let's fire up the bullshit wagon and examine the cosplay alias.

whose names are dumb as fuck?
is there a common format to cosplay names (i.e., the single japanese word, the "name-chan," the 'obscure' Latin phrase) that you just hate?
do you think that a name affects how you see that person as a cosplayer? as a human being?
    whose names are okay?
    >> Anonymous 09/27/11(Tue)18:51 No.5012299
I get kind of pissed whenever anyone decides on a Japanese name for their alias.

I like plenty of cosplayers who do it--Hatsuu, Katsu, etc.--but I almost always call them by their real first names, which I don't necessarily do with other cosplayers.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/11(Tue)18:57 No.5012324
AnimeAngel has one of the worst. "look at me! i'm the anime angel! i love anime and angels so much that i decided to put them together! lololol im' so spiritual and random."

i don't know if this is what she's really like, but that's what i think anytime i see her name.

I get kind of confused whenever someone calls themselves after a particular character.

Do you identify with that character so strongly that you think your alias should be their name?

Do you think you're the only cosplayer qualified to represent that character in a stupid costume?

    Jesus.

...gonna have to agree, animeangel's is pretty bad, but i also understand wanting to keep it. she's got a reputation, and if she were to just change her handle, a lot of her reputation wouldn't follow her.

..i am also relieved to know you were young when you made it
    >> Anonymous 09/27/11(Tue)19:41 No.5012559
I picked my handle when I was like 13. I used it for online Oekaki boards and Neo Pets and Gaia Online. When I went to my first anime con I used it as my handle for that too. Looking at it now, it probably comes off as a little weeb and I would probably pick something else if I were new to the scene but I've had it for so long I don't really care.

I guess for me the worst ones are when they just use the character name. You sit through the cosplay contest and it's "Next up is Naruto cosplaying as Naruto from the series Naruto!"

To be honest, I'm terrible at making screen names. I remember thinking I was SOOOOOO creative for coming up with "AnimeAngel". I was young an dumb and thought that only ten people liked anime at the time. Rufflebutt is the nickname my friends have given me recently because of my Madoka and Msyu costumes. I can't change it on dA though an I haven't used Coscom in years.

But yes tl;dr children are stupid.

Me at 16: "Cardcaptor Sakura is AWESOME, and I like fairies and sparkly things, so I'm going to be HanyaanFaery!"

Me a while later: "Let's just drop the "faery" because it sounds dumb and nobody can spell it..."

Me now: "Why was I such a weeaboo at 16 and why couldn't I have picked a cosplay name that people can actually spell?"

I don't exactly want to use my real name online, but I have a few other aliases I use other places which I like better. Hell, I even prefer my pretentiously-hipster-sounding-as-fuck Tumblr name to "Hanyaan". (it's "silencedrowns" and it is proof that i listen to dadrock constantly. oh my god all the king crimson.)

I don't know if I could ever get away with really changing "Hanyaan" though. Not only am I shit at coming up with screennames, but I've had this one long enough that it may be a pain to change. I'm not as badly off as AnimeAngel, but... yeah, I've definitely outgrown this name.

i've already explained mine on here a few times to people who asked. i was in a cosplay event in japan, and two girls from my class who brought me there realized last minute that i didnt have a handle, since no one uses their real names. they came up with "ten-chan" on the spot, i have no idea why. i think it was one of the names one of the girls originally wanted.

the next day at school we sat around and tried to make it longer, and somehow ended up with tenleid. they originally got lied since one of the girls loved Elfan Lied, and we changed it to Leid. thas the name i ended up using in all the events in japan, and it stuck.

i actually went by a different handle before this, and used it as my trip for about a month, but decided to go with my name in japan instead.

Thank you for pointing that out.

My cosplay name has been Death-chan for years. But that's only because a dear friend gave it to me. I've been thinking about changing it as of late because it sounds so weebish. But Lady Death is already taken by an animated title and it sounds so snobbish. Everything just sounds awkward. Guess I'll stick with my weeby name until I think of something better.

My main handle is just the name I've gone by for years and years and years online. Its actually kind of 13 year-old, goth kid lame when you get to the root of it, but to me its kind of moved past the how of the naming and has its own definition now.

For this name, I just didn't want to go by my usual name here. Had recently cosplayed Mad Moxxi, and fell in love with the name Moxxi. Add that to how much I love the 20s and the slang from that era, and there you go.

