Stores: A little nicer than charity stores and thus more expensive.
Good place for basic/DIY items and the occasional lucky find. Again, the
best strategy is to find the ones where the "wealthy" people dump their
stuff. Since the best clothes are the first to go, it's a good idea is
to find out if the store has a particular day that they re-stock with
new items and go on those days. Also, most thrift stores I've been in
will have racks designated for nicer clothes and tend to have their
nicest things behind the counters. I've seen several handbags that were
all authentic D&G, Coach and Chanel. (Of course, these were still
pretty expensive, but comparatively cheaper than normal by about 40-60%.
One of the guys in the store was an expert in handbags, but you can
learn how to spot an original yourself online.) I’m not saying that you
should be insincerely nice, but it pays to be friendly to the staff. If
you’re a regular, they’ll remember your kindness. Since Handbag Guy
knows my tastes, he always tells me if they’ve gotten something I’d be
interested in. (You should always be nice to people who are in the
service industry, anyway. Even though they’re being paid to help you,
their jobs are still pretty thankless.) |
