Due to a shipping error, I didn't receive the bolts I needed for finishing Quorra, so she is postponed until NYCC. I'm sad, but I'd rather do it right than rush it. Plus it gives me more time to work on the lighting channels.

Instead I will probably make Leeloo from the beginning of Fifth Element instead.

At this point, I'm not sure if they would be any reason to prereg, you won't get a QR postcard. I thought I saw some weird QR generator though...

    http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_pde_barcode.htm

    >For those of you who are paying on-site, you can shorten your time in line as well. Click here and fill out the form, submit it, and it will generate a .pdf file with a QR code that you print and bring to the on site registration area at the convention. This form is not connected to any database, it is merely a utility for printing your own QR code. The QR code will contain all your demographic information, mildly encrypted and base64 encoded. As always you will need to have a valid government-issued photo ID with you as well to complete the on-site registration process.

This is going to be my first Dragoncon and I am so excited. I had a question though: are there any microwaves available in the con, the hotels, or any of the surrounding stores? I will not be staying in a room at the con and wanted to be able to heat some food if possible.
    >> amethystcitrine !!JrYqIZQBl5A 08/31/11(Wed)00:42 No.4911476
    >>4911441
Why not just bring food you don't have to heat? Or just buy food in the area? That seems kind of weird/inconvenient to depend on.
    >> Anonymous 08/31/11(Wed)00:50 No.4911495
    >>4911476
I am bringing food that doesn't need to be heated, but I had some soup (the kind that is in a plastic type container that you heat, open, and eat) that I wanted to eat while I was there, just to get some warm food in me. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so eating out can't really happen. If It's not possible, it's cool, I was just wondering.
    >> amethystcitrine !!JrYqIZQBl5A 08/31/11(Wed)00:53 No.4911500
    >>4911495
But there are lots of cheap options for food in the area...albeit, fast food.

I guess I am just whiny/fidgety enough that I'd pay a little more for food if it meant I didn't have to carry food around all day. I understand budget constraints though. Sorry I am not at all helpful!

This weekend, remember gentlemen: Spraying yourself in bucket loads of Axe does not count as a shower. Contrary to what the commercials say, Axe actually smells repulsive the majority of the time. As such, trying to cover up your stench with Axe just results in you smelling like a cologne factory took a piss on you after you just did 10 80's style training montages. SAY NO TO CON FUNK: TAKE A SHOWER DAILY.

Oh god yes thank you. Any over-applied deodorant smells disgusting in my opinion, but I can't be around someone wearing an overdose of Axe without literally gagging, tearing up, and having to leave the room. All my male friends think it smells good and several of them even think it's a great idea to apply that shit when I'm around. One of them uses like three seconds worth of spray under each armpit and urghuaughaughaughr.
    Fucking Axe.

I'm a bit worried about registration though. I was planning on picking up my badge once we arrived in Atlanta Friday evening, but now I'm thinking I won't have time to before registration closes. I really hope the line isn't bad tomorrow, but hopefully it won't since I've pre-registered and paid plus the new system.

I still don't know about changing costumes mid-day though, because again, I'm not staying on-site. I'd really like to change at the convention, but I imagine using the public restrooms to do so would be a bitch with as many people as there will be. Ugh, what do?

I think I may be hearing this from a lot of first timers. D*C is an event where you MAKE new friends more than you converse with friends you already know. People you already know want to go here, then there, and then you end up missing whatever it is you wanted to see. The con is too big and bountiful for chilling with more than one group for 15 minutes.
You go to an event and talk to people there. Almost everyone is over 25 and can successfully converse with someone they don't know as if they had already been a friend. Hell, I made great friends with the 6 people behind me in the reg line. We talked about voltron, tattoos, ways to improve reg, stuff we wanted to see, and the new D*C app.

Omg though. The trek to the Westin is too much. Uphill and far away.

Hey, I might go to D*C next year, so I have a couple questions.

What were registration lines like? Were they all long as hell, fairly quick moving or what?
How was security? Last time I went I only got stopped for badge checks a few times here and there, do they do that more often? I've heard about the hotel card rule, but what is it specifically?
Did the Hyatt turn into a bunch of dicks again, not letting people in, or yelling at people for taking pictures?
Is the overall general experience still fairly chill?
Where are the crowds dense and sparse? Pretty good odds I'll be taking BF with me and he can't stand large, loud groups for extended time periods, fucks up his ears due to tinnitus, so we'll need to find quiet places to rest.

