  • /mu/'s favorite bro deadmau5 is hanging out here: http://boards.4chan.org/mu/res/21004009

Two of three migrations down, one to go. Expect some short downtime tomorrow afternoon or evening. Site should be much faster already.
Feedback welcome on AIM at SN "MOOTCHAT"

Server migration complete. New hardware brought online should make things noticeably faster. Enjoy!
PS: Some more goodies coming later this week.

Cgl/, how do you deal with jealousy and envy in the cosplay community? Let's face it, we're in a visually-based hobby where appearance is valued as great as craftsmanship. So what do you do to deal with feelings of envy towards a cosplayer who is, for either their looks or skills, so much better than you? Use it as motivation? Post vendetta threads? How do you deal?

I'm pretty sure appearance means a lot more than craftsmanship.

Personally, if I see someone who's better than me, I use it as motivation to try my best so I can look good too. I even like to take notes on the things they did and apply it to my own cosplay. There will always be someone better than you, but it's something you have to deal with in this hobby.

    I've never had this problem..

    What's it like?
    >> Anonymous 11/08/11(Tue)21:44 No.5142294
I'm happy with the way I look so I don't see any point worrying about that front. As for craftsmanship skills, I'm always looking to improve anyway, if I see something I like done better than I can I will strive to do the same and better. It's the only way to improve I think, to never be truly satisfied and keep striving to be better, even if it's just to better your own work each time rather than to be better than anyone specific.

I do however get compared to quite a lot and it's really quite un-nerving. I also happen to be friends with what you might call 'familiar faces', not 'cosplay famous' but someone you'd recognise and as such I get set against them quite alot. Though I have no idea why. Funny old world

its quite simple. make sure you look better in your costume than they do in their costume. Its better to be hated on that to hate on others

Im actually very shy and self conscious about my cosplay.
I know I dont look bad, I'm just extremely critical.
Lucky I have someone else who is trying to be a cosplay Idol.
So I just pin all my expectations on them...

I'm jealous of girls with cute smiles. I only cosplay serious or ice-queen type characters, or anyone else who doesn't look weird scowling in pictures, because my smile is derpy looking as fuck.

But that's about it. Better craftmanship only makes me want to work harder, and I'm more attractive than 75% of cosplayers anyway (inb4 pics or stfu).
    >> Sly Cooper 11/08/11(Tue)23:39 No.5142800
Well, I mean, I am ugly. That's why I usually wear costumes where my face isn't in plain sight.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)11:07 No.5143793
    I get jealous sometimes.

But I'm good at what I do and I've had plenty of honors so I just remember that and I think "wait what was I jealous over, we're equals"

It's motivation to keep on my toes though. No eating cake everyday, no shortcuts when sewing, no skipping out on taking a second to powder my nose.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)11:19 No.5143807
I don't really get jealous due to people being better at craftsmanship than me, because honestly I am extremely talented as a seamstress, and can construct and finish a garment better than 80% of the people out there. No, my jealousy stems from attention. I HATE the fact that I work so hard on my costumes only to have the person who bought an inaccurate costume get more pictures taken of them at the con.
At least I have my awards.
    *cries in corner*
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)11:37 No.5143838
I'm extremely average in the looks and body department, but have great craftsmanship skills in a variety of areas. So naturally it bothers me when some people get significantly more attention for just being hot than for how their costume looks.

I'm more than happy with my looks, and my boyfriend is hotter than I am. Life is good in that department.

I'm very entitled as a result and actually think all these fat ugly bitches with sewing skills far in advance of mine should be making outfits for us to model, and be fucking grateful we make their work look so good.

Course, I keep that to myself. Wouldn't want anyone knowing I'm a vain bitch, teehee.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/11(Thu)10:35 No.5147107
    >>5147033 to the vain bitch

Oh sometimes I think that too when someone is really really unfortunate looking or clearly needs to step away from the sewing machine and go for a jog.

But then I realize it's a hobby, not a supermodel convention and I reign my thoughts. Everywhere else in life IS a supermodel convention and you get things based on your looks a lot of the time. So it would be nice if the nerd con backed off on that a little.

In the early days of the COSP I remember when it was hardly about looks at all. We didn't even care if the costume was utter crap, we found a fellow fan based on how they were dressed and probably made a new friend cause omg, someone else watches this show, finally I can talk to someone....

But now it's wide spread and populated by people who haven't lived long enough to understand life doesn't end when your BFF isn't your BFF anymore or if you didn't win something in the contest.
ooo, sorry about my get off my lawn rant.

tl;dr Check your thoughts. They are ultimately what you are, and they shape happy fun costume time.

    >Oh cosplay jealousy~ It seems only yesterday that 15 year old girl was screaming and crying because i had a better wig than her~

No, really, stop that! I can't stand it when people act harshly to others that do the same character as them. It used to be same out fit but now its down to the character! I am always happy when i see someone dressed as the same character as me! Because then i dont feel like a total dork. But if i am the only one, then people might not get who i am right away. I mean, when i do my Neil Gaiman cosplays, people don't always get them right away, but when they do, they geek out over my costume and it feels good to geek out with someone over something you thought no one else knew about, face to face, not online.

Also, i like see others do the same costumes so i can check our their skills. Maybe they did something better than i did on the costume, or maybe i did something better. Either way, its a great way to improve your craftsmanship.

When people act butthurt about my costume, unless they are giving me tips, i ignore it. Its a costume based off a fictional charcter created by someone else's imagination, get over yourself.

On what I've read about Worldcon and similar. We have quite a lot of retro threads around here. But I like how you suggest what I said was based on nothing of substance but your little anecdote about everyone being lovely was based on such solidity.
