Hacked together a Roll dress in an impromptu Power Hour(s) last night. White part needs to be fixed and is just pinned on, so it's all wrinkled, but I have the shape down. I'm still taking in and tweaking the hemlines on the dress so nothing is hemmed yet, but I'm so glad I'm actually getting shit done again after like 5 months of not! :)

This is the Mega Man 8 or Mega Man and Bass Version of roll of course.

I'm derping around, practicing doll making. I made the one on the right really quick to see how I liked the general shape and with some clothing on.

The one on the left, I doubled the pattern size, and I'm just practicing making smaller clothing. I'm using stuff I have around the house already. I figured out when I make more in the future, the hair and little detail pieces are going to be made of probably felt(so I can do some of the odd hair styles.

I figure, if I really clean up the hair and clothing construction(the clothing and hat can be taken off the big doll) I figure $5 for the little 4 1/2" doll, and $15 for the 8" doll.

I used Bel as my test run since I already had leftover fabric from my old costume.

I might even consider making some separate little costumes and base dolls to sell. Like if I make a Miku doll, and I have say, the default outfit, and maybe one of her project diva outfits for sell. So people can dress up their dolls. The harder the costume, the higher the price.

i think your prices are too low.
how much time does it take? how much does it cost for your materials?

    >>5451553
I'm just throwing out an estimate right now, since most of the materials I already have at home.

But when I go out and actually start purchasing more materials(like the batting for starters) then I'm probably going to get a better idea of my costs.

They'll probably end up costing more just because of material cost alone. Labor, I don't even know yet. More time I put in, the more time I can figure out my labor costs.

The outfits are most likely going to pull up the body, rather then go over the head. Some of them are probably going to have snaps in the back or the front, really depending on the outfit.

Really, it's kind of just an idea right now more then anything. If I find it viable, I'll do it, otherwise, I'll just stick to the basic outfits.

Today was hell. Did nothing but draft patterns and make test pieces. Realized my whole plan for doing a breast plate was fundamentally impossible. Had a test spot of bleach actually turn the material darker after a few hours instead of lighter. Then proceeded to hand paint a glove of said material white.

Realized about half way through painting it that I was not painting the LEFT glove but the RIGHT one which I need tomorrow to not have my hand broken during a Lichtenauer class.

I guess if the oil paint isn't dry tomorrow, I'll spray it with finisher and hope I don't get white shit on everything and that any various damage from sparring won't require too much repainting.

Bought all the shit for my Roll boot modification, EXCEPT WHAT I NEED FOR THE BASE :'(

So quick question here: I'm doing Roll (pic) and for her boots I was going to get some large sneakers OR old boots from a thrift shop, build a base using foam, and then fiberglass over it then paint. Does that sound like a good idea, or should I try to do paper mache and fiberglass instead? I can't decide if I want to do foam to give it size and ease, or do the whole process of wire and paper mache and then fiberglass? Would putting the fiberglass over the foam fuck it up? I've only used it over paper mache before.

Personally, I don't like the fiberglass idea(may not give a lot of flexibility since it's a shoe). I think you should build a frame out of the foam, then make a spandex bootcover.

uhhh you realize her shoes are supposed to be metal right? Spandex would look terrible (IMO) Thanks for trying though! I don't mean to be a bitch ><.

For clarification: I'm trying to mimic metal here, and I want to know the best way to do it. The flexibility of the boot shouldn't be a huge issue because of the size.

She's a robot, of course they're probably going to be metal.

But consider the fact you probably want something that will match her dress. Also, even in that illustration, her boots don't really look metallic.

Also, they DO sell metallic spandex.

Also, another option to consider is pleather. Which can also have a higher sheen factor then just the regular fabric. A lot of megaman/zero/etc... cosplayers use pleather to create the megaman armor.

Thanks for the imput! I'll think about it, but I'm really going for a metallic hard sheen here (this is part of a group cosplay and my Proto Man already did his in fiberglass). If anyone has used it before, I'd love to know!

I'm SO HAPPY WITH THIS. Your construction and fabrics look amazing and the mask looks great. I considered doing Fi for awhile before settling on Zelda and decided way back then that a mask would look better than the face paint/ normal wig that everyone else does. I'm so glad someone did it so I can see! it all looks so good.