Because I have a thing for angels. I developed this imagined hierarchy of angelic culture when I was younger, and among my favorites of the angelic subtypes were the "sen'il." Seeing as I liked the word and the concept behind it, 'Senil' sort of became my name for all things internet. It vacillates between Senil and Elohiel, the latter being a combination of the word "Elohim" and the "-el" tag frequently added to the names of angels (Azrael, Michael, Uriel, Raphael, etc etc).

But basically, it's because I was a kid with an overactive imagination, a deep love of angels and a passion for making up words.

But I think you knew most of that already, my dear Kafka. The angel part, at the very least =)

I would also like to add that cosplay names with honorifics bring me back the days where my friends and I used to call each other stupid weeaboo names. As such, grown men and women that continue to use names that sport honorifics just... disappoint me, I guess. It's like looking at something that's just completely developmentally challenged, except that it's completely by choice.

Japanese names don't bother me so much. Yeah, it's a little weebish, but come on - we're cosplayers. There's at least a small trace of weeb somewhere in all of us. If the very worst of that is someone choosing a traditionally Japanese handle (without the honorifics, mind you), well, then - feel lucky, I suppose.

My current (and favourite) is Fables, it was a nickname given at work based on the fact it's an extention of my real name. I don't think anyone even calls me by my real name now, in favor of my nickname!

As for my trip. Fluttershy is my favourite pony, and I was watching MLP when I decided to start using a trip properly.

I came up with my trip because back when I was anon, a friend recognized it was me who posted because it had to do with Boris. So then so she would know who I was here in the future, I just decided to stick with it. The "Militsiya Officer" part was just added because hey, it's what he is. But people have just taken to calling me Boris and I'm alright with that. Though everyone is always surprised to find that I'm a female because of the trip and avatar. Sorry guys, it's really not my intention to fool anyone.

But the thing is, I just go by Boris here. I go by other names on other websites. It gets a bit overwhelming sometimes trying to tell someone that I'm x, y as well as z. Then again, that was my fault.

I learned how great having money is, and that I actually liked working as hard as I could to get something done.

but now I keep choosing Ninja characters.... I guess I still have a thing for ninjas hahahah. and I agree with everything people say about its too hard to carry your rep to another name. I had a chance to start over with my trip, but I guess I kinda messed that up too. I hand out contact cards when I cosplay so I can stay in contact with people I meet, so in Japanese, Business card -> Meishi. It also sounds like my name a bit.
but most screen names are pretty geeky. I'm a little uncomfortable that there is like... weaboophobia. I really enjoy the Japanese language and if I like a word, then I'll use it.

I made it based on a fox character I had at the time that I wrote short stories about. I later changed the focus of my dA from writing to drawing, and then to cosplay. I really should have just abandoned the account and made a new one for cosplay, but oh well. More often than not, I go by Mizza (an intentional 'illiteracy is cool' misspelling of a real-life nickname) on actual cosplay sites instead, though I do get people asking if I'm Viper. And my trip is Raticate because I never thought to trip until everyone was clambering to 'claim' trips when /vp/ opened up. So I adopted a trip for fun, eventually stopped visiting /vp/, and just kept using it here. The 'How are you going to wear that cosplay? You're a Pokemon!' comments in the progress thread make it worth keeping.

    Yep.

Gonna echo everyone else in this thread and say that it kinda hurts when someone's handle has an honorific in it. But aside from that, I can understand cosplay handles being a little derpy- we pretty much all made them when we were younger and don't feel like changing them.

I just didn't feel like hiding behind a fake name anymore. Not saying that using a handle is being fake. It was kind of a personal thing. I kept the BFI because it was kind of a persona I had built.

I use a handle because there are millions of other people with the name Sarah in the world. It's not about hiding, it's about being identified. lol

Take PT for example. Her name is Sarah. My name is Sarah. She is Pixyteriyaki. I am Magical Machete.

    Handles are sometimes very necessary.

I actually used to go by the handle "DerKraken" until I went to register with a few forums when I first started getting into cosplay. On a couple, this name was already taken, so I went to an old standby I had since 1999 when I first registered for AIM: "Volpinorosso"

Volpinorosso stemmed from a series of dreams I had for around 3 or 4 years which all featured, in one way or another, a red fox. When trying to think of a decent name to come up with on AIM that wasn't "XxnamexX" or chock-full of some number crap, I decided to see what "Red Fox" looked like in some other languages. "Volpinorosso" is a bastardization of the Italian translation of red fox, volpe rossa.

