That's because all those Mikus are from actually songs.
The Season Mikus have no songs and are quite frankly just for fun. And also I can't answer your question on the "star miku" because really, thats not enough details.
And the Miku in the top right is from the song Akahitoha.

Someone people like the music style, though within Vocaloid there are a few differnet flavors. But I think the aesthetic appeal is the key player. Miku just happens to be the most popular character and the "default" voice.

It's a self-generating cosplay microcosm now. It rose to popularity in Japan because it was a new type of thing where you have a virtual singer. You, or a few persons, provide the rest of the music to back her. Add on others like artists, animators, and movie makers and you've got a whole creative collaborative going on. A lot of the old guard actually moved on because it is getting too corporate. Big companies have moved in and can heavily influence what sells by sheer marketing force instead of the popular being chosen only by the masses. Anyway, I digress.

So you've got your Miku, you're ten thousand other Vocaloids, a shitload of different character designs, and the fact it's popular in Japan. That's all you need to get it going in America and elsewhere. I hate robovoice and while a few producers/composers have gotten around it fairly well, I'll never be a major listener to Miku. As an arist I like it on a whole but I'm not a "true fan" per se and do not pose as one. Expect a lot of the cosplayers to be like usual and not know what the fuck they are cosplaying besides the fact it is pretty.
