I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that if the shot was really really beautiful, then I might not mind using a graveyard as a location as much. They usually have a great atmosphere.

    >> Anonymous 02/02/12(Thu)22:54 No.5446990
    >>5446965
of course not, no one's going to walk into your set and get upset because you're on their son's grave or something. there's nothing sacred about a set. if you're going to try to be dark or edgy you should do it at your own expense, not in front of people making an ass out of yourself (and any other cosplayer)

like others have said the idea of shooting in a graveyard can be cool but for christs sake dont be an smug weeaboo idiot

Well that doesn't offend me personally but you never know with some people. i think some people have a kneejerk reaction to graveyard+cosplay, but in that example i really dont think it's anywhere near as harmful as..you know, dancing in shitty wigs on top of someone's grave. As a general rule, don't do anything in cosplay that you wouldn't do out of it.

Graveyards can have beautiful architecture and while I personally wouldn't stand in the graveyard itself, I wouldn't mind having it in the backdrop. I think as long as people are respectful of the grave sites themselves and conduct themselves in an inoffensive manner, it's fine.

What always gets me though is when people do stuff like the girl in pic related and then act totally and completely surprised when they get backlash for it.

What about historical sites? I live near Brookgreen Gardens (a beautiful sculpture garden) and Atalaya (a castle-like structure, eerie even on summer days). Would it be horribly disrespectful to go there in costume for a photoshoot?
    >> Anonymous 02/03/12(Fri)00:09 No.5447272
    >>5447193
I think that no matter if it's a historical site, a graveyard, or gardens, you should always ask permission from the staff to make sure they're alright with you showing up in costume taking photographs. Come in advance, let them know exactly what day and time you intend to be shooting, and all of that jazz too. The more professional you seem, the better your chances might be, as opposed to just coming off like a gaggle of teenagers with nothing to do with themselves.
    >> Anonymous 02/03/12(Fri)00:12 No.5447287
Just like anything, there's a right and a wrong way to do it. Be quiet, be respectful, take a few beautiful photos. If that's the case, then in my book it's fine. I mean, they shoot movie/tv show scenes in graveyards, don't they?

    OP's pic is disgraceful, however.
    >> Anonymous 02/03/12(Fri)00:19 No.5447312
This is disgraceful regardless of whether or not they're in a graveyard, I'm so embarrassed for these people.

I don't really care about being respectful in a graveyard, but I do think it's important to be respectful of the other people who go there. Don't make a mess, don't fuck things up, and don't be an obnoxious douchebag if there are other people doing things that you'll be interrupting. Just like when you visit most places for whatever reason. A photoshoot doesn't affect anyone, filming a music video is shitty if there's anyone else around trying to mourn or whatever. If no one else is around then idgaf.

Good for you. I don't think it's the dead anyone is particularly concerned about. It's the LIVING people who go into the grave to pay their respects, and see disgusting displays being carried out on top of people's graves. At the very least it's just embarrassing.

I always see it as more of an insult to the people mourning at the graveyard.
Everyones got their own opinions on respecting the dead ect (ranging from "they are dead, they wont care" to "Respect respect respect!!!")

I feel really bad for any patrons in that graveyard. I'm fairly ok with most shoots so long as they are a) respectful of the people around them b) try not to get names in shots and if you do blur the damn things out. c) have a purpose. Honestly I'm ok with more well shot and coordinated photos that use the space and setting well rather than the "Im going to take my crappy camera, and I who calls myself a photographer, am going to attempt an artsy grave shoot for shock factor." so well composed photos get a higher grade for me.

And a good tip for those going to, or even thinking about a graveyard shoot. Try to go to the old part of the grave yard, if your planning to do a shoot there I'm going to suspect you dont have a huge problem with having your shoot at a grave yard. But theres likely to be less mourners at a place where the graves are really really old (less people to remember them alive after all) and the old graves tend to look a tad bit more elegant for some reason. And to me kinda set the setting a bit better.

Seriously, that's the kind of thing people should do.

Personally, I've considered taking photos at a cemetery. Mostly Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier. I'm more interested in the architecture and landscaping then the actual gravestones. My grandparents are buried there, and their graves overlook one of the lakes. Pic related, there's a chinese buddist temple there.

Also while googling, I found some interesting gravestones. Also, I kind of like the idea, that if you actually WANT to use a gravestone, it should actually fit your theme, and you shouldn't just treat it like some park bench for you sprawl and crawl around(especially because many people have to pay good money for the grave/tomb, the funeral, and the plot space.

Also, it'd be nice to pay some respect, leaving some flowers is always nice.

Something like this, I can imagine being used in a Rule of Rose photo.

So, if these kids weren't acting like such assholes, I would have no problems with them just being in a graveyard. The notion that graveyards are these sad, solemn places is really a bit of a recently developed social construct; a hundred or so years ago people used to hold motherfucking bazaars in the middle of the cemetery while people were being buried. It was just like going to the park or the market.

But that being said, these kids are certainly being assholes, and while the space itself may not have any inherent claim to respect, the people around them do.

Going to state the obvious here, but most of those graves look to be hundreds of years old, I highly doubt anyone is visiting them. It's pretty easy to tell the difference from a modern, regularly visited, maintained graveyard and very old one.

From what I've seen (I've only been to a few meets and even that was a while ago) most of the members are pretty well-behaved and polite in general.
But as they say, a few bad apples spoil them all.
I've seen a few people complaining about these girls, though I ca't say much as I've never seen them, due to me having not been to a meet in quite some time.

Though, knowing now that quite a few of the memebers are reading this... I'd reccomend ou don't blow up if someone insults you, much less on the internet where we can all see it. Plastering "OMG HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT ME? FUCK YOU GUYS" etc etc. Isn't going to give us a good impression of you. take in what people have said, maybe reconsider your behaviour in future.
Aplogise if it's needed and move on.

We're in a group, and it's like what it was said on School trips. When you're with us, you're acting like a representative of the group. Please watch how you behave.
cosplay is already seen as a little unusual, the last thing we need is a bad reputation.

I don't think dancing around like retards counts as disrespect. Do I think it's faggoty and annoying? Yes. Would I think it's faggoty and annoying regardless of where they were doing it? Yes.

No real direct disrespect is shown, an example of which would be that story of that guy pissing on the war memorial. It's safe to say there are still living people related to the people that died to be sufficiently upset by that. Or any real vandalism, which is obviously a no no.

However, the people here have been dead an incredibly long time. There are plaques and commemorated items (trees, benches, etc) all around the UK and people have their ashes scattered everywhere. If we were going to go along the whole 'dead people are here, we should respect that!' then we'd have to be wary of pretty much everywhere we walked.

This would be different if it was a new graveyard fyi, winding up mourners is not a cool thing to do. Also the graveyard keeper kicking them out is fine by me, my little brothers get kicked out of shops for being annoying little goits sometimes, I see it much in the same vein.

Still, this is just another example of people blowing things out of proportion a bit and jumping on the bandwagon.

Okay, this was an historical site. No, there would be no mourners there (earliest grave is late 1800's I think) but a couple of tourists. They did this independently of the group, and it's only really been discovered today by the rest of them from what I can make out. Yes they were stupid, playing a god awful song and generally showing no respect. I believe that their actions were not meant to be malicious.
