I'm pretty sure most larger cons profit to some extent or another. I know Fanime brings San Jose a nice amount each year.
    >> Anonymous 02/04/12(Sat)04:06 No.5452547
AX 2010 was the year of the Latanzio fiasco. The retard has stepped down since then and the con is much better for it.

Besides, a con's worth isn't measured in it's profits margins, but in how much FUN it is to go to it. BlizzCon is a fucking awesome con but it loses money each year, and Blizzard could give a fuck.

    >Anime Expo is reporting a profit of roughly US$100,000 for the 2011 event, partially offsetting the previous year's loss.

So 2010 sucked but the next year was back to being ok. No big deal.

I fail to see the drama.

There really is none except for the fact that it was that dumbass Latanzio was in charge for that year and fucked all the shit up for 2010.

So... what? They did bad the year they had the shitty CEO and did better the year without him. What shit are you trying to start exactly?

Shit, 2010 had May'n/Megumi and MELL for concerts (plus AKB48 if you are into them)

    I loved 2010.

Yeah, except Blizzard has products to promote.
That money lost? Think of it as Advertising.

And that shit has paid off something fierce.

Cons need to profit to some extent so they can continue to grow. They need to at least break even so they can continue to be held. A con that continues to bleed money is going to disappear, it's never a good thing for them to lose cash.

Just in case there's people who aren't familiar with the 2010 fiasco, specifically pertaining to the former ceo:

    http://project760.webs.com/apps/forums/topics/show/1985682-anime-expo-situation-as-seen-by-silenced-
    staff-members

    >3) Spending over $8000 on a pair of plane tickets to Japan to meet Japanese contacts.
    >3a) - Lattanzio cited in a statement that as a CEO he deserved perks. While he went through the Board of Directors channel to get these plane tickets approved, as a non profit organization, there is very little money to spend on such perks, furthermore, there is no direct contractual evidence that he or Kim Groomes "deserve" these perks.
    >3c) - No evidence or proof that Lattanzio met these contacts.
    >11) Lack of traceability from $380,000 in profits from last year's AX [2009].

Putting two and two together, along with the rest of the list, it really wasn't a surprise that ax2010 bombed the way it did. CEO was a lying thieving douche.
    >> Anonymous 02/04/12(Sat)12:53 No.5453552
The thing is even if 2011 was better (and I'm glad it was), the fact of matter is that AX loss too much money in the previous year and is now in debt. Even if AX is improving now, the question is how it'll be able to pay off its debt despite posting profits in 2011.
    >> Anonymous 02/04/12(Sat)13:00 No.5453579
    >>5453552
Just because they're in debt, doesn't mean they have to pay it back as soon as possible. 2010 was the first and only year since it's inception that they actually loss attendees and it still remains the juggernaut of anime conventions in the US. With level-headed and fiscally responsible staff, it'll continue to bring in profits and will eventually be able to pay back the debt, though it might take a few years to do so.

They better bring some high-quality guests and shorten up that reg line if AX wants the chance to repay those debts within two years
    >> Anonymous 02/04/12(Sat)13:51 No.5453718
    >>5453695
Oh they could raise the registration rates.
    >> Anonymous 02/04/12(Sat)14:08 No.5453757
    >>5453718
The article said that they want to keep reg rates the same
But that's just reg rates, they can raise everything across the board especially if some big-name guest comes over

Or find a different business model

Example: Pass certain costs to the congoer. Shuttle passes used to be free if you had an AX badge, or unofficially if you were just seen in cosplay. Simply require everyone pay a buck one-way would help mitigate some of the costs and keep the congestion down (since there's some people that'd save some cash by walking to-from the hotels)

If you figure those shuttles move around at least a thousand people a day, you can see over a four day weekend how that'll add up. It'd bring costs down and it makes things less complicated when the time actually comes to plan this out. It's easier to just charge a buck than to figure out the logistics of trying to assure who-gets-what.

AX staff can be hit or miss, and when they miss it's when they over plan and make something too complicated or rule-heavy. Follow the KISS principle
    >> Maguma !ftEuMagUmA 02/04/12(Sat)14:27 No.5453798
    >>5453771
Oh the KISS method. And honestly that would be fine, or even better they could re honor the AX 09 rule that they changed mid con which was, if you had a hotel key from one of the hotels that was on your shuttle route, or got the bus passes for booking in the hotel blocks, you'd get on for free. And if you didn't have that, then yeah, pay a dollar. What's a dollar worth to you?

Bullshit advice from tripfags. Hopefully none of you get to run a con never.
