/cgl/ is a funny place where if you're good looking you're instantly allowed to self promote yourself and are "accepted." Otherwise you need to build your reputation here before you can participate in "normal" tripfag behavior (circlejerks, self posts, thread derailments, making the occasional jerk post) . It's allowed by people like God or Masa because they've been around and such behavior comes as no surprise from them it's just that some of the newer people instantly give themselves a trip and jump right into the antics. Instead of being known for who there are as a person and cosplayer instead we just associate these names with their general posting style and habits.

Least that's my take on the situation. I've only been here since 2009 so I guess you can still kinda call me new.

But looks factor a lot into it. If you're good looking (which is much harder if you're a girl) then people like you waaaay more. But if it's revealed you might/are fat or ugly, people will do everything they can to drive you away, no matter the cause. Though I have to say I really do miss seeing more actual costumes on /cgl/. I mean, some of the crush threads are cute once in awhile but I really feel like the sheer amount of personal threads has gotten absurd. I never used to mind them quite so much, because it was a chance to get to know a little more about the people in the community that I looked up to, or were curious about. But now I feel like I know too much about peoples lives and not enough about their "cosplay career" for lack of a better word.

Thanks, It's good to know that those long posts are being read, makes me look less like a twat than usual. I find the posting community's habits very interesting the observe and I often share my observations here cause I want to test how accurate they really are.

I really think the new wave of trips is reflective on /cgl/ has taken a turn toward the social side. While it was considered a stigma to admit you post here nowadays we go out of our way to arrange con gatherings and casual meet ups just to get to know each other. Because we already know who's going to which con it's a lot easier to get people to agree to meeting at the entrance of a convention hall as opposed to meeting up at IHOP on a weekend. These gatherings have been advertised as positive experiences and many people feel the need to trip to become "visible" on /cgl/ out of fear that if they attended these get together they will be met with "who the heck are you" gazes.

Visibility is a huge factor when it comes to a cosplayer generating their reputation. In general there are two types of visibility, "at con" and "cgl." The two categories are self-explanatory "at con" visibility means how frequent you're seen attending cons while /cgl/ visibility means how often you're seen on the board. Compare trips like Blue (who has a very high /cgl/ visibility rating but rarely attends cons) to Maguma who posts frequent here and attends a lot of cons.
