    Physical disability thread?

    >inb4 PF

How far will you go to conceal your disability? Or do you just not give a fuck and use it to your advantage?

This hobby is so full of people with extremely high expectations and I've always been curious if people with physical disabilities get scolded for NOT covering it up. And of course I'm not talking about if you're confined to a wheelchair, there's plenty of awesome characters you can pull of with that, but I'm more talking about smaller, less obvious disabilities.

TL;DR Is perfection such an important thing in cosplay that you would be put down for a physical disability?

    Discuss and personal experiences...

Holy shit... my eye does that too!!!! I hate it, it's hard to hide... props to her for not letting it bug her. I'm so self conscious of how it looks.

    her eye is actually fake.
that is why it looks like that
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)00:42 No.5190097
You shouldn't have to cover it up. If it's out of your control, then you shouldn't be expected to do something about it. If a cosplayer is in a wheelchair, they shouldn't be expected to cosplay wheelchair bound characters to make their disability concealed. Cosplay what you want and if people complain, tell them you can't do anything about it so they'll just have to deal.

Honestly, with the girl in the OP's pic, I'm more bugged about her ugly friend, and her ugly friend's shitty costume than her eye. Seriously, I had to look twice to see that there was anything wrong with her because I was so distracted by that Vanitas.

More on-topic: I, personally, don't give a shit about physical disabilities. I'd probably recommend cosplaying someone with a mask or eyepatch if you're sensitive about it, though... Or cosplaying with someone who looks worse than you, apparently.

her cosplays aren't shit so idc about her eye. its something she can't help.

like this girl in my area who goes by "Misa on Wheels"
she is super sweet and does great cosplays despite her disability.
its really something I admire when someone is disabled and they don't let it bring them down.

Common misconception. Nicotine is a stimulant which suppresses hunger, which means I'm not hungry as long as I'm smoking but when I stop smoking, I am fucking hungry. Its ok though, people get that confused all the time.

Not quite the same thing, but I have some speech problems. My first con I went as Light (It was a long time ago, alright?), and people kept asking me to say the potato chip line. I hadn't been expecting that and wasn't prepared. Luckily my friend was with me, and would deflect anyone who asked, saying that I had lost my voice or didn't speak English or whatever. He was a prince among men.
When he went to the bathroom, however, a couple girls came over with a video camera and asked for the line. They seemed nice, so I figured I could turn them down myself. I couldn't.
They heard my halting, stuttered speech and started laughing and mocking me, imitating me and calling me retarded. I got away as quickly as possible, but I could hear them all the way down the hall.
I gave the costume to a friend and decided to never do a speaking character again.
Now my speech has improved considerably, and with a little quick thinking I can have entire conversations without sounding weird, but I still only do silent characters.

I wear a leg brace and need a cane to walk long distances. Normally people are pretty cool, but I did have someone ask me to take the brace off for a picture once. I don't mind doing it, just give me some time/space to get my legs right and don't expect me to walk well without it.

I've also had an old lady who happened to be staying at the con hotel ask, "So, that thing on your leg is just a part of your costume, right? It's not real?" That was pretty funny.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)01:50 No.5190434
I'm blind in one eye and I cosplay Ciel at almost every con but the eye I can see out of is the one that he covers up lol. I get a lot of people bitching that the eyepatch is on the wrong eye.. So I lift it up and say, 'I know... but it's better than having to look at this isn't it?' Then they stfu.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)01:54 No.5190455
    >>5190434

I'm legally blind in my left eye. It's actually not noticeable unless I tell somebody. I've cosplayed characters where the hair hangs over one eye, and if I cosplay a character that wears an eyepatch. I'm going to wear it over my left eye and if anybody has an issue, well to fucking bad. I'm not going to go walking around a con completely blind just because they have a stick up their ass over an eyepatch.

It's one thing when a person is wearing glasses, because glasses are easy to take on and off for photos, an eyepatch is not.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)02:03 No.5190504
    >>5190455
But even with something like glass people will still bitch about it even when they're not taking photos... And not everyone can wear contacts.

People are stupid for bitching at somebody for wearing glasses when they're not posing for photos. That's like getting mad when somebody has their purse on them when they're walking around con. They have to carry their belongings on them somehow.

Really lame physical disability contribute, but my vision is really horribly bad, to the point where if I don't wear glasses to a con, I'm not going to be able to recognise my own friends, let alone other characters.

I've been able to get away with this by cosplaying characters with glasses like Mikami, Grell and America.

I like being accurare and wearing coloured contacts, so I'm nervous for next year when one of my cosplays has red cat eyes, which I can't get in prescription. I'm nervous about people giving me shit or not talking to me because I'll be walking around the con with glasses.

