Not my favorite book, but it wasn't bad. If anything, it offers good reference for literary discussion.

Going to be picking up a copy as a birthday gift to myself this year. Can't wait to read it.

    How old are you?
I'm older than you'll ever be
I've been dead a thousand years
And lived only two or three
    I don't mind telling you
My life was ended by your hand
The kind of murder where nobody dies
    But I don't suppose you'd understand
    Call off the search
    We've found her

    If I am Lolita
    Then you are a criminal
    And you should be killed
By an army of little girls
    The law won't arrest you
    The world won't detest you
    You never did anything
    Any man wouldn't do
    I'm Gothic Lolita
    And you are a criminal
    I'm not even legal
I'm just a dead little girl
    But ruffles and laces
    And candy sweet faces
    Directed your furtive hand
    I perfectly understand
    So it's my fault?
    No, Gothic Lolita

    Thank you, kind sirs
You've made me what I am today
    A bundle of broken nerves
A mouthful of words I'm still afraid to say
    I don't mind telling you
Now that I'm old enough to love
I couldn't begin to even if
My pretty life depended on it
    And funny thing, it does
    Call off the search
    We've found her

A book can't turn anyone into a pedo. if anything it brought his pedophilic tendencies to the surface, something that would have happened with something else eventually, if not this book

I love it. It is a great novel and is a great piece of the 'stereotype' of how europe is so 'cultured' and americans suck. Little touches like misspelled french to show how Dolores mother's shitty attempt of speaking the language makes it for me.

I don't care for her or this song. Though, I was introduced to it in a rather long car ride with some pretty obnoxious weeaboo types who worshiped her. Unfortunate.

    Is she at least underage?

If not. then he isn't a true pedophile. and i wasn't interested in him anyway.

I really enjoyed the first part (and oh dear god, the licking eyeballs part just killed me), but the second part dragged for me, even though the writing was consistently beautiful until the end. I definitely plan on reading more books by him in the future.

I found Nabokov's prose slightly too loopy at times, but overall it was beautifully written and extremely enjoyable to read. His narrator is just slightly unreliable enough (and the book is really about HH, not about the titular little girl) -- I think a lot of confusion arises when people mistake the narrator's voice for the writer's voice.

You can distinguish this from an ephebophile wankfest by the way the story takes a very realistic downturn in the latter third of the book. Compared to something like Death in Venice it's a much less romantic portrayal of people who want to touch little children.

I thought it was crap. But I think that about a lot of important classic novels ie The Great Gatsby
    >> Anonymous 09/26/11(Mon)03:41 No.5007248
I liked it a lot. Vladmir's got a way with words, even if this book is the reason my Aunt gets shit for her name.
    >> Parappa the Rapper !WIXxcJoFrc 09/26/11(Mon)03:44 No.5007250
I liked the first half of the book. Or the first 3/4ths of it.
then it just got painfully boring.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/11(Mon)03:52 No.5007263
It kind of made me feel weird. HH would never love a girl like me because I developed fast. By the time I was 14 I already had big breasts and hips. Is a guy still a ephebophile if he's attracted to young girls with womanly parts?

    Anyway...

I shook my head a bit when he started to measure the girl's hips and talk about how fast she'd be too curvaceous for him. And it's funny to me how no one really talks about the part where he says before he gets tired of her, he wants to have a child with her so he can rape/molest it while it's still an adorable loli. But then again this proves to me most people never actually read the whole book.

Everytime people tell me they feel sorry for HH's bad ending I really think they haven't read the whole book or just skimmed it since a lot of the things the guys say shows he's a nutty selfish disgusting prick.

    >>5007263
No one mentioned the fact that the book IT just stops for a preteen orgy, yet I assume the people who recommended the book to me still read it.

People skim/don't talk about the parts they don't like or feel ruin the meaning for them.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/11(Mon)04:00 No.5007283
    >>5007272
But I can't imagine skimming less than 50 percent of the book will lead one to a romantic image of the story.

The guy is nothing less than disgusting. Nothing he does is truly selfless, beautiful, or worth pitying him for.

Everytime I meet someone whose read the book they come with this tragic love story vision of the book and it just isn't.

The only "good" part of the book is seeing a kid who is at least "using" her abuser to some extent instead of being solely "used" and even that is debatable.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/11(Mon)04:07 No.5007290

    >Everytime people tell me they feel sorry for HH's bad ending I really think they haven't read the whole book or just skimmed it since a lot of the things the guys say shows he's a nutty selfish disgusting prick.

    This.
HH is an unreliable narrator, so I hate it when people take everything he says at face value. He's a giant douche bag, and people seem to always look past it. The guy's got serious problems.
Hell, even Nabokov said he's a horrible person.
What I hate the most though is when people describe Lo as just 'some slut who seduces this *~*poor innocent man*~*'. , which is complete bullshit.

That said, I loved the book. Some parts tended to get a little wordy, but overall it's still one of my favourite reads.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/11(Mon)04:12 No.5007298
This book is horrible. Not in a badly written way, just a gross way.