RELATED PROGRESS (sorta)- I completely finished painting my Goddess Harp yesterday. Still need to add the strings and seal everything, and I'm kinda unhappy about a few rough patches (that you can't really see in the picture), but otherwise pleased. I'm not a prop person, so way more effort went into this than should have.

note: actual color of harp is a lot more yellow-gold than picture

It still had to be stubbed, cut and styled, and it took two weeks to complete. I love Arda, but this is their worst wig. I am very happy how it turned out though. It's going to be used for Nagisa from Strawberry Panic.

Thanks~! It's actually made entirely of Sculpey on tinfoil.. kinda unorthodox for something bigger, but I had a LOT of sculpey lying around, and it was something I was already comfortable working with. Not to mention cost-efficient. I used a little more than one
    >$12 box of sculpey ($6 if you buy it everytime you get the 50% off coupon at joanns like I do)
    >$2 worth of tinfoil
    >$.50 wooden dowel
    >$1 tiny tub of wall plaster stuff
    >$3 can of primer
    >$3 gold auto paint
    >$10 sealant

It was barely a $20 prop, which is excellent considering I'm dead broke right now. Writing a tutorial for sculpey props for anyone who might be interested in the future, since I've never seen one before and I don't think it's TOO awful of a method. This thing's sturdy as shit, too.

(sorry for the ridiculous answer to your simple question)

I think "close enough" is fine especially when it comes to shoes. I find it pretty hard to get the EXACT shoes for everything. When I did Madoka I was lucky enough to come across a pair of shoes that looked very close to hers and just spray-painted them red/added ribbon. Pic is them before I spraypainted and added ribbon.
    >> Anonymous 02/05/12(Sun)18:00 No.5459081
    >>5458845
That is SUCH a great idea! I've used tin foil as a base inside of props I covered with model magic to save material but this is just ingenious because you can fire that shit and not worry about it offgasing like it would if you build the sculpey on other stuff.

    >>5459056
I think shoes are actually really important considering how many people just do "close-enough" (when in reality it isn't) and act like they have accurate cosplay. The shoes are just as much a part of the costume as anything else, so I don't understand why people get lazy with them. That being said your base shoes are awesome, and I bet the final product was perfect. The heel definitely looks close enough for real IMHO, the difference is so marginal that it doesn't impact the look of the design. Shoes can be the trickiest things sometimes, or at least I find them to be if one needs to cover a base. Boot covers are easy, but when it comes to stretching one piece of fabric over the toe to get the seams accurate...well that's when it turns really tough for me.

Yeah, when I put a cosplay together, I try to be as accurate as possible. Most of the time shoes are not a problem for me. Resources are slim where I am at. So I have to order something and
I was just considering tea parties, since they have those cute straps, BUT they dont have a heel. Plus I was planning on ordering some at some point to wear otherwise. Two bird one stone thought.

I did find a pair that are actually pretty close.
Pic related, I just have to decide if I want to fork over the shipping.

I agree shoes can definitely be the trickiest part in a cosplay. What I mean by "close enough" is that you might have a few details missing but they look pretty much like the characters otherwise.

    >>5459166
Honestly what I do for shoes is I just shop around shoe stores and just look for a "base" and then just go from there. The shoes I got for my Madoka were $20 at Walmart, which could save you a lot of money of the shoes themselves plus shipping. I wish you luck!!

I finally did my wig and make-up test for Zatanna and I'm pretty happy. My only gripe is that while the lacefront I bought and styled looks decent from the front and side, I have to pull most of the hair forward from the back for it to look thick enough so there isn't much dangling in the back.

Makeup wise I'm trying to decide if I'll need falsies, I'm really bad at putting them on so it's a huge ordeal for me.

    >>5457657

    Ririchiyo top progress!

I tried it on with another hakama backwards so I could see what it looks like with the backboard so excuse the black hakama. And I accidentally put the right panel on top. Whoops.

Still need to put bias tape on the sleeves and trim and untangle and trim the wig. My phone makes the bias tape look a lot darker than it actually is too. Its more reddish in person.

