lol, I love that they say there is only one other lolita in their area. Nope. There are tons of lolitas in Sacramento and in nearby Davis. They have huge meetups up there all the time. It's more likely they just don't want to support a fashion show that isn't really lolita, or fashion.

    Apparently this is her.
She's very pretty, she just has no idea of what looks good. Girl should definitely take some basic sewing classes before deciding she's going to set up her own brand. I refuse to believe an experienced fashion student can come up with such unadulterated shit and think it's worthy of a fashion show.

I also wonder about the models, and everyone else involved. Sure when you're making garments yourself you spend so much time on it and are so proud of what you've made that maybe you don't realize the outcome is just plain bad. But everyone else should be able to see it, right? Aren't the models embarassed?

I don't think there's anything wrong with using geisha makeup or dressing as a geisha if you're not Japanese (or not asian) as long as you're not doing makeup "slanted eyes" or going around saying herro prease.

Then again, the girls seem under the impression that a) this girl is white and b) the Japanese consider the geisha ~sacred~ and that girls don't go to Kyoto and pay someone to dress them as a geisha or maiko so they can prance around and get photos taken.

The girl in that poster looks Korean, and it's hardly anyone's culture except trained Geisha/Maiko. I think a better comparison from that coco poster would be French girls who dress up as ballerinas being racist, or even the whole idea of lolita. Japanese girls dressing as European children, then the rest of the world dressing like them.

I find that hard to believe since the geisha is a huge part of Japanese history. As for non-Japanese people (who are not all white), that could have been said years ago but now with geisha costumes and geisha appearing in pop culture (Memoirs of a Geisha for instance), non-Japanese people have at least heard the term even if they don't understand it. I live in the deep south and my very conservative pastor uncle had even heard the term though he assumed (like many) that geisha was the term for Japanese prostitute.

I don't see anyone saying they don't fall under free speech? Just because something is protected doesn't mean it can't be wrong. You're well within your rights to smear on blackface and dress as Aunt Jemima at a grocery store, doesn't mean you should.
    >> Anonymous 10/26/11(Wed)14:55 No.5103120
    >>5103071
Pretty much any Japanese person with the faintest clue about the world around them would have at least heard about geishas, if not know something basic about them or more. Same in the west, although most people default to "Japanese prostitute in face paint, right?" or something similar. However, just like with any culture or subject in a country's history, there are people that take it seriously and people that don't. Someone who is training to be a geisha or is connected to the culture will probably find more offense in a geisha costume than another person - just like, say, someone who is passionate for historical fashion will be more irritated at someone calling 18th century fashion "Victorian" than someone who doesn't really care.

That said, geisha make-up isn't yellowface and it isn't racist. People look way too hard into this crap The image that uttate used >>5102876 would fall into a stereotype because she person in the costume has walked out of a 1950s movie with a white lady dressed as a stereotypical "geisha-san herro herro tee hehehee" but the make up of the shitty designer is vaguely geisha-like and she's not even white, so c'mon now.

If you're going go overboard and say putting on geisha make-up is racist or at the very least culturally insensitive -- then I guess people shouldn't dress up as cow-boys anymore, or cavemen, or mobsters cause it makes Italians look bad.

Oh! And if you're not Irish or Scottish forever about ever wearing plaid or kilts because that's not a costume, and you're making fun of someones culture.

I also don't want to see any non asians wearing kimonos, or any other traditional asain/japanese/chinese/etc outfits anymore.

Also you'd be surprised how easily the Irish get offended...

I see what these girls tried to do. But, it ended up offending people instead. And it's shitty.

P.S. Asians are notorious for being racist against other Asians. Being Asian, I experienced and witnessed this first-hand.

Not op but that's not what I'm saying. You can express your dislike just like I can express how whiny it comes across. There will always be things people dislike, there will always be stereotyping about every culture. But that's the point! Everyone is stereotyping everyone, so we're all equally treated like shit. Glorious isn't it?

I think if something actually IS racist that it should be brought up. However, at the same time I also feel too many people try to play the "THAT'S RACIST!" card on every freaking little thing.

People are just too easily offended now a days. Everyone takes things personally, and all it gets blown out of proportion. Don't get me wrong -- I don't think people should have to walk around with iron-thick skin. There are things out there that are blatantly racially derogatory -- black face, negative words used to describe anyone's race/religion, just to name a few.

I just wish some people didn't get their panties in a bunch over every little thing. Not saying they should ignore everything, but it's like picking up a bunch of spilled water puddles one at a time when the tub faucet is still on and running over.

People dress up as firemen because they respect them as heroes and the work they do. People dress up as geishas to act stupid and sexy and exotic. There's no respect for the work and effort geishas put forth.

And um... white people have been racist to white people. The current definition of "whiteness" is "Any person of Western European and some Eastern European descent" but it used to mean, "British".

Irish, Italian, and Western European immigrants faced immense amounts of hostility and violence, not to mention the centuries of international warfare between European nations, where they openly degraded each other's lineage and humanity.

Hitler didn't just strike at Jews and Romani, he murdered millions of other people of "inferior" races, who's crime was essentially not being German.

And then there's the Serbian ethnic cleansing, nope, no white-on-white hatred there at all....

I'm not saying it's the same as the racism PoC face today, but it did/does happen. People find all kinds of reasons to be dicks to each other.

And who gives a flying fuck about the ~respect and work~ geishas put forth? It's a costume. It's dress up. For fun.

You're using a very American sense of the word race. Japanese and Chinese people often refer to themselves as being of different races, Hutus and Tutsi believe they're of different races, and if you simply *look* at the incredible variance of culture and phenotype of "white" people, and the hatred various groups feel for each other, it's clearly racism. "Whiteness" is a pretty recent development, and our current classification of races (Asian, Middle Eastern, Black, White, Aborigine, Natives) is fairly recent as well.

Are you stupid? Japanese and Chinese aren't different races. They're different ethnicities *rolls eyes* And I'm assuming you are European? I'm going to sound awfully ign'ant here but I'm so sick of Europeans looking down on Americans that I'm going to have my rant here.
I noticed that many Europeans (note: NOT ALL) have a very skewed view of racism and prejudice. They're always calling Americans racist and backward people (yes, some Americans are) but every European person I talk to, who have at least attended university, always made rude remarks about people do different ethnicities and race. So many of my British friends say that Indians and Pakistani are the same, that Turkish people should get out of their country, and I have friends from France, the Netherlands, and Germany complaining about Polish immigrants. And if they're being so prejudiced, can they really look down on Americans?

I know I'm going off on a tangent here but I'm sick of Americans always being seen as oh-so-ignorant about race issues. Seriously Europeans, why don't you look at yourself and see that you guys aren't perfect.

And how the hell is white vs white racism? That's about prejudice and how people viewed different cultures. And now, at least in America, if you're white, it doesn't matter if you're English and Irish because you're way better off than a black person.

If only one group of people can say a word or dress a certain way, isn't that also racist, or at least widening a cultural gap? Like take away the past meaning and let it be slang or whatever.
Not to minimize how horribly some groups of people have and still are treated, but every single person or group or race or gender has been oppressed or "conquered" at some point in history.
