Can someone help explain something to me that I've been noticing at cons.

There are many people in cosplay that I say during the con, these people are wearing pretty good looking outfits, everything seems accurate, decently made and effort was put into both the costume and wig but they don't really stand out. It's almost as if they're simply wearing the characters clothes or something.

Then on the flip side you run into people who have inaccurate, not so well made costumes, or maybe they're doing something fucking simple but their outfits seem to just "pop" more. They seem to catch your eye when such outfits would just get lost in the crowd.

Why the heck does this happens?

Pic related as an example of the second category

They just have that certain something, it is kind of like why are some people more popular than others in general.
they can be equally as attractive and fit, wear the same out fit, and for some reason one will be much more popular than others.

Charisma, and how well they're acting the character.

I know some cosplayers say you never have to act the part, but most of the technically skilled cosplayers in fancy costumes (like Trinity Blood, armor, ballgowns, etc.) I see act like runway models (that bored, indifferent look) in all their poses. It doesn't matter if their character is a moe moe kyun princess that should be grinning or some pissy character that should be smirking or scowling. It's like they chose the fanciest thing possible, but only know of the character from their reference images and nothing of their personality.

Not saying cosplayers should LARP all day or anything, just that part of cosplay photography is having appropriate poses and expressions.

Part of it has to do with how people hold themselves. If you always stand like a kid hanging out at the 7/11, you always end up looking like a kid hanging out at the 7/11, regardless of clothes.

It probably also has to do with fit? A lot of stuff can be very technically and cleanly made, but if the proportions and the fit aren't right, it ends up feeling less like the character than something that's shaped right but doesn't have finished edges.

It really boils down to a cosplayer not copying poses like a doll but doing their very best to embody the character's personality and letting their personality shine through.

It's amazing seeing cosplayers lose themselves in a character when they pose, it's like they become different people.

Miss enough small details and the costume loses definition

You know, this is part of my personal theory about why JoJo has proportionally the most really good cosplays. If you make it accurately FABULOUS, in order to not look stupid when you combine a FABULOUS outfit with really weird poses, you automatically need to be incredibly top tier at holding character believably. There are very few JoJo cosplayers who aren't able to do this.

    I second the posing aspect.

You could see dozens of the same character, but if you see someone who's into the character and who has dynamic incharacter poses, they stand out in a crowd.

Likewise for if someone has a phenomenal costume but they just stand there with their arms at their sides with no expression, it kind of takes all of the wow factor away from the cosplayer.

Jojo and 40k seem to have the highest ratio of good to bad cosplayers

This helps alot, I'm actually surprised that so many people recognized and loved my Sky High and Gumshoe cosplays despite their inaccuracies.

Is this why people like G's costumes even though they're closet cosplay and inaccurate as well?

I mean his Meekins gets posted a lot but it's missing a million details. Don't know why people like it so much.

what's wrong with the costume in op's pic? isn't that pretty much what Yamazaki looks like? hair and all.

Pretty much everyone hit the nail on the head with this one. Getting an attitude down makes one stand out as they're no longer a part of the people wandering around looking for something. And yeah it brings out the costume. This guy's Yamazaki was pretty awesome and when I saw him dressed as K' he immediately looked at me and got into character. Gave me the lines, the laugh, the pose, and it was just in passing, not even at a gathering or anything.

That kind of thing can make a costume. Granted you don't need to be doing it 24/7 but giving off that character's attitude and energy will help

OP's picture was an example of a good costume. Reason why it was used was cause the cosplayer is just wearing black clothes and dyed hair but for some reason it looks way more memorable than someone in an elaborate outfit

    Sooo charisma thread?

Or at least cosplayers who do a good job emulating the character's personality.
