Agreed. From what I've discovered, there are two ways to do this.

The first is by adding in coloured wefts, much like this (http://windofthestars.com/blog/tutorials/two-tone-wig-tutorial/) but, obviously, with more colours.

I'm planning a Rarity cosplay and (brace yourselves) I want to use my own hair rather than a wig. Wig styling can seem intimidating, but if you're nervous, it can be helpful to find a tutorial to follow along with. That way it doesn't need to be constantly checked and restyled throughout the day either, which saves a lot of primping time.

There's no way you can get Rarity's color without bleaching your hair, and that pretty much says goodbye to "temporary". Also, after bleaching it, your hair probably won't look nice and soft like you'd want it to.
After buying the bleach, toner, dye (and you'd need twice as much if your hair is longer than the tops of your shoulders), brush, cap, and anything else you may need, you'd probably be paying more than you'd pay for a wig of ebay. A nice wig will run you maybe $40, and you could get something pretty good for even cheaper on ebay or maybe even the coscom sale ads.
So really, just get a wig.

Again, it's the art in the MLP community, not these girls specifically. Before people started cosplaying, people were drawing humanized fanart. A huge amount of it featured Dash in track shorts and Twilight in sweater vests. I'd be willing to bet that these girls based their designs off specific art pieces -- I'm almost certain Fluttershy did. To be honest tails can look really stupid on a lot of designs, same as ears and the such. I believe a gijinka design doesnt have to have ears or a tail to recognizably be the character. If they applied blush and designed something that was spunky (i feel like electric types are spunky idk) and had the correct stripes they wouldn't need the giant ears and tail.

She's a professional cosplayer. In any regard, I think all of her cosplays are bad because they aren't real cosplays. People who cosplay to look hot/make money and not for the spirit of the fandom gets shit in my book.

Some of these non-professional cosplays are bad, too. This is something I disagree with. It first began as a little girls toy back in 1982. The show followed the toys to promote the toys. Once gen 1 ended gen 2 started in the 90s the gen 3 in the 2000's. Up until gen 4 it has been a female dominated fan base and always has their target audience been little girls. Bronies only recently came around and they are not the entire fan base. MLP was carried because of the fans of the previous generations and had the collectors/little girls not bought the merch there would not be FIM. So yes bronies are around now but they are not the entire fan base and just a portion of it.

I have a question about ponies' ears.

I'm planning a Rainbow Dash cosplay too, and I'll make the ears from Sculpey. I'm still not sure how to really make them because I don't know I'll wear them. I've seen in some images that they use an elastic band through each ear (pic related), but still, I'm not sure if it's how they are supposed to be, because I imagine they would eventually fall or do not fit. Any good Rainbow Dash cosplayers who DIDN'T just go the short shorts route? I get that she's fast and so running shorts make sense but... I really don't see her running around half naked. These designs just seem like an excuse for girls to show a lot of skin.

These PP's all got it right (more or less; a few are hot pink as opposed to raspberry pink). As a PP cosplayer myself I admit it's a bit challenging, however there are one or two styles on eBay and even more floating around other wig stores. Sure, they're not as common as light-pink wigs, but they do exist.

I think it's safe to assume that the Dragon*Con 2011 cosplay group is the most famous of the MLP Gijinka groups out there, but I wouldn't say that everyone else started copying their style.

RD has giant boner for the Wonder Bolts
Wonder Bolts are obviously the pony version of the Blue Angels.
