  • Happy 8th Birthday, 4chan *click*

Server/posting issues should be resolved now.

Portland, OR folks: You are invited to drink beers, play arcade games, and eat delicious donuts.
The *tentative* plan is to meet up Saturday, at 10PM @ Ground Kontrol ($2 cover after 9PM, 21+ after 5PM), and grab donuts at Voodoo after midnight.
If anything changes I'll post it to @4chan on the Twitter (so follow it if you're thinking about coming).

Depends on the house. I know several Asian friends(not just Japanese) where you take your shoes off in the house.

I also usually take my shoes off when I go over to my in-laws house. My mother-in-law takes excellent care of the house and I take my shoes off so I don't track dirt around her nice clean carpet.

I have a Sikh friend who appreciates it when we take our shoes off before going into his house.

    I always forget to though.
He probably hates me for it.

My suggestion is always check what your friend/houseowner/etc... does. If they take off their shoes, you should too. If they don't, they probably don't care.

Its generally easy to tell; there will be shoes everywhere on the porch/on a shelf.
I dropped a Hmong friend off at her house one times and there were shoes all over the place outside her house...

    You'll be fine.

I hang out with a lot of my friends at their places(our my house)

My parents don't personally care if you wear your shoes in the house or not. But then again, my parents own too many cats and dogs and don't mop up the pee(they never mop the floor). So it's actually better TO wear shoes in my house.

Already decided when my husband and I get our own house, shoes go off and are left at the door.

This. I always remind me friends to take their shoes off when they come into the house.

I mean if you keep the floor clean there should be no reason to keep shoes on in the house, plus if you wouldnt walk outside barefoot why taint the inside of your house with bringing in the dirt from outside! I do most of the cleaning for the house so you can see the difference, especially when you mop

I mean I also take my shoes off when I go into a friends home, but if the carpet or the floors are dirty, or I see them wearing shoes, I put my shoes right back on. I mean I never really lived in a house where my mom let me set foot out of the foyer into the rest of the house with my shoes on, so usually I get weirded out and I feel bad when I wear shoes in a friends place

I'm Dutch and my family, as well as most of my friends' families, will ask you to take your shoes off in the hallway. As far as I know it's not really a cultural thing, though, just practical and comfy. I've noticed that people who own dogs tend to keep their shoes on indoors, but I'm not sure why.

I don't think I can speak for all of Canada, but where I'm from, one ALWAYS takes off their shoes when entering a house. This is only exempted if the owner of the house allows you to walk through to the backyard/garage or something and you're not staying more than a minute.

I've never understood why americans don't do this. It's common courtesy, and it keeps the place cleaner, and it's also a sign of respect.
In fact, growing up in a Catholic house, I wasn't even allowed to wear a hat inside, let alone shoes.

Funny thing. I'm Dutch as well and of all the households I've visited I can only remember one household requiring me to take my shoes off.

But I live in the city (Amsterdam) so maybe that has something to do with it? Assuming you don't live in a city that is. If so that argument is obviously void.
