Sure when you're making garments yourself you spend so much time on it and are so proud of what you've made that maybe you don't realize the outcome is just plain bad. I find that hard to believe since the geisha is a huge part of Japanese history. As for non-Japanese people (who are not all white), that could have been said years ago but now with geisha costumes and geisha appearing in pop culture (Memoirs of a Geisha for instance), non-Japanese people have at least heard the term even if they don't understand it. Pretty much any Japanese person with the faintest clue about the world around them would have at least heard about geishas, if not know something basic about them or more.
