Never been, but it's in San Jose, about 2 hours from my house.

    Worth the trip?
    >> Tim 10/10/11(Mon)20:27 No.5051888
You're basically local, so yes. Fanime is, hands-down, the best NorCal con and definitely one of the best cons in the west coast.

Super chill, convenient venue with lots of eating/hang-out places nearby, wonderful weather most of the time, and pretty choice events and concerts.
    >> Anonymous 10/10/11(Mon)20:28 No.5051896
    That's how far I drive.

Yes. Very very worth it. So much so that people fly in from across the country too.

I've been to all kinds of California cons, and I have to say, Fanime is easily one of the best. It's my favorite out of all the cons I've been to, totally worth the five hour road trip as far as I'm concerned. The location is awesome, the people are awesome, it's just extremely awesome all around. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about it.
    >> Anonymous 10/10/11(Mon)20:29 No.5051902
some of their skits are so fucking amazing compared to other cons. go to it man.
    >> Mika !oRbSrLD/7w 10/10/11(Mon)20:35 No.5051929
It's probably the best convention I've attended. I make sure to go every year.
    >> Justin = BFI !awN63bWuK6 10/10/11(Mon)20:45 No.5051974
Fanime is win. I'm only 18 blocks away from it.

It's a REALLY good con. It has a very good location being in the middle of a ton of nice restaurants and stuff. Even a movie theatre haha!

The events looked great and probably would have been great if the one time I went they printed out a schedule. Seriously there was no paper schedule. I think they had an app, but I have no US data plan so... lol. I did drop in on a couple late night viewing rooms and karaoke and they seemed well set up.

There are many hotels close by and a few of them are directly attached to the con center. That's pretty convenient especially if it's cold and rainy.

If you want a good area to take pictures there are lots of nooks and even a little garden/park. The park can be pretty busy though, but really there are a lot of opportunities.

It's a very nice con and I definitely did not mind travelling across the continent and missing Anime North for a year to visit. I'd do it again sometime, it's just hard to miss my home con. You know how it is.
    >> Anonymous 10/10/11(Mon)21:47 No.5052234
WOW. I had no idea it was this nice!

Welp, I guess I'm going then. I'll probably resurrect my old Heavy Weapons Guy for it. Just a couple other questions:

-When do tickets go on sale? I've checked the site and all I can find is info from 2011. Also, i found what I think is the official date on facebook... but I don't trust shit on facebook.

    - Where is it? Convention Center? Hotel? Some dude's basement?

    - Any recommendations as far as Hotels? I get discounts for Holiday Inns, Expresses, Etc.
    >> MrFreeman !KsSAk/XATI 10/10/11(Mon)21:49 No.5052247
I should really consider going again. Only went once, and it was all kinds of amazing.

    >FanimeCon always falls on Memorial Day weekend, so the 2012 dates are accurate
    >They just revamped their website for 2012...or so I thought, but anyways check back since they did tease the new site
    >FanimeCon is at the San Jose Convention Center, in the heart of downtown San Jose. Like what a lot of people said in this thread, lots of places to eat and chill out while not at con
    >Check back in January when they open up housing. Most rooms will run about less than $90 a night for both the Marriott and the Hilton, the two hotels connected to the convention center

Totally worth the trip. I absolutely love Fanime and have been going for 10 years. The artist alley is where I'm usually now but it's still just totally worth it to walk around and see all the amazing people. The convention center is fun and things like food are super close within walking distance but you can also order take out and a lot of the Downtown San Jose areas will deliver it to your hotel.

So yes, totally worth the two hours considering I usually drive 6 hours from SoCal to NorCal for it.
    >> G !!0KLJYlknxts 10/10/11(Mon)22:12 No.5052322
I LOVE Fanime with the hotels being connected to the con center and events going 24/7 there's ALWAYS something to do. I help run a panel there every year that's slowly getting larger and larger each showing. This is the con that I always welcome to friends as I've NEVER had a bad Fanime nor I foresee one in the future.

    I just jinxed myself there
    >> BoxMan 10/11/11(Tue)00:21 No.5052776
Fanime is the shit. Dont even question not going
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)00:26 No.5052790
Very fun con with some very chill people. I was a little disappointed when I first showed up because the venue and attendance was ( or seemed) smaller than expected, but once I met some people and was able to hang out through the whole night doing ridiculous shit, it easily became my favorite con.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)00:42 No.5052824
Fuck you, I'm 8 hours away and I'm still making the trip.

Yes, it's definitely worth it. The cosplayers are great, the artist alley is great, and the people are great. Very fun con
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)00:42 No.5052827
I don't even cosplay and I go. I pack a lunch and sit on a bench to people watch. It's a blast. You don't get entertainment like that often. Seeing Sauske get arrested was particularly amusing.

The staff are power hungry jews.
    Oh wait, I am one.
But really, it's quite pleasant and people always seem to find something to do.
Even at night. Lots of random encounters.

Dude I heard about that but what was the exact story? I heard he was trying to steal something from the dealer's room or something?

    >live 20 min. away from it.
    >never been there once.
    >> Anonymous 10/11/11(Tue)02:57 No.5053179
I spend $300 on flight tickets alone to get my ass to this con, it's that good. I've only had one bad experience when last year some douche kept pulling the fire alarms in the mariott. Other than that, nothing has ever happened except for unicorns shitting rainbows.

Even if I had to drive for 24 hours straight, I would still drag my ass to this convention. 2 hours is nothing. Go. You won't regret it.

    6 hours for me.

My husband and I both enjoy the con. It's the one real out of the way con we go to at this time. We stay at a the Fairmont which is about a block or so away. Even if it isn't connected to the convention center. It was still close by and convenient. Not to mention a nice hotel to boot.
    >> Masa D. Luffy !F9AXKingDI 10/11/11(Tue)03:07 No.5053204
It's the only con I know of that has a competent ball. :V If you're into dressing fabulous and having a ball, go.

The arcade ain't nothing to sneeze at (As long as they have the racing games and fighting games it's all good), and the night life is certainly good. Plus it's downtown San Jose so finding a place to eat isn't a problem.

Don't expect an amazing dealer's hall. It's alright.

I always have fun here. :v

That's actually funny, I bought more at Fanime's dealer's hall than I have at any other. It was like art book and figure heaven. Then again that's just my personal experience.

The Black and White Ball is great! Not a lot of cons can organize ballroom lessons and an extravagant ball at a great location that can accommodate around a thousand people. *end plug*

Seriously though, I don't see how anyone can be bored at Fanime. If anything, plan ahead to maximize your own fun.

    Totally worth going to!

Fanime is ok. Nothing special. Reminds me a lot of how Anime Expo was circa the year 2000. Not as big as some other cons and not as much to do, but can be fun depending on who you hang out with.

guy stole something from a dealer. got kicked out of the dealer's hall. Dumbass went back dressed as sasuke and tried to steal something else. Got arrested. This was at Fanime 2005.

    OP here again.

So, depending on how much I end up making at artist alley at a different con in January, I'm definitely interested in attending Fanime. Any idea when they'll post the new information?

Also, how big is the SJCC? I have a buddy who wants to come too but he's got a limp and we can't go too far with him without needing a rest every now and then. Plus I'll be toting a very large prop so I'd like to know for my own comfort as well.
