That fur is of short pile. Most fur is 1.5-3 inches, or sometimes even longer.

Also, padding in the legs to give that digitigrade look add bulk.

They're also "bulky" so you can have movement in them. The backing of fur does not give like cotton or spandex, so a tight suit would limit your movement and you might not even be able to sit down. A loose fit allows more freedom of movement.

One reason I think they're "bulky" is because that allows for anyone to wear them. You can be fat and the fursuit will make you look like there is a thin person in there.
