You know, I really hate to start a drama thread, but something has really, really been bothering me.

I've been going to cons for over a decade now, and there is something I don't understand.

How is it that these beautiful, alpha cosplayer type people have the time, money, and resources to get all this shit done?

I mean, work out, stay thin, master some martial art, sing, dance, play WoW, make costumes, all-the-while keeping up with anime, videogames, movies, comics, internet, tv, etc.

It just didn't add up to me, so, out of curiosity, I spent the last few years diving in and researching this phenomena.

I'm not saying this is always the case. What I am saying is, it is disturbing how prevalent it is.

Whenever you see a alpha cosplayer, they don't work, they don't have jobs, they are usually in a situation that affords them unbelievable spare time..

They either have absurdly rich parents, a house of their own, a workshop, and somehow the money to fund this type of custom work, (costumes are absurdly expensive to make) some kind of government check for some bullshit aspergers or adhd or anxiety or something, or, particularly in the females case, a douchey rich husband/boyfriend who couldnt give a shit about any sort of fandom and just keeps her around and lets her "do her costume thing".

This is why I cant stand this culture.

    That is all.

    Thoughts?

    I dunno. I don't really care.

I just sew, make friends, and watch anime. I'm fine with doing my own thing.

Truth is, a lot of "alpha" cosplayers are poor as fuck. They throw everything they have into cosplay and related hobbies (games, gym, net surfing) to distract themselves from how disappointing the rest of their lives are. It takes guts to grow up and act like an adult, and it's easier to stick to doing the things you love and work a dead end retail job to pay the rent. They have so many leisure pursuits because that's literally ALL they do with their free time. Not looking to the future, just having fun in the present.
Hell, even college graduates with so much "potential" fall into that trap now cause the job market is so shitty.

    ehhhh kinda.
    But OP doesnt know shit.
"alpha" cosplayers dont usually have a shit ton of cosplays. They put all their efforts into one or two reallly good ones a year if that. And the effort shows in it. And i'm talking the actual good cosplayers, not the e fame seeking shit.

There are some that are yeah rich from parents with oodles of free time. Not everyone is by a long shot. Hell I have well off parents but they dont help me at all, I'm not an "alpha" cosplayer, as you put it, but I attend a lot of cons. How's this? 2 jobs. I go to school to. I have maybe one or two really detailed costumes a year, the others are quick, not as detail oriented, and really just for the fun so I can wear them for a con.

I know a lot of cosplayers are like that. It's a hobby, not my life. Everyone has a hobby. It's not a taboo subject, it's a myth. Simple as that.

3/10, got me to reply. And if not a troll, op is just very stupid.

I disagree honestly. There are a lot like that hell yeah, but a lot of cosplayers are working towards something, in school for something, or just young and enjoying themselfs a bit. I see no harm in that.

I sense a jelly old fag

I can't speak for everyone, but here's how I do it. I work in childcare which gives me a full two hours a day to myself during naptime, which then makes up for the crazy hours I get there in the morning and evening. The money's really good, and I don't drink much or keep mad expensive hobbies so I can afford to get good quality material. I've been cosplaying for long enough that I built up the skill to be a pretty fast seamstress and I can get quite a lot done in the aformentioned two hours when I bring my pieces to work with me.

I don't work out, I do regular yoga which counts as my physiotherapy for certain illnesses I have, I don't eat over 1500 calories and most of the time I'm on a raw vegetable diet. On top of all of that, I only do maybe three to four costumes a year, or maybe two good ones and a few lazy ones for dicking about at cons. I have plenty of time to spend with my friends and by myself catching up with books/TV/videogames etc.

Also, most of the really excellent cosplayers I know work and go to college, they find ways to afford their cosplay materials by scrimping in other places. If you're determined enough, it's not that hard.

they get monies from being sexy

you ever see an ugly alpha cosplayer? no

    maybe you too ugly
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)16:02 No.4943739
What really bother me isn't the trust-fund kid or trophy-wife "alpha" cosplayer, but those cosplayers who have the audacity to ask for donations on LJ/Facebook/whatever. Some people are going to be rich, they have all the time and money in the world to do whatever they want. It's true in cosplay and everything other possible activity.

However asking for donations to make a costume or go to a convention (from strangers or "fans") is completely arrogant, like "I'm such a good cosplayer you should pay for my ridiculous cosplay so you can have the honor of looking at me". It's a fucking hobby; if you can't afford it, work hard and save up until you can. I think the whole donations thing is more unique to cosplay, you don't see people in other hobbies try to pull that shit.

Who cares about the 'alpha' cosplayers? I mean really. Why let it get to you?

Just dress up and have fun. And let the people who feel like this hobby is a popularity contest enjoy living in their butthurt.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/11(Thu)16:13 No.4943770
Maybe "alpha" cosplays know how to organize and structure free time better than you? Perhaps instead of sitting on 4chan they're working on costumes or making money?

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Who gives a shit? If someone is dumb enough to donate, the problem is with them and not the person asking. The person asking for donations is kind of smart if they know they can get them. Capitalism, baby.
