My roommate is still undeclared but wants to be a lawyer or teacher. I'm pretty sure if you end up as one of those, you'll need to stop cosplaying/lolita and attending cons. Or am I wrong?

ITT: Does your job or major prevent you from cosplaying/dressing up in lolita? Or will you have to stop after you graduate?
    >> ChupaxChupsxLove 08/30/11(Tue)22:31 No.4910995
Nope, I love my major because I GET to cosplay and dress lolita
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)22:31 No.4910996
Only if you get caught in something risque. If you look "normal" or "acceptable" enough, you'll be fine. If you have your breasts hanging out and word gets around, well, you've got trouble now.

When youre a teacher, you just have to avoid your students and not talk about it. AKA, if you run into a student at a con, you leave.

At least, that's what it's like in toronto. For laywers.. i'm not too sure. As a student she can continue, but as a professional? I doubt she'd even have time. Heck, i doubt she'd have time in law school either.

My last job was badass and no one cared. Probably could have worn lolita to work and it would have been fine, considering the number of dudes in utilikilts around the place.

Unfortunately, my new job is much more conservative (though it does pay more). People know I'm a nerd and that I go to the local nerd cons but I don't think I want them to know my true power level yet. Or ever.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)22:35 No.4911008
As long as you don't come to the office in a revealing outfit and don't link your online cosplay and professional profiles, I see nothing wrong.

I think a lot of employers are to going to be more lenient about this in years to come because your LEGAL hobbies are really none of their business and lawsuits flood in if they fire/discriminate against you because of them.

if they do a little legwork and find out about you while you're in the app phase there's not much to be done though. unless someone blabs secrets.
    >> OP 08/30/11(Tue)22:41 No.4911040
So I'm guessing after she graduates she'll have to delete her cosplay accounts and if she goes to a con wear something that covers her up to avoid any trouble?

Sorry for the crazy questions, just trying to make sure she doesn't (and myself too since I will be a teacher) get in trouble
    >> TikkiTavi !TaigaVQ/9E 08/30/11(Tue)22:43 No.4911045
Pft no, I just got my degree in political science and I still cosplay what ever I want

As long as you don't post it to your resume or on the website for your employer they really could care less

After she graduates or starts applying for a job that would be the time to start deleting those accounts and keeping any cosplay pics to private. Even setting Facebook to private would be a good idea if she has one.

My field could possibly prevent me from going to a con if I'm on call or something, but other than that, I'm probably okay with normal discretion.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)22:48 No.4911071
I think being an English teacher allows me room for some cosplay and con-going. We get many of the same breaks our students do.

However, under no means do I reveal my hobbies.

Na, she can keep those up as long as they're not like porn images which conflict with her/your districts code of ethics.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)22:56 No.4911104
I think it depends where she ends up. If she ends up in a small town it'll be better if she keeps it hush hush or quits. If it's in a bigger city, she needs to keep it discreet and not reveal her hobbies. It also depends what her employer wants.

I'm a Nephrologist. Haven't stopped attending cons or dressing in lolita. In my field of work there are lots of people who do silly things or have otaku hobbies (like star wars), though I've met some exceptionally weird people but they tend to work on the non-living.

The only thing I suggest is that if you have a facebook lock and keep it to friends only (and be careful who you allow to see your pictures). And just watch what pictures you do upload online.

FTFY. Well, more popular with the guys, less with the insecure middle-aged harpies.

I think it depends on where you're going to end up and what your friend would end up doing. If she wants to teach at a private Catholic school then yeah, she'll have to give up cosplaying or hide it really fucking well if she wants to keep her job. A public school, on the other hand, probably won't be as strict.

Same goes for law. If she wants to go into business law or a high-profile firm then she'll need to either drop cosplay entirely or again hide it really, really well. Actually, if she wants to go into law she'll probably have to cut way the fuck back on her cosplaying. On the one hand, there's the issue of time. And on the other hand, advancement in the law field is basically based on who you know and how much they like you. People are more likely to like you if you don't have weird hobbies, meaning cosplay and lolita are kind of a no.

The only worry I have is if my art supplies end up anywhere near anything. Other than that, I'm pretty sure art students are like required to dress up in bizarre things.

Be careful with what you post online because it can come back to bite you in the butt later no matter the job.

    I agree with >>4911058 and >>4911173.

Both of you will need to just need to watch out after you graduate and/or begin the job hunt. If you have any questions, see if your college has some sort of place that can help with career related stuff. They might be able to tell you how to keep things hidden or what to delete.
    >> OUTRAGEOUS 08/30/11(Tue)23:31 No.4911241
I actually got my teaching job partly because I'm a huge nerd. They needed a Gifted teacher last minute and knew I hadn't found a job yet and that I was a huge nerd. I never thought mentioning that I do "costuming" to a parent and administrator would be a plus for me.

Now I definitely don't publicize it. Such as, I'm taking off on Friday to go "visit friends out of town." It's not technically a lie.

But for advice. I killed my cosplay accounts. My pics are only on a friends only facebook now. My nice students were finding crap easily once they knew my most common username online. Beware Google-fu. Now it's never a problem. Most kids won't go to the effort to find a generic cosplay photo site and look painstakingly for a teacher on it. Also, if one is a teacher and shows photos it'd be good to do minimal slut costumes.

I have a friend who is a cosplayer who is just about to be a lawyer. Her cosplay fb is friends only and she has a normal one under her real name for easy access to emlployers.

It's doable, you just have to be less of an attention whore on the internet basically.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)23:33 No.4911250
Be an engineer, like me. If your coworkers give you shit for going to cons, there's a good chance you can remind them that they've been going to Burning Man almost as long as you've been alive.

Which is the more wretched hive of scum and villainy? Well, to begin, people tend to wear clothes at anime cons...
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)23:37 No.4911270

Not to mention it's the one place on Earth with less showering taking place than an anime con.
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)23:44 No.4911300
My friend is a teacher and attends hella cons. Not a cosplayer but he does run the anime club at his school and we are always running into his students (in cosplay) at cons. I am the cosplayer and he doesn't really seem to be bothered to get caught with me by his students.

I was a teacher in Japan and went to school cosplaying Princess Peach for Halloween :D

With cosplay, I need to be a little bit more discreet about it when it comes to my job. My employers don't care so much, which is nice cause my co-workers are a bunch of nerds anyways.

The problem lies with the clients. I'll be working with families going through problems which results in their child's safety being compromised and if they google my ass, and see me with cosplay pictures all over the place, my authority will be diminished. So yea, I have to keep that shit discreet as much as possible.

I've gradually shifted my focus from cosplay to my career and education, but I'm not going to let my job get in the way of my hobby, I just have to be more aware of what's put out there with my name attached.

totally wrong OP. My boss is a teacher at my college. He went to comic con and drove me and my sister there on day 0.

My major is art. and my end job is working for cartoons, comics, and vidya games. so Comic con is in the future still and cons I would hope as well. But family and living will come first. End of story.

Exactly. Like I said, my employer doesn't care that much since people in the social work scene tends to all have some sort of story, its only when my clients get a hold of it and seeing as how I take client confidentiality very seriously, I don't think emails of clients will be getting into anon's hands :T
    >> Anonymous 08/30/11(Tue)23:53 No.4911331
I keep my cosplay stuff and personal life separate. Friends know not to tag me on FB in cosplay pics with my personal account and vice versa.
Cosplay accounts are attached to an entirely fake name and I have a different email account that I post with my cosplay ones as well.
I use my real name on my normal Facebook account (though it's still a friends locked account) and I use my school email that has my real name on it for school/job/work stuff.