Two bits of progress from the last few days. First up, I attached the second flounce to the main skirt. Forgot to take a pic when the first went on, but oh well. After I put the third and final one on all that's left is the waist band. I also started on the second petticoat.

I cut out the hoops for the hoop skirt. The bands still need to be straightened and some of the hoops shortened, but it's basically done. I'll take a picture of me wearing all the underwear sometime.

This. Most people can half-ass a cosplay and have it still be recognizable. But posting it on /cgl/ gets a wealth of opinions and suggestions that others wouldn't say because "it'd hurt your feelings". Also, /cgl/ has people from all over with different skills and experiences and can point things out that others wouldn't notice or suggest things way outside of the box that work perfectly.

And there is the fear of being posted in one of those bad cosplay threads.

I plan to make two masks; one for photoshoots with no visibility, and another with vision slits cut into the leading edge of the mask. I also plan to have a handler.

    >When you formed the plastic by hand over the mold, how did you keep it from stretching too much when you pulled, and hoy did you prevent marks on the surface of the hot plastic from your gloves or whatever you were using?

I used a piece of styrene held in place in a frame. Once the styrene was heated it was drawn over the mold. My gloves never touched the styrene when it was hot.

The final product will be cast out of resin, these are just to get an idea of what looks best before making the final mold.

Would it be possible to do the ear-things out of a thicker plastic/eva foam, or whatever?

Judging from >>5464184, it seems like the ears actually have a good bit of width to them, in the same way that a laurel crown is pretty insubstantial, even though it's still got thickness, if that comparison makes any sense at all to anyone besides my sleep-deprived self.

Either that, or maybe model magic it? If you use model magic, I suppose you could end up mold/casting it as well, if you wanted the horns to be done out of resin as well...

This is just a mockup, the ears are just card stock on this one.

got the wig I'll be making into Roll's ponytail today! Along with the Jeannie I have in the same color from Arda, I should have a cute thick luscious ponytail going on in no time! (it's the color 'light blond' from arda, and is pretty yellow, but this was also taken in quite yellow light, so it's not THAT yellow XD)

First I printed out an ultra enlarged picture of the flower pattern. Then I cut out the negative with an exacto knife. I us-ed that as a stencil. Then I painted a bottom coat with white screen printing ink so it would give the blue an even base to be painted on. Then I painted over the white with a blue I had to mix myself.

Depending how many I can get done I want to put some up on etsy, and make some mini size ponies as well (like 6 inch, this one is approx. 18 inches tall) but since I do costume commissions the ponies are a bit of a side gig atm, so it'll all depend on how much spare time I can get.

So I got my second wig today. I need wig help, big time. This is for SS Zelda. My first wig was a dark yellow color (see main picture), and while it looked good in BRIGHT lighting, I found that it just looked dull and dark in any lighting that wasn't ideal- like indoor con lighting. (see top left picture for example). So, I decided to order another wig, this time lighter so I didn't end up with the same shade of yellow, and it ended up way too light (see bottom left), a white-platinum blonde.

So what I COULD do is dye/tint the platinum blonde with yellow sharpies, but I'm a little hesitant if the other wig is satisfactory as it is. I could probably use the platinum blonde for something else later.

tldr; should I use the yellow wig that only looks right in good lighting or try my luck at tinting the platinum blonde wig, meaning I won't be able to use it down the road for another cosplay. And tinting it might not even come out looking good.

Oh shoot, I forgot to mention one other negative about the dark one. It came pre-cut, so the hair is kinda angled down from the bangs, and I need the pieces in front to be long for this cosplay (she has things that attach to the front pieces), so I'm gonna have to pull a lot of hair forward or something. Maybe cut out two really short wefts from the back where they won't be missed. Might be a pain. grahhh, why can't ebay wigs just show up at my house exactly the way they looked in their pictures? That would be nice.

    >>5474093

Can you buy some extensions from a ethnic beauty supply store (usually found in the poorer parts of town/ ghetto)? Where women get their weaves from? Cause if you can get to one I'd just buy some extensions, make them into clip in extensions and sharpie dye them.

That way if you ever run into another character with hair that color and length all you gotta do is take out he clip ins.

