Well there's ALA that is one of the big year kick off cons in the area. I usually go to that one and then just wait for Fanime in San Jose. It's really one of the biggest and nicest cons I've been to.
Anime Expo is in the summer time, that's always a popular one too but usually in the Spring and Summer, there are So Cal Cosplay Picnic gatherings that are a lot of fun to attend.
Comic Con's fun but sometimes I get run down with just how many people are there. In March, at the Anaheim Convention Center by Disneyland, there will be WonderCon which I think is a downgrade ComicCon.
Around Halloween time, a nice little Halloween Gathering for some cosplayers is to attend the Mickey Mouse Halloween Party where you can go in to the park and go on the rides and walk around and get candy for Halloween. It's a one night thing but it's rather fun if you get a group of people together.
A lot of people seem to enjoy PMX that happens around November near the same area as ALA but it's kind of a hit or miss.
