To the bastard kids that destroy our store,

I was recently hired two weeks ago to work at my local Kinokuniya as an information desk attendant/stock worker, and must admit, it's been one of my most pleasant jobs since. I was warned, however, before accepting the position, that from approximately 4:00PM until 7:00PM, I would need to be mentally prepared for the influx of you "maniacs" as the staff called them. The "maniacs" I speak of are the group of otaku kids who just hang around the manga/anime area dressed in cosplay. And it's not always the same kids, nor the same cosplay either. I'm totally alright with all of that except for the fact that they leave a trail of disorganization, stains, and trash in their wake. Perhaps my biggest gripe comes from the Japanese manga section. For some reason, even though you obviously can't read a single kana, you linger in those aisles, you block paying customers who are able to read Japanese, and you insist taking volumes out of their shrink wrap seals whereupon you haphazardly leave it in another aisle or even on the floor sometimes. There's a reason the English manga have no plastic on them and are placed in their own section.

I'm just trying to understand. Are you aware of the results of your actions? Do you not care that someone cleans up after you? Does it not bother you that it's because of you that every single staff member dreads working in that section and has slowly grown to despise your "type"? If it weren't for the double pay during the weekend when the local anime convention hits the town, most of the staff wouldn't hesitate to request being off those days.

Nothing new here. I used to work at Borders before their sad little ship started sinking and we always had kids lying or sitting in the aisles reading manga... even though there were perfectly decent squishy chairs and cafe tables where they could sit together and read.

I guess it's part of being young and not giving a fuck about who you're blocking, how big of a mess you're leaving, etc. etc. shit happens. You could try speaking to them and asking that they leave anything they don't buy in a neat pile or something. As for un-shrinkwrapped shit, don't you have a shrink wrapper there at work? Borders did and it was used on the items that got opened but were still complete and new.

As far as the sitting in the aisle, you tell them that it is against fire code to be blocking aisles and you'll have to ask them to leave if they don't move. For the whole opening the books business, tell them it is akin to stealing and ask them to leave.

You dumb asses working in shops and just taking it up the ass need to remember that while you are there to help your customers find what they need, you are also there to protect your store's assets.

I was in a bookstore some time ago and a trio of hambeasts had beached themselves on the floor in the manga section. It was a pretty small store and there wasn't much room to move around between aisles. I said excuse me but they apparently were ignorant or too absorbed in their mangu to hear me. So I had to go all the way around the other aisle to get a shelf that was literally inches away from their blubberous mass.

I think it's way rude. Sure I can walk around. But have some common courtesy. You can't just sit on the floor in a narrow aisle, blocking the path for everyone. I bet they didn't even buy any manga.

    I work at Target.

I spend at least half of my day trying to help full grown Adults with no concept of patience, who refuse to read anything, and insist the checkout lane conveyor belts are absolutely filthy even after I've cleaned them. I was once reported for telling someone "Thank you for all of the Quarters" after they paid $15 in change. Apparently I humiliated them. I once had a 60 year old, obese, bra-less woman pull the neck of her shirt down to past her ribs in my line because I wasn't showing enough sympathy to her " I just had Heart surgery look at my scar" story.

That's just the shit that you have to put up with at retail. At least in your situation you have the means to anonymously humiliate them.

kinokuniya is not about anime and manga as you are making it out to be. never is, never was. in your eyes, if that's how you see it, maybe so, but 3/4s of the store is always dedicated to those who are fluent in the language. as for the oversea locations, its main purpose (as stated by storehands themselves) is to serve as home away from home, or ease of access for japanese natives to access materials that would otherwise prove costly in time and money to obtain.

I try meter it for each person depending on appearance and what they're getting. If there are kids in the line buying toys its up, if it's one lady getting random junk it's down, if it's a fat middle aged guy just getting booze it's pretty much neutral. I make an effort to not be obnoxious while keeping things interesting for myself.

Honestly I'm getting the feeling that you just enjoy being contrary.

I worked in the Claire's Boutique with the highest shrinkage rate (see: theft) in the country as a teen. People would let their toddlers sit around, opening candy (which they would eat half of and stick the gooey remains somewhere on a shelf/storage container to stick to 15 other pieces of merchandise) and taking 1 earring off the 6 pack. Fuck those people.

My first retail job was at K-mart. It was nicer than other K-marts, but, fuck. I think layaway was the shittiest part of that job. People with no hope, and people who will instantly hate you for being the layaway counter person is soul crushing. Working register was also shitty because our systems were ancient beasts that needed redrafting every shift because of software problems. Being on the floor was nice. I got to work hard, help people, and my softlines manager loved me. Some kid threw up in shoes a few times, but I'd rather have been on the floor than layaway or checkout.

