No pics but I've certainly got stories from Kum 09. The year the security guards had to be told to start handing out compliments to the guests.

Do tell. This thread is now about security guards, regardless of their emotional state.

To me the funniest part about the whole situation was they blocked off this area that lead to the escalators, and that had bathrooms in it. For no reason, it was like they were holding fort of their own little stretch of land like "NO YOUVE TAKEN THE HOTEL BUT YOU WONT HAVE THIS HALLWAY."

But you could get out of the area the escalators went to by going that way, you just had to walk past them, you just couldnt get in. They were being pretty rude to any and all con guests that had to walk by them to get out of that area from the escalators too. I cant recall if it was snide comments or just mean looks.

Anyways so I was helping my friend for her skit, she was big sister from bio shock and just needed me in a girly kiddy dress to be creepy onstage for her, so I did. walking back I'm just wearing what was actually a pretty normal dress and outfit, I didnt look to out of the norm. Then I hear from the security guards behind me as I pass through the 'restricted' area on my way back to my room "Nice costume you look really great". I turn around and give them a 'wut?' look and they smile awkwardly. I stick around for a minute and realize they were saying the exact same thing to all the guests that passed by them, in costume or not. I think it was safe to assume they were told to clean up their attitude, but it was funny to watch the bewildered look on the attendees face when they heard nice words coming from them for once.

There was also the time they wouldnt let me back in the hotel, or let me get to my artist alley booth, other encounters, it was a bad con for security.

...but why? That just seems awful! I'm sorry you had to go through that but would you share your other stories?

The only security story I have is about getting lost and trying to find my way back to the hotel and this lady having a bitch fit at me for wandering around.

Oh other people had it worse, my stories were mild.

The not letting me back in the hotel thing was on the morning of day one. Apprently they had been told let no one in the hotel unless they had passed through registration (they failed to mention that if the attendees were there on day 0 and had a badge already then it didnt really matter, or if they were hotel guests)

I have a tradition of going to survey the line in the morning. So I got out there to check it out said hi to the con attendees dressed as Peach, gave some hugs, posed for pictures, it was fun. I decide it time to head back in at that point only to be stopped by a security guard. I say I was just going back in and she says "You cant go back in till youve passed through that whole line." and she points to the reg line.

I laugh and hold up my badge and say "Oh no I did the line yesterday, but I'm a hotel guest I'd like to go back to my room." and I even bring out my hotel card key from my wallet in my purse.

She tells me "Doesnt matter, you cant go in till you go through the line again then."

"But I already have my badge...."

"You cant come in the hotel miss, not till you go through that line."

I'm getting pretty angry by that point, and she also accuses my badge of being fake since it's not one of the three standard colors (it was an AA badge), but then con staff wanders over see's my badge, tells me of course I can go in. The security guard is not happy about this and opens her mouth to protest. The con staff raises her own staff badge and tells the security guard I'm allowed in and the guard huffs. The staff member also tells me it would be wise to not wander outside again since the guards werent quiet getting the message right. I thank her for helping me and dont go outside until reg line is gone.

I was there kcon 2009 and 2010. There wasn't much that could be done about the hotel security guards. They played by their own rules. At least 2010 they backed off a bit.

I recall, it was a bad bad year.

I didnt end up going in 2010, since I hated that hotel so much and I didnt want to deal with that hotel staff again.

Good call, that hotel sucked anyways. I was told 2011 was better, so I might end up going this year.

2011 wasnt bad, had some major problems but I enjoyed it more than 09.

Oh another security story. So recall how I talked about the 'restricted area' and how it had bathrooms, I believe I read this one on the forums afterwords when we were all having a bitch fest about the con security.

Some one was acting as legal guardian for the weekend for an underage friend, or little sibling of a friend of theirs, I'm not sure which. Said child had to use the restroom. Well those restricted bathrooms were really the only bathrooms in the lobby area at all. At first we werent allowed to use them but then something got said and they opened them up to the con guests.

So of age brings their minor to use the restroom, I believe they were different genders as the over one had to wait outside the bathroom, only to be berated by the security that he cant stay there if hes not using the restroom and has to be corralled back to the main lobby area. The guest tries to explain he has to stay with the minor at all times and the minor is in the rest room. The security gets angry says it doesnt matter. They start fighting till staff has to come over again and says the under age and guardian rule overrides the weird restricted area thing the security has going on, and allows the guardian to wait till the minors done with their business before immediately vacating the area.

I really wish I knew why they didnt want any one in that hallway. There really was no reason and I'm sure the con guests would have liked easier access to those bathrooms.

Now I'm wondering what the worse stories are as those are pretty annoying! Like why would they close off bathrooms? That just seems silly to me. It seems they were angry and did what they wanted which is not okay. I'm sorry you had to go through that!

I think the largest problem with that hallway was people would end up standing in it for way too long and the hotel did not like that one bit. If I had to guess why, it would be due to the fire code. There was a limit on how many people could be in the game room in 2010 due to that.

I'm trying to recall the really bad ones I've heard, I know there were supposed to be a few cases of down right harassment.

    >>5480077
Yeah but they cleared hat hallway out right quick, I dont think it was open past noon on the first day. I thought it was fire code too but it was such a large hallway, I mean I use the term hallway relatively it was more apart of the lobby than anything else, either way the fact that they were limiting people from the bathrooms was silly. The whole venue was silly, they had to count how many people were downstairs because of fire code and only let a few people in at a time. If I recall the hotel wasnt expecting our numbers and exaggerated the amount of people they could handle. Also double booked us with a wedding.

Way too small indeed. How was the space at the current place?