My torso and back are pretty warped from Scoliosis even after the surgery, so even If I was skinny enough, I would probably never do something revealing or skin tight because it would look weird.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)02:40 No.5190702
    >>5190569
I'm similar. While I'm not half-blind, I do have bad eye sight. I still wear my glasses while cosplaying and walking over the con, I just take them off for photos. (And really, I don't understand people who complain even then.)
I mean, why shouldn't I enjoy the con when I paid for it? It's not worth walking around a whole weekend with totally fuzzy vision and not clearly seeing everything and everyone.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)02:50 No.5190761
It's not really a disability, but I get some interesting crap for not wearing colored contacts with my costumes. I don't bother because I have astigmatism so I'd have to pay for prescription colored lenses that I'd only wear a few times a year and it's not worth it to me.

Yeah, I once saw an excellent Yoko wearing glasses at Acen. If you asked her for a picture, she took them off.

And that's another reason why you always ask people before you take a photo.

One of my massage therapy class partner was this girl who already had the operation so she had this scar all across her spine amd while shy at first she ended up not giving a fuck about showing it later, so she went to the beach constantly and rarely gave a fuck
She also has an amazing ass so that may be why

But honestly yours is not that noticeable, you got nice hips so people won't notice unless they're looking for something to bitch about your costume

It's not even that I can't wear them, it's that I have to buy from somewhere like 9mmsfx because they'll do my prescription properly instead of some cheap asian plano lens seller, at which point I am spending so much on contact lenses that I could make another whole costume or two for the same price.

Man, I'm still up on the news on whether or not I need surgery. A few degrees off before I can be put under the knife. Do you have S curve or C curve?

Lately I've wanted to do female characters, and even wearing normal clothing shows off one hip is higher than the other. Pants move around weird, and you can see it clearly when I wear tight shirts. I'm rather self conscious of it so I've avoided doing female characters I love, and even crossplay that would show my hips are uneven.

You can even see in pics my shoulders are uneven.... that one's a bit easier to conceal.

You know, with proper posing you can probably minimize the difference. I imagine if you shift it so that you're pushing out the right side more(the left in the photo) It would make it less obvious. Kind of like this.

I'm not sure... how much of what I have is considered a disability.
I have seizures on a fairly regular basis, triggered by weird things. Sometimes sleep, sometimes food, heat and.. especially hormones (so.. that time of the month is horrible for me)
I always have to carry my pills with me incase something bad happens. And they're always followed by horrible headaches. Or.. my face goes numb.
Since I live in SoCal and it gets hot during the cons in the summer it gets kinda difficult.
Aside from that I also have horrible vision. Can't see five feet without my glasses. I can distinguish shapes well and color but detail flies out the window. So I can't tell what is what. I am.. horribly unaware of colored contact for a person with a vision like mine.. so I just go with my prescription contacts... sadly I have black eyes.

    yeah...aahaha
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)05:19 No.5191023
My glasses aren't really a disability that makes it hard for me, but sometimes I black out if I don't wear them for long. I spent an entire day without them at a con, and blacked out when I was walking to the gym hall where everyone slept.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)05:20 No.5191024
I don't have a disability per se but I do have scars on my body because I was born prematurely. So I'm not really inclined to cosplay characters that show their midrift or parts of my back because they're pretty deep.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)07:29 No.5191161
I have a lazy eye when I take off my glasses, so I always keep them on unless I'm cosplaying a character where a 'not quite all there' look seems fitting (I cosplayed River Tam recently and took them off for a shoot).

Never gotten abuse for it in real life, but I've seen plenty of complaints on the internet for people who wear glasses. My favourite is when they tell me to "just take them off for pictures" as if that hadn't previously occured to me.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)08:50 No.5191247
I am blind on my left eye. It's not in any way visible, and people usually think I'm full of shit when I tell them.

I have dropped some cosplays because the hair/eyepatch/whatever was covering the right eye.
I feel stupid for doing it, knowing I can't really help it, but I don't know man.. I only cosplay characters who I deeply admire, so I would feel bad for fucking up like that.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/11(Tue)09:01 No.5191263
    >>5191247
Eh... I don't really care about which side of the face hair falls over or which eye an eyepatch covers. As long as your wig and costume are well done then it shouldn't really matter.

I posted earlier in the thread but I cosplay Ciel on a regular basis and like you, I am blind in my left eye, I just wear his eyepatch on the left one. So far I haven't gotten too many people bitch at me for it; I've had a few people ask why it's on the wrong eye, I tell them, and they seem ok with it.
