why do cosplayers never play dress up as characters they naturally resemble or at least have a chance or resembling with the right make up etc?

    http://images.4chan.org/cgl/src/1317619888737.jpg

pic above related. the guy dressed as Ryu in particular. he isnt muscular in the slightest.

why do you guys spend so much time making these (usually quite shitty) costumes when your physical resemblance to the characters you wish to become doesnt even extend as far as body type?

maybe you should go work out more?

    Fun

I do work out for the character I'm cosplaying but you know Op, have you ever considered seeing cosplay as just a hobby?

    care to elaborate?

If one does something for fun, then why would they care what other people think?
    >> Aesthetic Diabetic 10/03/11(Mon)13:55 No.5029773

i dont see the point of doing something that you arent gonna take seriously. particularly something which has potential to be quite elaborate and impressive if done well.

itd be like learning to play music, but having a really shit instrument. only knowing 3 chords. playing nothing but covers and not being able to sing well. not wishing to improve your craft. but still acting like it was a big deal to you.

As the Ryu, well... one of the Ryus in OP pic, it's done because it's fun. Hobbies and how far you go to look like the character are up to the individual and sometimes we may not all fit everything to a T. But long as we're having fun that's more important
    >> Anonymous 10/03/11(Mon)14:04 No.5029792
I'm a total perfectionist and I don't like wigs so I try to pick characters I like and look like.

But most people see this as a fun hobby so I don't see why weight, ethnicity or height should pull em back
    >> Aesthetic Diabetic 10/03/11(Mon)14:07 No.5029797
    >>5029780

fair point. but if not to take pride in your work, then where is the reward or fun to be found in cosplay? or are these people just easily impressed with themselves?

    >>5029771

im not telling you to justify yourself to me, im asking you to satisfy my curiosity. the fact that you assumed the former so quickly is interesting though

you don't have to be perfect to have fun. you can have fun with the whole process:

    >sewing
    >planning/drafting
    >hanging out with people who enjoy the series you're cosplaying from
    >making new friends who like the series and have similar interests
    >makeup/body painting
    >prop making
    >staying in character and acting like the character

it's not all about getting attention for looking like the character. getting there is the skill you need, not good looks. (though that's what makes people notice you more often...) idk that's just my opinion.

    >>don't use wigs
    >>perfectionist

Pick one, you can't have both. There is maybe the RARE character that a person could pull off who has normal, limp, unanimu hair...but that is most unusual. Granted, wigs can look really awful when people don't style them correctly but if the character has anything even slightly unusual you can always achieve it better with a nice quality wig and some skill.

so its basically a grown up version of this

    http://www.thefancydresswebsite.co.uk/images/products/large/kids_red_power_ranger_costume.jpg

except some people make the costume and other accessories themselves?
    >> Anonymous 10/03/11(Mon)14:14 No.5029815
The fun in the hobby is being as perfect as humanly possible (for me). I can see where other people have fun just by cosplaying though, I don't hate on that because I honestly wish I was those people. It's fun getting everything right when people notice it afterward, but while constructing something it sucks to have freak outs and break downs over the most unimportant things.

I do book characters and to a lesser extent vidya characters so usually no crazy animu hair.
I try to avoid wigs and contacts if I can.
    >> Anonymous 10/03/11(Mon)14:37 No.5029878
    >>5029818
Ah fair enough. I was kind of wondering if you did more obscure things like this as opposed to typical anime/manga cosplay. I am with you on the contacts, I would never buy them (mostly because I think they look ridiculous on people and because my eyes are usually the right color blue-green for characters).

Well not every costume I wear I take mega seriously. Ryu, it's a simple outfit, it's something I can trot around in, goof around. I have other costumes that I do take great pride in. Even some that are simplistic still. For me it's getting the attitude, making the outfit nice, and just portraying a character and having fun with doing so. That's where the pride in my work comes from and if anyone enjoys what I've done, that's a reward in itself. Everything else from there up is something I want for me.

    Party Rockin'

    i have another question

does cosplay always have to be cartoons and comics?

its never characters from live action media?
    >> Anonymous 10/03/11(Mon)15:03 No.5029946
    >>5029938
People do live action stuff. See Doctor Who cosplayers for example.

There's plenty of others who do shit like jrock and what not.

Why are you being a ghost for halloween? You aren't translucent.

Who cares, it's just a costume. We're fucking nerds in costume.
