What panty and titty shots have you seen in American animation versus the shit we suck in daily as "Oh, that's just how Japs are; did you know they also have public baths?!" as weebs? America obviously has untapped panty and titty shots. I mean, we have Bieber, why haven't we taken it to the next level? Are you a anti-sex sexist or something?

    you best be trolling.

Short answer: Nobody likes America except to laugh at us, so why would they have a convention celebrating our cartoons, which are mostly imported from Korea anyway?

I remember going to some college anime club and one of the otaku was all, "We should invite the Japanese students to our anime club!"

I asked the guy to imagine us being in some Japanese college, where some Japanese nerd comes up to us and asks "Would you like to join our American television club? This week, we're watching Family Matters, Seinfeld, and CSI!"

Japan loves America, where do you think anime even came from? It was ripping off Walt Disney for a lack of any swag on their own. If anything, it's AMERICA who should hate Japan. We dropped nukes on them, you don't do that to people you like.

Sometimes I wonder if liking anime is just some subconscious form of white guilt.

    Haha okay whatever.
I mean you're right that anime came from Disney originally, but basically Japan hates America. Every country puts up with America, but that doesn't mean they like them. It's fashionable for Japan to put Western words on clothes and speak English in their songs, but that does not mean they like us or would be willing to celebrate any bit of our culture.
Ben 10 and Spongebob are two of our cartoons that actually made it over there. Imagine all the cultural things that don't translate well at ALL. Our humor relies on puns and wordplay and crazy voices. They don't have sarcasm in Japan, they wouldn't understand a lot of things we'd find funny. Anime is more accessible by a wide variety of people, it's harder with the niche market of American cartoons which has essentially become Nicktoons, Disney movies, Adult Swim, and shitty daytime cartoons.

tl;dr: American cartoons are more of a niche market than Japanese cartoons, therefore other cultures wouldn't be as into it/ be able to understand it as well.

Japan barely has conventions for it's own cartoons I can think about 4 off the top of my head, and then a couple of media expos and a few small doujin conventions.

Japanese people tend to not like doing things in big groups, they're more akin to liking things in a small group of friends (like an anime club) rather then a big convention.

the u.s. is so fricking big and ppl are so widely dispersed, even within cities, that multiple, giant cons make sense. japan being smaller, with highly efficient public transportation systems makes it easier for ppl to get by with smaller gatherings.

u.s. > japan media is also less marginalized than japan > u.s. media. so there's less "push" to seek out like-minded fellows.

Howdy /v/, my name is Kenichi Smith.

I'm a 27 year old Japanese Toonaholic (Cartoon fan for you foreigners). I draw cartoons and comics on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior American games. (Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty)

I train with my 1911 every day, this superior weapon can shoot straight through steel because it kicks ass, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my gun license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak English fluently, both the Midwestern and the East Coast accents, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about American history and their Constitution, which I follow 100%

When I get my American visa, I am moving to New York to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Nickelodeon or a game designer!

I own several cowboy outfits, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I keep cool to my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

    Wish me luck in America!
    >> Anonymous 09/27/11(Tue)23:55 No.5013665
Wow ok. I read the thread and no one came close to the actual reason why, even if Japan had larger conventions/community organization, they would not have a convention around American culture.

While America was founded on breaking away from the group, and still is (grow up>leave home>settle elsewhere>make own life), Japan is founded on community (grow up>go to college>come back and live either near or with parents of one spouse>family forever functions as a unit). Being founded on community means putting your in-group above everything else. While someone may like an American icon, or music, etc, in the end the Japan-is-best attitude is going to win out. In fact, you are not going to find many people (outside of English Club at the college level) who know ANYTHING about American culture apart from ridiculous stereotypes. They do not value learning about other, less important, inferior cultures.

The Japanese people who spoke to you on your vacation in Tokyo are an aberration, not the norm.

The norm is being asked "What seasons do you have in America?" as many Japanese are taught that only Japan has all 4 seasons. Or being told that "Westerners are descended from hunters, that's why they are so war-like. Japanese are descended from farmers."

Their culture does NOT value diversification or knowledge for the sake of knowledge, which is the only way that someone would find out about fringe American media.

Actually Japan is one of the few countries that likes America, sure they have things they hate about us. However Japan's xenophobia makes them like us from a far, as in when we are not trying to live in their country.

Because anime and manga are ubiquitous in it's home country of Japan. In the US it's a niche form of entertainment. Japan does have anime conventions but they are not the same type of events as in the US, they're more like media expos. Another reason is that being an viewed as a otaku in Japan is a bad thing where people are expected to become salarymen and boozing off after work after college graduation. However, Japan does have cosplay events in individual stand-alone events or in larger fan-run conventions such as Comiket.
