Do you have any designs/styles in mind? What sort of game setting is it? Is it a private school? Lower-middle class school? All-girls/boys school? All of these are important. Are you looking for simplicity? Traditional? Complex? Bells and whistles? Elegance?

School uniforms are generally divided into three main styles in recent VNs. Blazer, sailor, and jumperskirts. Combinations or deviations from the main styles exist.

I'm thinking middle-class, more modern. I have a soft spot for the school uniforms in NGE, so I think I might try some kind of modified jumperskirt. I'm more stuck on what to do for the male uniforms. Blazer + slacks seem to be the most frequent male uniform design. I'm curious if there are any alternatives that have appeared in anime that could be of use.

If it's the NGE school uniform you want to model after, think about the cut and length. Dress shirt? Sailor-collar shirt? Details? Puff sleeves or none? Short or long sleeves? Stripes? School badge (on the upper arm or chest or back?) Ribbons? Where will the waistband sit? High-waist? Low-waist? How about the cut of the skirt? Mini-length? Mid-thigh length? Knee-length? Calf-length? Ankle-length? How about the skirts? Box pleats? Knife pleats? No pleats? Circle skirt? Ruffles? Underskirt? Stripes? More details?

Thematically the VN is pretty bleak. Melancholy, I guess. The planet has one month left before asteroid impact. Everyone is just quietly going about their last days, filling out their bucket lists to the best of their abilities and tying up the loose ends. It's my way of forcing mass character development; a plot device that makes each character walk through the stages of grief. Every person reacts to it differently. The hikkikomori starts to wonder if she wants to keep living her sheltered life, or if she should face her fears and leave her room. The reluctant honour student doesn't know how to act when there are no expectations left to live up to. I don't really want to set a tone of desperation. More of acceptance, if anything.

Hmmm. I like K-On!'s use of earthy colours and dark blues. I may consider a brown school uniform, but I risk it looking dull or unattractive. Any suggestions for ways to avoid this?

Earthy colours don't have to be boring at all. I think there's a lot to be said for them, especially given the theme; bright, garish colours would seem totally at odds.

Perhaps go for something simple and modest then? If it's just a VN not an eroge, then you can needn't be too worried about them being colourful and sexy. Saikano uses a pretty simple uniform and it fits the theme so well.

Brown X Blue can work, yes. The key is to have details to break up the drabby colors and pick complementary shades, adding white to balance out muted tones. See pic for an example of a brown X blue uniform that works well, in my opinion.

this is how I go about every choice i make. ever.

I was always a fan of a neutral tone, such as white, gray, or black, coupled with a vibrant color like pink or sky blue.

This style is rather typical of many visual novels as well.

I opened up some of my old .SAl files and replaced the backgrounds with solid gray, and screencapped the uniforms only.

Hope it gives you some ideas and such.
