Well I guess you could. Why would a white person cosplay a black character, though? I mean, you have all these choices.

they can, but if they don't have the bodytype they'll look extra-ridiculous due to extreme difference of skin color. if it's a tanned person in between black and white then is less noticeable i think.

    Related:

Is it racist to blackface up for a cosplay? Or is it just seen as a cosplay? I mean nobody objects to Homestuck trolls painting themselves grey, but grey isn't a natural skin colour.

    By and large?
Yes. Blackface doesn't actually LOOK right, it looks off, an uncanny valley effect. Thats why it was used in comedy for so long, it looks FUNNY, versus accurate.

    He also didn't go overboard.
There is a difference between putting on make up and what blackface brings to the table.

Exactly my point. He tried to do a faithfull characterization, not make fun of the character's race. (though a few jokes and laughs were had, certainly)

    Pic, same guy.

Oh right, I think there's some confusion here. I didn't mean like caricature blackface, I mean actually putting on makeup to realistically look black. Sorry!

I'm searching my comprehensive knowledge of all things sailor moon and I cannot think of who you are talking about. Pics please?

    >>4930832
I'm personally not fond of blackface because by and large whomever is putting the makeup on, puts it on wrong and they just look stupid. Go your color, its okay.

you're only problem would be hair. and even then you could get a black wig and style it appropriately.

Let me ask this: Is it appropriate cosplay to change colors (specifically wig and makeup) to fit skin tones. There was a gorgeous black sailor venus but she had this ridiculous butter yellow wig that went terribly with her color. Would it be okay if that wig were instead black? Or would that be violating the nature of the cosplay?

That actually sounds pretty cool, I'm sure I saw a picture of something like that. I think that was Sailor Moon, too, but I might be wrong

You can paint yourself a darker tone all you want, but the one issue will always be white facial features.
Black people typically cannot paint themselves white and expect to look okay. It always looks off, because African facial features differ greatly from Nordic and Slavic facial features.
Yes, there are some people that have dark skin and white features and vice verse, but it is uncommon. There was a show called Black.White. where they switched a white family and a black family through extensive make up. They did a good job of it, but they also chose people that facial could fit in in the opposite race. Pic related.

    ahh here's the picture.
You know, looking at it again, the wig doesn't seem so bad. Not as bad as I remember anyway. Though a more 'skin color appropriate' wig would make her go from the 9.7 she is to an 11

How about some light tanning? You might just some color in your skin depending on how pale you are.
