out of your paycheck so they can operate and maintain union halls, conduct contract negotiations, print newsletters to let you know what's going on within the union, hire staff for taking care of employee concerns and union management, hold union member votes and meetings, and keep tabs on company violations of contracts!

Seriously guys, if you don't like a specific union because their entitled asshats like the carpenters union mentioned, then attack that specific union. I don't care for corruption, entitlement, and dipshittery within union ranks, but I'd rather be part of one than not.
If you don't like unions and don't want to be part of one, don't work in a union job.