Actually checkout may have been the worst. In the time I worked there (which was very brief) we had 4-5 instances, 3 of which were caught, 2 which got away.

Retail sucks. I'd rather deal with fast food.

This is really annoying because it gives us other "weird" people a bad reputation as well. Like the other week when I went into Kinokuniya. I wasn't planning on going in and I happened to be wearing Lolita that day, but I was with a group of friends and we happened to pass by and they wanted to go in. The whole time I was getting the dirtiest looks from the staff. It's like they assumed that just because I was wearing Lolita I was a disrespectful bitch like some of the kids who go in there in their cosplay when really all I wanted to do was find the new GLB.

Then blame the other pissy lolitas that came before you. The staff do not discriminate unless there is reason and there is nothing to immediately differentiate between the rude freaks and the polite freaks.

It might be unfair, but that's bias for you. You work with it and act against the stereotype well enough so the staff can think 'ah, not this one' or you can bitch about them on the internet about how rude they are.

I understand OP's gripe. They could have worded better, but regardless, it is annoying when weeaboo types park themselves in book stores and leave it a mess. It's a book store, not a library. Buy your books and leave, be courteous to those around you. I imagine it may be a bit worse in stores like Kinokuniya, but just know OP, that not all of us who enjoy manga and such are as unbearable as they are.

Funny thing is all that kid is going to remember is how its mom ruined its birthday.

    Reminds me of a story.
    > It was the 4th of July and I went with a couple friends to a public area to watch the fireworks. There was this gross family of redneck fatties sitting on lawn chairs with a small portable grill. They had supposedly been there since noon (how did they manage to be so far back?) and they were bitching at anyone who sat 10 feet in front of them. My friends and I managed to sit just outside their territory. Once the fireworks started every single person in the crowd stood up so naturally we did too, but we were nice enough to cross the five foot sidewalk and stand with the crowd.

    >Turns out that's not good enough though. The fat woman walks up to us and says, "Not to sound like a bitch..." Who starts off that way and thinks that okays it? "but we've been here since noon and my daughter needs to see the fireworks." Her lawn chairs were 15 feet behind me, she somehow had this huge area cleared for herself when in reality the rest of the place was packed full of viewers, and she just wanted to stay seated while watching the fireworks IN THE SKY. She could have stood up and put the little girl on her shoulders to give the best view in the place. Instead her brother or something comes up and asks my friend if he's looking for a fight and starts cursing. We threaten to call the cops, people are yelling at this guy for cursing in front of kids, and all that little girl will remember is how her family ruined this day.

I work in a public library. Mostly quiet and people are often respectful. I say often because you'll have some jackass come in and act as though his time is worth more than anyone else's. The rest of the folks are nice. I have information they want. Be it research help, finding a book or teaching them how to use the computers.

Work since Christmas has been a bit difficult since everyone and their grandmother got a new kindle/ipad/nook/e-reader for Christmas. You can bet your sweet ass that the nifty gadget that Grandma got, nobody was willing to take the time to show her how to use it. Why? Because she's stubborn as hell and wants you to repeat the same steps every half minute.

So she comes into the library to get free books loaded onto it. It's not too bad. Kills a good half to a full hour explaining how to use it. (Power it on by pressing here...)

Did have a weeaboo group come in two weeks ago. Haven't seen them since.
    >Weeb: Hey, do you have "Man-guah"?
    >Me: Yes. It's in the graphic novel section. We have a adult and young adult section. Would you like to see them?
    >Weeb: calls her friend a "baka" and tells him "I told you so" - continues talking about getting her allowance to buy some new game. Asks her friend to give her a ride since her parents won't let her borrow the car.
I pick up on the allowance bit and decided to tell her about our teen game nights where we watch some anime.
    >Me: If you're interested, we have herpderp night for teens.
    >Weeb: LOL, HOW OLD DO YOU THINK I AM?
    >Me: I dunno, maybe 15?
    >Weeb: laughs and tells me that she is 20 and her friend is 21.

However, I don't doubt in the slightest that they can get infested with them though, especially in a place like Little Tokyo. I must've just been incredibly lucky.

sage for offtopic rant but I HATE THAT.

I dont work retail, I'm a student, but this still piss's me off. There was a radio broadcast here where I live where this woman takes over the waves when I happen to be driving home everynight. Hate her but I like the selection of music they play, anyways, she goes on about a parenting speech. And goes into how great a mother she had and how thrifty her mother was, because apparently instead of dropping her kids off at a daycar, changing her hours slightly, or with a grandmother (she mentioned that they could afford day care but the alternative was cheaper), was to drop her and her older sister off at a borders for hours. And leave them there for a whole day.

