There's already problems with the RenCen security staff not allowing photographers to take pictures if their equipment is too "professional". Basically they're stopping anyone using something other than a point-and-shoot from shooting in anywhere but the "convention area". (So the wintergarden is off-limits, so is the Marriott lobby.) Hopefully the policy doesn't last all weekend, otherwise... we're all going to have some really similar photos, haha!

Goddamn, those elevators. I was going to go check out around noon and had all my shit ready to go to the lobby from the 54th floor. After an hour, only five or six ones went by and EVERY. FUCKING. TIME. they were either full or going up.

As far as the hotel checkout/elevators go, easy fix: stay across the street at the Marriott Courtyard.

It was cheaper to stay and easier to get to/from the room. Also, connected to the con center by a skywalk, so those to scared to step foot on the streets of Detroit can just walk above them.

This. I can't agree enough! We stayed in the RenCen for 2010 and it was an absolute nightmare. But this year we switched to the Courtyard Marriott - it was SO much nicer! Quieter, more convenient, cheaper, better service and organization, etc. If you're able to, definitely room there instead.

Also, One of the most memorable experiences I had this weekend was sitting at my Artist Alley table at 1 in the morning on Friday night. It's just me and this other girl in the table next to me. Sonny Straight (Krillin, Hughes, etc) and Jon St. John (Duke Nukem) came to our tables completely plastered, it was hilarious, they had gotten kicked out of Anime Karaoke (Wasn't told why), and Sonny kept calling Jon "Tim", as he does the big mouth Tim Allen face all the time, and to look at his picture in the schedule. I agreed that he looks like Tim Allen, .. and William Shatner's love child. Sonny shook my hand. When they were going to leave, Jon asked me if I had a boyfriend at the con, I said yes, he was running a panel, he goes "Okay, Let him finish his panel, THEN GO BANG HIM!" and left.

I was in karaoke, and when I went to the front of the room to see what the song situation was and came back to the guests so I could let them know we were ready for them to complete karaoke room take over, they were gone. ;_; It's not like we were going to cut off someone in the middle of a song to let them sing. I was sad they went poof on us.


Unrelated to the above: Lost my voice (already was waking up with mild cough/sore-throat last couple days before con, so con just sped up the process--with Whose Line and VAT Pony line situation handling being the killing blow), Courtyard was awesome once I got into my room and finally got my mental map to get there without going to the wrong side of the RenCen sorted out, and I enjoyed all the looks I got for my square afro as Kiwi from One Piece.

Next year I think I'll say screw it about being the ride from my friends in town and go up Thursday like I've been wanting to on my own so I don't arrive to full parking lots, thus getting told to park in the Miller garage and thus stuck with a rediculous parking fee for the weekend due to there being no discount for that one. (And I lost my ticket and had to pay an addition $20 for losing it, but I'll own up to my stupidity on that. $40 before that lost ticket fee is fucking rediculous. If I weren't staff and getting my room and food etc for free, I'd have been even MORE pissed. I feel bad for any people who had already blown their con budget who got stuck with a similar situation.)

same here, comic cons are starting to seem a lot more fun to me. but youmacon's always had a really good draw of western-related stuff too, like this year i saw a handful of bat villains, deadpools, and young justice (even a zatanna, all of my hnghhh). not to mention all the adventure time and mlp, AND doctor who.

I did Yin from Darker than Black and Kurau. Absolutely no one knew what I was cosplaying and I felt super buttmad about it, especially because the only guessing I got were (for Kurau) Naruto, and (for Yin) "sexy no jutsu Miroku".
