Yeah, I was the Rozalin on Saturday. I was using PMX to do a test run on the costume. Used it as a chance to see what I'll do before I wear it again at ALA.

That area was a pretty big loitering area for most people. There's a couple other tripfags in the photo like da0 and Mr. Cat. You can even see my husband chilling in the photo on the bottom right.

Hipster party was the highlight of the con. PMX itself was pretty boring, but I was really happy to see everyone.

I think PMX needed to happen in so far as all the snafus that happened. Just little things here and there that made people angry that added up to the whole atmosphere of the convention by midnight on saturday, hahaha. Doesn't help everyone was traaaaaaaashed.

Now that I think people have made their mistakes on a useless no-name con, I think people will plan things out better for ALA.

I got to hang out with whom I wanted to, so all in all I'm very satisfied.

I'd beg to differ. Small cons provide something that larger ones don't, in theory. And that's a calmer atmosphere. PMX in general isn't a con where I'm planning my schedule about what I gotta do next and make it on time to this panel or the next. It's to hang with friends, enjoy music, play games, and relax.

Small cons give more opportunity to socialize than larger cons as you're so busy moving around and trying to do one thing or the next.

Not enough people were cooking. There was a demand that wasn't being met and people got angry because their orders took too long.

I had a ton of fun personally. Got to hang out with a ton of ppl, partied hard, cosplay, etc. Drama didn't really affect me, but the hotel was out of hot water for like 3 plus hours, which I'm sure contributed to the moods of ppl and therefore added to potential rage. My room was lucky because there was nobody next door for the whole con, and we were at the end of a corridor, so no noise complaints. But some of us seagulls had a dangerous amount of Swag, and had to go home early.

PMX was pretty shitty but it's definitely more lolita oriented. It's hella small too.
ALA is more medium sized but definitely has a lot higher quality cosplayers. It's pretty boring if you don't like cosplay though because they don't have a lot of events.

ALA has a 4000 attendee cap and almost always reaches it and recently hit it a couple times. ALA's masquerade is huge with amazing turn outs. All events are always packed to the nines. People come on Day 0 for ALA. That says something in my book for being a smaller con.

ALA isn't out to be big, it's out to be the best it can be and it's getting close! If you don't like it? Cool, the rest of us will enjoy it and you can go to Sac Anime or something else during the time and enjoy yourselves elsewhere.

Say what you want about ALA, but I've been going to cons in my area for 7 years and have never been to a con quite like it. It's so friendly, and they have those REALLY COOL RIBBONS that you can collect! It's like CON ACHIEVEMENTS. I didn't find the events lacking. There were actually a ton I wanted to go to. And then there's the fact that all the con rooms are pretty much together so you get this like community feel. This also carries to the outdoor area where there are a ton of great cosplayers in a pretty small area. So like RAPID COSPLAYERS. I dunno, it just felt different.

And I told my friends about all night rock band and karaoke and they were like whooooooa. Only downside is no cellphone reception in the basement, which is where most of the events occur.

The focus of these cons has been too much alcohol and partying. I love alcohol and partying, but when I started going to AX in 2002, I had never even had any alcohol before and I had more fun than I am having now. I loved walking around in my costume, meeting new people that like the stuff I do, exploring, watching movies and anime, and just good, clean fun in general. It's turned from when I was younger which was 'DUDE THAT WAS SO FUN TODAY, LET'S GO TO THE DANCE AND/OR FIND A PARTY!!" to the stark fucking contrast of "OH GOD WE'RE SO DRUNK ALL DAY ALL THE TIME. NOISE COMPLAINTS, ANGRY PEOPLE, HIGHEST ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE, WHERE THE FUCK IS MY COSPLAY, WHY AM I SLEEPING THROUGH THE DAY OF THIS WHOLE CONVENTION AND GOING TO SLEEP AT 7 AM. DID I EVEN DO ANYTHING RELATED TO THIS CONVENTION HERE?"

It's gotten to the point of ridiculous for me. Yeah, I am part of this whole shit myself, but I'm not doing it like that anymore. Because of all of this, I have lost a lot of faith in and/or respect for people I used to admire and love. On Sunday I didn't even want to go to cons anymore as well as a couple more drastic decisions I wanted to make. I'm not going to go into detail about my personal drama, which is half of why I was so fed up, but I never got as drunk as I normally do and I guess because I normally get plastered, people assumed I was. On Saturday night, several people perpetuated that I was the reason that we were kicked out of the hotel room, when honestly, every time security was there save for last time of the night, I wasn't there to CREATE noise. I was blamed and made to feel like it was my fault and that I was the one who did it. That felt horrible. I *WISHED* that I *HAD* done something now, honestly. At least there would be a valid reason for it all and I'd be happy to shoulder all of the blame and make it up somehow. Not everybody fully understands why I'm this turned off and honestly hurt by this whole thing, but it's fine.

I watched a close friend completely unravel, I watched everybody get angry at each other and at me for something that all could have been prevented if people acted more responsible and respectful, and I was surprised to learn who genuinely has my respect and who respects me. Everyone's ugly side came out, even mine. I got very angry on a couple of occasions and that's not how it's supposed to go.

At PMX 2009 on Sunday, I trashed my hotel room with some punker friends of mine, ended up doing a bunch of stupid shit in and around the hotel, and that ended up with getting me and a friend arrested for 3 days for public drunkenness and an unpaid ticket I had. THAT WAS WAY BETTER THAN THIS PAST WEEKEND, EVEN THE JAIL PART. Back then I at least had fun.

Almost 4 years ago after PMX, I came on here under my trip back when I barely posted. There was a thread that Maguma was posting in, and it had something to do with how you spent your time at conventions. I expressed that I was sick of being with the party crew and wanted to go back to being a genuine anime/j-culture/video game fan and I wanted to learn how to have fun that way again. Maguma told me I should come hang out with him and his friends and welcomed me as a friend and wanted to help. You know what? I regret never taking him up on it. Maguma always has fun, always has a blast, and is always seemingly having fun. He genuinely loves being there and he doesn't have to be fucked up to have fun. I'm going to do this too. No more bullshit.

I only *sort of* want to go to ALA right now. Mostly because I've been working on this costume for months and I really want to wear it, but also because I want to implement this new/old way of doing cons. If I go, I'm not going to be talking to certain people and keeping a lot of others at arm's length. I will be going to cosplay and enjoy the convention for what it offers and actually buying a badge. I'll be making new friends, and I'll go to panels and the dealer's hall. I can't remember the last time I went to a con and played arcade games anymore. I won't drink because that's what I have to do in order to have fun. I remember that I used to believe you HAD to be drunk at cons because of something W.T. Snacks said that was along those lines of you have to be wasted constantly to even begin to have fun at a con. I'll go to a party at night, but you know, a PARTY. Not just go back to my room because there's booze there anyway. I'm going to a party not to drink, but to have fun with people. A con party will obviously be incidental, but the con will not be a party. At least not for me. Too empty.