She then went on to say it wasnt about money so much as her mother was just really busy. It pissed me off, bookstores are not a day care. I was just more pissed she kept defending herself and her mother when people kept calling in to say how they didnt agree with it. I feel bad for those who need to work full time and cant afford standard day care, but I also feel bad for the kids and the employs who are turned into babysitters.

Sorry needed that out of my system. It ticked me off. Sorry you got to deal with that OP, but then again it comes with the job.

    I understand your frustration, OP...
But what can you do? Nothing. Just clean up after the assholes, suck it up & do a good job.

You may get away with things like I do, such as: when someone goes to shoplift something & puts it in their purse or sets stuff down in the wrong section ask them "Oh, hey there :D Did you want me to hold that for you at the counter while you continue shopping?"

As for weebs being in sections where they clearly don't understand shit, 2 things:
    1. I don't know moon speak, but I do buy some books based on imagery (architecture, interior design, fashion & such)... & I'm not the only one.
    2. If it bothers you that much to where you can't ignore it, frequently ask them if they're finding everything alright & if there's anything they'd like for you to set aside at the counter for them. People usually move on once you start calling their bluff.

I hate working retail too, but it works around my school schedule & I'm damn good at 'customah service', also, I consume a lot of candy & tea on the job. Puts me in a good mood.

The Borders Express at my local mall got so bad that they had to put up signs in the manga section saying you couldn't have backpacks and you couldn't sit and read the manga. Eventually it got even worse and they had to re-arrange the store so the manga was right next to the check-out counter so the employees could keep an eye on it.

    dear op
I've never been to this store and I live in NYC. I feel you.
retail is awful and people are dicks. but it doesn't matter if it's retail or corporate, people simply act like apes because they don't want to do it at home.

I remember there being a Waldens book store in my local mall YEARS ago.
all the stupid fat kids would sit/stand there reading manga.
I would walk into that section to look for a new volume of whatever and oh look, tripping over some stupid fatfuck.
THEY COST $10. IF YOU CAN SIT FOR A COUPLE HOURS TO READ, YOU SHOULD HAVE $10.
anyway tl;dr I would always be a dick to those fuckheads and when they'd retaliate I'd kindly leave and get security/a store manager and tell them they are stealing.
you can't do shit like that in a comic store, so why on earth do these stupid fucking faggots do this in a book store?
manga isn't even all THAT expensive (at the time I could pick up Tokyopop stuff for like 5-12; I can't imagine todays prices being no higher than $20 for something not specially packaged)
you can make them stop, OP.
report it to a manager. these people have no right to damage the merchandise as it is akin to stealing. you go into a clothing store, try on their clothes and continue shopping? you will be arrested or something.

OP: your store should have some form of "security" be it actual in-store Courtesy Associate or a rent-a-cop. tell your manager about what happens. unsealing your merchandise ruins the quality. who isn't to say they aren't standing there, taking pictures of the contents anyway?

really tl;dr slap their shit and get them kicked out. they are bad for business. cleaning up after people who misplace books is one thing, but going out of your way to treat a store like some halfway home is disgraceful, and those who do should be forced to clean toilets for a living.

    The story behind this:
Latest Issue of KERA we had to hide in a box in the back with discount magazines. This was a copy a Lolita damaged.
She was ranting on about how Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was ugly and unoriginal and pulled off the plastic wrapping, dropped it on the floor and stomped on it and then was kicked out.

So by your logic it'd be okay to discriminate against all black people because of the asshole ones? It's part of the job to not make dirty faces at the customers.

perhaps try asking managers to take photos of the customers who come in and constantly damage merchandise. perhaps get them to put up signs saying "normal clothes only" or something; anything to dissuade cosplayers from being assholes.

another good thing is to have an employee walk around the store. people are always turned off when a store employee hovers over them non-stop, so keeping one person in that section or nearby will help

I haven't been to OP's branch but I have been to the ones in Seattle and L.A. and can pretty much guarantee that the employees in NY are also most likely the passive Japanese who wouldn't dare do such a thing as confront a customer or make them feel uncomfortable. That sort of avoiding behavior is probably the root of the problem. Let that sort of behavior fly by once and they'll just keep on doing it.

