I remember when Homestuck was really in the upswing of popularity last year.. Not to let me inner hipster show, but I was reading it long before it got this colossal clusterfuck of a following.

I still remember being genuinely surprised when I saw my first homestuck costume at a con. I remember being so giddy when there were other people I could talk with it about.. and now.. it's just.. dildos.

I didn't even hate the trolls before, but holy shit.. how did this all go so wrong? Fuck fandoms.

As for the costumes, I put them right up there with One Piece. They're so fucking simple and plain, so how the fuck do people still mess them up. You've got like 1/1000th the work people put into other costumes and somehow you still can't make horns that are the right size? Or evenly apply and seal your makeup? Or not loong like a titantic douche clown?

I still haven't figured out a way to make my Aradia's horns not floppy/derpy without having to use a headband that's visible on top of the wig, but I'm working on it! Here's a good group to compensate.

Perhaps you could do what I did with Karkat and attach it to a headband underneath the wig? This is going to sound awkward since I don't know what things are called since I'm shit with props, but whatever. You screw the nail into the horns at first, take it out, then shove this little plastic attachment in there to make it so the nail can twist on and off. Screw it in the proper place on the headband and poke it through the wig. Twist horns on. Repeat for the other side.

Hanyaan's wig is style more cleanly, worn more properly, her makeup is cleaner and more precise (especially considering the clown parts she has to add that others don't), and she's got the whole teeth thing going on.

May not seem like as much work when compared to a large, misshapen, and unproportional prop, but the overall quality of her appearance is leagues ahead of most every other homestuck costume out there.

Yeah, that's what I did/am doing for my Aradia horns now! But after wearing them a few times, the wig hair gets tangled around the screw and putting them on gets a little more cumbersome. I think the problem with one of my horns is that the anchor got loose, making it droop since it doesn't screw in securely.

It's kind of silly, since most store-bought Aradia horns still look loads better than mine, but I kinda enjoy the process of making them haha.

Yeah, Hanyaan's Gamzee is still probably one of my favorites, but I do think the fandom has stepped its cosplay game up a notch. That particular picture was taken early this year (April from WonderCon), and at that point, the cosplay in the fandom was still kinda iffy. It's gotten much better, and we've gotten everything from smudge-free make-up to full-on photoshoots and stuff. People tend to focus on the shit in the Homestuck cosplay community, and of course, there's a metric fuckton of it, but there's a pretty damn acceptable amount of good in it too.

after reading all of HS a few months ago, I feel like I'm late to the party, haha.

Karkat has a lot of great poses. Try doing one of his fighting poses, or throw a tantrum. He's a very dynamic character, very rarely is he ever shown just standing around. He's always doing something.

i remember a year ago being the only homestuck at a con. And now... yeah. It's insane. Everybody's stepped up their game so much that I doubt people would even notice my derping other than maybe "heehee her shoes sparkle!" if I were to do all the tutorials and whatnot now. Homestuck's been growing up, with all the associated problems.

I actually do this for Gamzee now, combined with actually gluing the horns to the wig (!!). I've fixed up my outfit since I made it, but there's also a lot that needs redoing by now. Those pants were not the best idea...

Oh well, I'm already doing a how I did my wig walkthrough, I may as well do one for new pants at some point. Don't use iron-ons for pants. Iron-ons for the t-shirts work if you're lazy, but... not for pants dots. They are kind of stiff and bad.

For what it's worth though I have often noticed that quality of costume is not even close to always correlated with quality of person.

I have no fucking idea. The plotline is confusing as fuck and it takes fucking forever to get where it needs to go. It's really quite good, if you ask me, but it is made in a way that is repellant to most people. It really shouldn't be as popular as it is..

My hypothesis is that all the troll characters created an accessible cast of easily identifiable, archetypal characters with easily swapped characteristics for simple-minded folk to latch on to.

I'd wager that many of the people who claim to be fans are just your usual obsessive weeaboo type who just needed a new thing to spaz over, and the simplistic troll characters with their distinct personalities gave them that thing. They probably don't even read the comic, they just want something new to draw over and over, and obsess about, and gibber on with other faggots about..

Seems the fad is slowly dying and people are moving onto random DC comics heroes. I've seen a large surge of faggots obsessing over the Batman Family of characters and even a few suddenly taking interest in older characters for no fucking reason.