So I went into the magic land of corel paint shop, and did some color ideas for Mrs Cake(Just pretend it's awesome and matches all of her colors). The far right is the blouse I bought, and the apron I'm going to use for the pattern. The picture is super dark, since the shirt is plain white with some black trim. The ruffles are bright pink.

The center shows my idea. I'm going to make a white skirt, and dye the shirt and skirt together to match Mrs. Cake's coat. The apron will have the orange/yellow like her apron, with the inside being a lighter color. I'll have her cutey mark on the apron pocket. I'll have the ruffles around the straps match the color of the one around the pocket.

I found a pair of older style lace of heels, they look around 1940's style. I'm going to paint them to match my dress.

I wasn't going exact, but I'm trying to go with a bit of a 1950's style housewife.

Question, should I stick with the solid for the lighter part of the apron, or bring in a patterned fabric, kind of like the ones I have in the image?

Also, should I consider some gloves? Maybe in a pink?

The boot cover is actually going to be vynl, so I was using an old bed sheet I've been cutting up for test pieces to pattern it.

I'm a little worried about it, but I repinned it to be smoother and I think I mostly fixed the kinks when chalking the lines.

Should I add another half inch in addition to seam allowance since vynl is less forgiving?

I like the 50's housewife idea too. Sounds like a swell concept.

A pattern for the yellow part? Maybe vertical pinstripes, or something equally subtle. Something like those cupcake ones seem like a little too much.

The only gloves I can see a housewife wearing dressed like that are either oven mitts or rubber cleaning gloves. Mite b cool.

There isn't anything wrong with the Stardust, I just don't like how the colors are arranged and I know purple wouldn't frame my face very well. Plus I had a white wig I had used before laying around and decided to just put some labor into it. 10 dollars in sharpies > 30 dollar wig.

This seemed like the most relevant thread that I could find to ask this in. Can anybody help me figure out how to get rid of the puckering I have in my picture? I tried cutting a little at the edges so the hem/seam wouldn't do that when folded over, but it didn't seem to help much.

What kind of fabric is it? It looks like vinyl, which is notoriously evil for any sewing whatsoever. Could you take a picture of how you sewed it on the other side?

It is indeed vinyl. 4-way stretch. It looks glorious, but makes me cry when I actually sew it. I want to go ahead and get to lining it, but I can't bring myself to do so until I fix this error. Blah.

I would try cutting 'carrots' out of the corners of the white part, so that you can fold the edges under, that or look up a tutorial on making a welt pocket and follow it minus the actual pocket construction part, since that seems to be the sort of effect you're going for.

Hope that helps! It's going to be tricky no matter what because vinyl doesn't iron but if you go slowly you should be able to get it flat.

The trim I bought is premade, but what I'll do is find fabric in the same color or try to see if JoAnn's has even bigger trim. That one was from M & L and was some of the biggest trim they had and it's about as long as my pinky. I'm not so sure on the stripes, maybe I can find something like yellow fabric with some tiny white polka dots on it. Otherwise, I'll probably go with a solid.

I think I might either buy, or make some oven mitts. Walmart has these on their website, so I may buy the more busy pattern and make the mitts with that.

I'm going to swing by JoAnn's tonight and look at some fabric.

Some advice for the future. If you ever need to cut out small shapes like that again, you should use a small rotary cutter. Draw the shape on the fabric (don't freehand, make a stencil or use something pre-existing! Cardboard tube from paper towels or toilet paper look like they would have worked in this instance) and then work rotary cutter magic. How are you planning on hemming the edges of your circles?

I assume he doesn't plan on hemming them (probably can't sew at all), so I offer this advice:
Next time, apply iron-on interfacing to the back of the circles, so they don't fray and they cut cleaner. Or at least dab Fray Check along the lines before cutting.

Decided last night to do some sewing on my apron.

I need to hem the sides on the bottom, add the waist straps, to pocket with the cutey mark, and sew the ruffles on.

You can't see it, but the bow has a cupcake patch sewn in the center.

I remember the one anon saying the ruffles were too small. Rather then making whole new ruffles, should I go ahead and do a double layer of them(like how I have them pinned)? They're not sewn down, but once they are, then they'll look nice and even.