Eventually I dropped the "rosso" and have been going as Volpin ever since. Its odd sometimes to think how more people know me by the name I gave myself than the one I was born with.

I was always paranoid that people could find my real name online so I used various handles. I'd picked up my handles by using real words like Unfrightful. Before I even got into cosplaying seriously, I had a fake Facebook name because I was a very private person. I didn't even like giving my real name to people I met in real life.

So as I got more into cosplaying and having other cosplayers on my Facebook, everyone has known me to be Trick from the word Tricksomely. I like the name Trick because my birthday is actually on Halloween, plus being called a slang for a prostitute is also funny. Tricksomely came from being androgynous, some people can't call my gender from a glance.

I prefer to go by Kitty Anne, but most just call me Kitty. It's my real name, because I lack inventive brainpower, but it's somewhat unique in a way. Kitty is one of the more old fashioned nicknames for Katherine, so while I have met tons of Kates, Katies and Kats in my life, not quite so many Kittys.
Lord only knows why the fuck I made my name Yazoo the Kazoo on coscom. I had just finished my Yazoo costume, which wasn't even that good, and my nickname at the time was Kazoo, so I guess I was like "hurr durr, they rhyme."
Now I have to stick Kazoo on then end of my user names for people to make the connection.
Next chance I get, I'm changing that fucking screenname.

"Sniper Shark" is my alias. Partly because I play the Sniper-class (or just use a sniper rifle) on any FPS I play, and partly because someone compared me to a shark (ambush people during said FPS-es) one fine day.

    >> JillyBean !!JNfSKsTtdUC 09/28/11(Wed)02:43 No.5014200
I've used a few different ones, but I've sort of left my more weeb ones behind just to stick with my real name. Which is actually convenient since I dont have the confusion of some one calling me something other than Jillybean or Jill when they meet me at a con.

My real name is just Jill, but I've been called Jillybean by almost all my friends, and family. My big bro, who got me into video games which lead to my getting into anime and cosplay, was the first that I can remember to call me that. It's just stucked with me since then, even if I dont tell new friends that's my nick name sooner or later they ask if they can call me that.

I feel bad for folks who pick a weeb one, but gain some reputation with it so their reluctant to change it, or people whove tried to change it with little success. I'm not a huge fan of when cosplayres use a characters name for their 'cosplay name' either, it seems a bit pretentious to me.

My cosplay alias isn't actually my trip.

I picked my trip because I love the fuck out of ontological paradoxes, but my cosplay alias I just sort of drew out of the ether when I was trying to think of an AIM name back in like 2008. Since then it has been cited as the onomatopoeia for someone popping a boner. Multiple times. By multiple people. Apparently 'fashwiing' is the sound a boner makes.

I would change it but like half of my friends call me 'Fash' as a nickname now and it would just be too much trouble.

My nick here is a variation of a nick that consists from parts of my real name.

When I was a young-in, on my cosplay badge I'd put actual character names.

Now I have a bit more creativity, thankfully, but I usually stick with keeping everything to one word (whether on a cosplay badge or another site or whatever) Just because it's closer to a name I guess? I dunno. Sometimes I'll cite famous people, my most recent is based on a Belgian romantic painter, and other times I'll just throw some shit together. I don't really have anything too permanent right now, but then again I'm not doing a lot of cosplay right now either, so it's not necessary. Maybe when I hit up a con again I'll look for a more "static" name.

That being said, seeing shit like "blah-chan" is kinda dumb.

I used to use an old nickname from school that was a play on my name for forums, gamertags etc. Since I started cosplaying I've used moogle names and actually my current cosplay/con name originally had princess in it too, princess agitha was my first cosplay i made from scratch and i couldn't be bothered to come up with something imaginitive, but now its just abreviated to agi, which no one ever uses, most people know me by my real name

It's an alias you use instead of your real name. You use it on your convention badges, websites, ect. In Japan you absolutely do not cosplay without an alias. It may be borrowed from that, I'm not really sure.

A lot of people just like to keep their more personal information private from the entire cosplay scene and an alias makes that easier.
