At first I thought it was just my cosplay community that was bitchy, but nope, it's just cosplayers as a whole. Cosplay seems to breed drama.

I shall leave and never look back.

Every community breeds drama. Everything involving multiple people is inevitably going to have drama. Doctor Who fandom has drama. Every online discussion board has drama. Real life has drama.

The point is to get over the drama and do it because you enjoy it. You don't escape drama by leaving, you'll just find more elsewhere. You learn to get over it and do it for your passion of the hobby/lifestyle in question.

    This.
My grandmother recently learned to use the internet and joined several knitting, quilting and other handcrafty forums, and now every time I visit she eventually starts gossiping to me about how so-and-so said this and that and then this other person got banned for a week, only now that person was saying things on this OTHER forum, and oooohh so-and-so didn't like THAT. Also they're both really bad quilters, here these are pictures of how bad they are haha.
I don't even know these people! But really, wank is universal. Harry Potter wank, Homestuck wank, WoW wank, D&D wank, wank about cars... My favourite is science wank. My professors are constantly talking shit about each other behind their backs. I don't even want to know what would happen if they had an anonymous imageboard dedicated to discussing intracellular transport and exocytosis of neurotransmitter in the peripheral nervous system. Drama bomb!

Most of them are men in their forties, fifties and sixties, too. It's not just young girls who are bitchy, but it's more socially acceptable for them to do it openly.

    This.

I was in a Doctor Who group for a while when I lived in a different city and it was pure drama, gossip and nonsense. It put me off cosplay as a community for a while and then I realized that there are people like that in every community. I typically don't socialize at cons anymore outside of the people I room with, my girlfriend, etc. I do still organize shoots and what not, but I just know how to dodge the drama now and if someone tries to stir it up I either ignore it or just kind of walk away from it.

tl;dr : If you see drama, ignore it or just get away from it. Cosplaying is a hobby like anything else is, do it for the fun and the craft. Don't let the people get in the way.

Good. If you can't overcome drama and just have fun like a big kid then don't do anything for the rest of your life.

I didn't think it was drama either until I found out about /cgl/. I still couldn't give less of a fuck though. If my cosplay is predominantly made out of duct tape and craft foam, I'm still going to have fun at a convention and not be an anal retentive aspie about it. If I see a fat girl cosplaying Yoko, as long as she's a nice person and not a socially inept japanophile or a sexual predator, I will commend her for it.

I fell over laughing when I read this because I am subject to the exact same thing when I visit my grandmother. Actually it's quite amusing because when she tells me these stories all I can think is "Grandma, you're a troll." Sadly telling her this will inevitably lead to a lengthy explanation of what a troll is followed by an even lengthier dose of her on a soapbox defending her actions. Needless to say I keep my opinions to myself.

You know I never really knew the cosplay community had quite so much drama wank until I found out about /cgl/. I always knew that there were attention whores, bitches, and douchebag guys, but never on this magnitude I thought. Fuck, even the Japanophiles never bugged me as long as they didn't get in my way.

Honestly, the community isn't so bad if you just stay away from /cgl/ and ignore the drama. The only incident I ever had within my cosplay community wasn't even cosplay related, and it was just immature bastards making fun of other drunk immature bastards at a party.

If you truly have fun cosplaying and feel like you make friends doing so then other people's drama wank shouldn't stop you from doing so.