It's an argument about prematurely passing judgment. Thinking every person dressed as a weirdo is disruptive is the same as thinking every black person is disruptive or thinking every twelve year old who comes in is disruptive. How about when three asshole Muslims crashed planes in to US monuments, was it fine to judge every middle eastern person because of that?

Even if the clerk hated all twelve year old middle-eastern lolitas, it's that persons job to fake a decent attitude.

Your boss needs to deal with them. They are opening products that are meant to be sealed and are littering it's a fucking BOOKSTORE. You are not allowed to have shit like that unless you are in the obligatory cafe right next to it.

Also tell them if your going to read all of that you better pay for it or get out. Your boss will most likely tell them to get out or have them change what they do or they are banned from the store and will call the police for stealing and destruction or products/ littering

I... I have never once seen a person who liked that movie.

or maybe I am just biased, they didn't feed the extras when we were there for the longest time, and that scene with the little girl driving the cart took the whole damn day for just one tiny tiny shot of it. She freaked out when the cart hit someone's luggage, not her fault as she wasn't the person driving the thing but still... it took half the god damned day to get her to stop crying and then another million years to get her back into makeup. I felt bad for her, but they forgot to feed the couple hundred extras they had hanging out during that time and we were promised lunch man, and then THEN when it came time to film the scene I was in (around 7pm), they put out food and everyone who was in that scene got fucked.

I dunno, I shouldn't be so grumbley about it, i know how hectic things can be, but we were there from 4am to about10pm and over half of the people there were lucky to get water.

anyway, sage for off topic. I hate people who are rude to people working in stores, and you should always clean up after yourself and put your own shit away. but at the same time I despise workers who discriminate against people because they had one bad experience... protip, everywhere you work there will be annoying people and awesome people and they will never look the same.

Oh my god this. I worked at Gamestop a few years ago. It was in a mall, so kids were CONSTANTLY dropped off while their mothers shopped. We'd call security if there were there more than a few hours .. a few even had the audacity to come back to the store and scream at us for calling security! As if the 3+ hour window we gave them to retrieve their child wasn't enough. Jesus.

I used to work at my local YMCA in the childcare room. A dollar per kid per hour. We had two main rules to keep people from taking advantage of our service.
    1. We will only watch your children for 2 hours.
    2. You are not allowed to leave YMCA property after signing your children in.

When they yelled at me I just told them to go to the front desk. Those bitches always gave me the worst glares when they found out that they couldn't just ditch their kids with us all day.

Doesn't matter. Small stores don't need to be clogged up by those stands. Especially during the holidays.
I'm glad they're gone. We'd get regulars at those damn things.
One guy would come for hours & play Metroid on the wii. For hours. Every morning. It wasn't an issue when it was early & nobody was there, but the purpose of that thing wasn't to substitute what he didn't have at home.
One kid would come & talk to anyone on the 360 demo station so much we had to ask him to leave people alone, then he'd talk to us for long periods of time & interrupt actual customers to talk to us as though he had the right & was our 'buddy'...
Worst of all was when particular groups of people would play the Madden or NBA demos with their friends in a huge group in our tiny store. They'd get loud, rowdy & swear a lot. We'd have to ask them to tone it down a lot, but god forbid we ever come off as being racist.
*sigh* We were too small of a store to deal with that.

Opening packaged items is endemic with all sorts of customers, not just underaged otaku. Good way to dissuade it is to have employees circulate and just ask,"Can I help you with anything?"

I go to the NYC Kinokuniya regularly and have found the unprofessional attitudes of some employees more off-putting than anything else. Customers can suck, but it's no excuse to be unprofessional.

There's a pretty big difference between business customers and the customers at Walmart.

    >> Anonymous 01/12/12(Thu)07:41 No.5355589
I'll break it down for you.
    >Are you aware of the results of your actions?
Typically, yes. It's a lack of caring that is prevalent in any store with any type of customer base you can think of, not just weeaboos.
    >Do you not care that someone cleans up after you?
No. A lot of people really don't care. I do, and I try to clean up, but half the job of working in retail is fixing up the store. They warned you, and you didn't listen.
    >Does it not bother you that it's because of you that every single staff member dreads working in that section and has slowly grown to despise your "type"?
Does it bother you that you're a biased asshole who automatically alienates customers of a "type", and therefore probably treats this "type" poorly as soon as they walk in the door, based on bad past experiences?
    >If it weren't for the double pay during the weekend when the local anime convention hits the town, most of the staff wouldn't hesitate to request being off those days.
You're getting double pay, you fucker. That's at least fourteen dollars and fifty cents an hour, probably more. Don't expect anyone to pity you for doing your job at double pay, especially if you're not a Walmart employee.