Hard to say. I unabashedly blame the Trolls because they're a kind of character that people can cling to easily. Most of them are defined by a small handful of characteristics that, in combination, make them quirky and distinctive enough for people to have favorites. The fact that most of them are not really fleshed out makes them appealing to fans with short attention spans because then they can elaborate on them all they want. And when you get social retards who rarely leave their houses outside, well, all sorts of stupid shit happens.

There are probably a lot of reasons, such as the memetic quality of the humor in the story which makes fans feel like they're in some super-secret club with a super-secret hilarious in-joke that in reality isn't even funny out of context. The quotability of the series, the actually fun writing of the series, and the similarity of most fans to each other creates this huge, gray-bodypainted mammoth of a fandom cancer that people find perplexing and terrifying to behold.

I've just been using tooth black to make my teeth look pointy. Since my mouth is way too small to deal with fangs/dental distortions/ect, that's really my easiest option.

Well, yeah, I've seen that, and it does look pretty cool, but holyshit that detail. I kinda want to go for the simpler, less frou frou approach since they're more pajamalike if anything in the actual story. Though It kinda helps the bodies a little. I'm trying to find a screencap from [S] Wake where it's displayed in higher detail, but Fef isn't a popular enough character to warrant a lot of shots and references.

my biggest apologies for selfposting (even in a homestuck thread), but here is some tooth black pointy teeth. It's what I always use for Gamzee along with some snap-in fangs; my mouth is too small for the full dentures to really work well on me unless I spring for total customs. You can find my costume pretty easily if you want to see more shots of how it looks from a distance or up close.

Oh man, you're that person who wrote that tutorial I used for my makeup, yes! Shit, pardon my gushing for a second, but I must thank you for writing that out for MSPA forum lurkers like myself to use. Yes, I did see that you used tooth black, I just wanted to do a few photos where my mouth would be closed but with the teeth still visible, which is why I was a little reluctant to go with tooth black. But now I am seriously considering it.

Sorry I don't really have any photos of me doing this, since I didn't want to handle my camera phone so much on account of my hands being covered in make-up. I wanted to try making arm gloves out of panty hose to get the troll skin look, but I hadn't sewn before and they ended up looking a sad mess.

The focus on the video wasn't drawn on hassling the worker, it was really meant to be focused on the interactions of the people in the car. I think the worker did a wonderful job not giving a fuck.

I am scared of what I am going to see at upcoming cons for Homestuck cosplay. I can only hope that a good handful of people will step up their game for cosplay, and I pray there won't be a plethora of yaoicreeps. There was an awesome meet up at the previous con I went to in September, it was so well mannered and very enjoyable. My group still have plans for a lot of Homestuck character cosplays, and doing side projects for video's and what not for it, but I can see myself getting out of it if the cancer becomes too great. I will appreciate the web comic from afar.

Be careful with nylons/arm covers for grey skin. They do look good and if you do them carefully, you can get a flawlessly even coat, but under the wrong camera settings, it'll look really dark compared to your skin because they're matte-textured and your skin (plus the make-up and powder) is smooth and more reflective.

This photo came out fine. Most of the guys in the group except I think for Hanyaan, Eridan, and me (Aradia) used the stockings on their arms. They look fine here, but in a couple really stupidly overprocessed photo (for which I blame the photographer entirely- why the fuck would you set contrast up that fucking high), all of our skin basically looked white/very very pale grey, but the people with stockings ended up with really dark grey arms. Looked terrible.

Although as long as you have a photographer who knows what they're doing, you shouldn't have to worry much.

I will admit that for the longest time I had no idea who these homestuck cosplayers were at cons and I thought they were people dressing up as trolls from /b/ or /cgl/ you know internet trolls with star signs on them for some reason I could not figure out. I would see a group and say "Oh look they are trolls" and would expect them to troll and what not. Then I found out that they were cosplaying from some overhyped internet comic that the weebs seemed to explode over and I was like.....O.o Ruined it for me wish I was still in my happy world where they are trolls yelling troll stuffs, and not cheap closet cosplay and weeb screaming.

Hmm, thanks dude, I'll definitely keep that in mind if I ever try pulling that Karkat cosplay off again or any other troll. But for now, I'm just gonna focus on my next cosplay, where I'll be Jade in her three in the morning dress and in dog tier the next day. Also considering the dead shuffle dress, since I have an airsoft gun that is a dead ringer for girl's best friend.
