25 KB Korean Education Thread Korea Bro 02/08/12(Wed)12:52 No.5471119
It has come to my attention that many seagulls are indeed interested in Korean culture beyond the K-Pop boybands and I wish to respect that sentiment.

Therefore I propose this thread: The Korean Education thread.

Any questions about the Korean language from basic grammar to pronunciation, or simple translation, I will be happy to assist. If you have any questions about Korea itself I will not claim to be an expert, not being in the motherland for that long, but I will utilize the tools given to me to answer your questions.

How do I say 'Applejack is best pone' in Korean?
    >> Korea Bro 02/08/12(Wed)12:54 No.5471123
    >>5471120
    "애플잭이 최고의 포니다."

I took the liberty to just use the word "pony" and put it in Korean due to the fact that the Korean word for "pony" doesn't have the same cute ring to it.

please don't help the koreeboos be even more annoying.
they won't have the dedication to actually learn teh language.

Then I'll be able to help those who really want to learn the language. I know how hard it is to learn Korean especially from a western standpoint, and I would be really honored to help whoever is having trouble.

Besides, foreigners who try to speak Korean are mostly severely cute.

So you're just sharking vulnerable foreigners? Tch.

That is one of the great things about learning foreign languages though, even if I make a lot of mistakes, German guys don't mind because my 'franzözische Aussprache so hübsch ist'

I would tell you to really work on the vocab, since in any language really, a basic understanding on how the words look and sound like can take you a long way. Pronunciation is also very important, but also a timely process. Grammar tends to be the exact opposite of other languages, but that comes in a little bit later.

The best way of learning Korean would be to actually encounter it a lot. I would recommend dramas or other things of the like and surround yourself in how basic structure works. Subs are a must of course.

    >>5471169
On the contrary; I do respect this board, and I don't think this is an off-topic thread. I believe Korean is a significant interest in this board with the songs and what not, and I see an increasing trend of Korean songs and pop culture finding their way into cons etc. I think actually teaching people how the language goes would benefit them in many ways, and perhaps help them in the future as well.

Or, at least I think its more relevant than say, a tripfag thread. I think you actually learn something here

and what's the difference between 내/니 and 나의/너의

the structure is right, but some of the words are missing some things, but I can get the gist of the argument pretty well. How long have you been practicing?

    >>5471776
ok so 저/나/너 and 제가/내가/니가 has different uses depending on what the subject (in this case "I" and "you") is doing or did. 제가/내가 representing "I" and 니가 representing "you." When the subject is doing something or did some thing, the term "가" tends to follow it for example:

I pushed him off the bridge
    제/내가 그를 다리 넘어로 밀었어요.

    Didn't you eat my cookies?
니가 내 쿠키를 다 먹지 않았니?

Also when you're accusing someone or admitting to something, the term "가" typically comes afterwards.

Simply put, if a verb comes after the subject, "가" comes in after.

Also there isn't a functional difference between 내/니 and 나의/너의. They're interchangeable, but 나의/너의 seems to be a more formal way of saying things.

OP, what advice would you give to an English girl who is studying the language.

I'm having trouble with the accent. I find Korean to be rather flat in tone, but when I attempt to imitate it, it comes out wrong. Any advice on inflection and pitch?
    >> JillyBean !!JNfSKsTtdUC 02/08/12(Wed)16:22 No.5471819
So I've got a question, might seem silly.
I've recently made a friend in my english class with a Korean girl whose recently moved here, really sweet girl.

I was wondering, good ideas to make her feel welcomed here, or something that she can relate to from home? I was thinking of going to the asian food market and getting some ingredients for a Korean meal. I'm already taking her around too, showing the sights.

thankfully pitch is not crucial to the Korean language, You might sound weird, but it won't change the meaning of the word entirely, maybe the way the sentence flows if that.

When it comes to pronunciation, I really don't know how I can tell you this, but listening and practicing constantly should help. I know this is the most generic advice I can give someone, but if you need some words that would like me to pronounce, I shall do so in a speedy manner later today.

    >>5471819
Not a silly question at all. I think she'll be very grateful. It depends on the place you live. If there is an Asian market that sells Korean food or if you could make some, that would be great. If your point is to welcome, those small acts of kindness should go a long way.

But you don't really have to go out of your way to take her to "authentic Korean places", especially if she just got here: she already knows those places. Take her shopping, or maybe to some exotic place that Korea can't replicate.

    About two years ago I tried my best to learn on my own, but due to laziness, job, etc., I stopped. I learned how to read and write quickly, the tiniest amounts of grammar, and a few key phrases but that's about it. Any studying I've done since has been in the form of watching Music Bank, MuCore, Inkigayo and M!CD every week. ;~;

Thank you! Yeah I really just want to make her welcome, I've done the exchange student three times (nothing longer than 3 months however) so I'm familier to the feeling of new place and way different culture. We have a good asian market so I'll probably make her a Korean dinner. And yeah I'm showing her the things that make Portland Unique like Powells and Voodoo.

I'm sure she'll enjoy that. it doesn't take much to make up feel "welcome." Just be friendly and stuff

My fellow korea-lovers, I present to you a concise epilogue of the facts surrounding Korea's late Glorious Leader. Any fan of this marvellous country should know this kind of basic knowledge, and I hope that by reading this you can transfer yourself into the heart of the Korean ideology.

The Glorious Leader was surely one of the greatest and most influential people of the 21st century, nay, of the 2nd millinium. With his ability to control the weather at will, and his superior tastes in fashion, film, and music (including his six operas) that set an example for trends across the world, the Glorious Leader was surely a unique character and a divine hero.

His astonishing birth, heralded by birdsong, the appearance of a new star and double rainbows, was only surpassed by the event of his death, at which the skies turned deep dark red, and an ice lake cracked so hard to make the ground tremble.

Also here's a link to a song by the reknown "K-pop band" KPA State Merited Choir, "No Motherland Without You