This is my first Dragon*Con but people tell me the security at the doors and on the walkways was pretty tight this year. Late at night they were stopping EVERYONE that passed through.

The hotel cards let you get into the hotel and through the skyways. You still need a real badge to get into panels and the dealer room.

AFAIK the Hyatt has been pretty swell. The environment all around is very chill.

If you're looking for quiet environments to relax for a minute, the emergency stairs in the hotels are always open and are typically empty. Great for people who don't want to wait 5 minutes for an elevator, like me.

You only need the hotel roomkey if you want to get to the room floors right?
It just seems pants on head retarded to require people to have a roomkey to every hotel just to move between the hotels to see the con.

As for the Hyatt, the last time I went, late at night they closed their doors for some reason, but sent people around the hotel saying the other entrance was open. A group of people, including my group, watch for like an hour as the same groups of people kept circling the hotel. They also had security freaking out about people taking pics in the lobby during the masquerade, when no one was in the lobby. I can understand not having people stop for pictures before and after the masq, when it's crazy crowded, but there were all of ten people in the lobby and they flipped shit over a quick picture.

Dragon*Con actually has special roomkeys just for the event. The hotel keys for all the hotels ALL look the same.

Also, I was just in the Hyatt and HOLY FUCK Sephygoth is there in costume (Picture related - it's also got some big wing things on the back and some banner things hanging off of it and stuff) with his hot girlfriend.

The construction on this one seems to be a LOT better. I remember a couple months ago someone posted close-ups of Astaroth and the face was horrifying up close. This outfit's face actually looks real good up close and in person.

She told me he was there last night dressed in his Astaroth. UGH can't believe I missed that.

I was recommended by too many people to go.
    But...fuck it'll wreck me financially.
With SDCC I just stay with friends and the drive is $60 in gas, if that.

Dragon*Con will involve flying across the country, hotels and probably mailing my costumes because I do NOT want to put those on the plane.

So all the hotels, the host and overflow hotels, have the same style key as proof that you paid to attend the convention?
Sorry if I'm not understanding this, it just seems like a weird policy.

AND, on second thought BF may not be going because every time I mention a convention that looks neat he starts up with 'blahblah, bunch faggot furries' or 'blah blah, faggot nerds living in mom's basement'.
If I go, it'll probably be me and my dad chilling around the con.

Not really digging either of their costumes to be honest.
Just don't do Menace if you can't do under boob. I'm sorry but it looks shitty; there's nothing exciting about a flesh toned bra that doesn't match your skin tone. At least extend the top down like some Japanese girls do.

They're both cute in the face, and brownie points if they actually like the series and aren't doing it to attention whore (so many do and it gets on my nerves as this is my fandom), but the costumes ain't gelling. At least the Menace is deliciously brown.

Volpin is in the fucking ZONE, though. "There is a guy in an ORIGINAL Battlestar Galactics Cylon suit, and I NEED to take a picture with him." So he checks the voltage on his Daft Punk helmet (which is fucking amazing and I got video of all the visor lightning modes) and the voltage meter is broken. He heads up to his room with Freeman and I didn't see either of them for the rest of the night. Damn.

    >what's your main complaint?
I didn't understand why the program was set up in "tracks", and now I know. If you want to see programming, you NEED to keep it to one track, because it will take you GODDAMNED FOREVER TO GET TO ANOTHER TRACK. The amount of walking to not get anywhere within the hotels was ridiculous. I had no ideas which levels had a skybridge or not, what level had an artists alley or if it was a dealers hall. The layout is absolutely atrocious for how massive this convention really is! On Saturday, I spent more time walking than I did actually doing or seeing anything! I got lost at least 10 times, 4 times I ended up missing something I wanted to see/do.

At SDCC, there is always things to see when getting from point A to point B. Here, there are cosplayers walking by too quick for a photo, or just standard hotel atmosphere... it was very boring.

    >Either you're just socially awkward or just the kind of person who just wants to be by himself for awhile.

This is my other problem I had at the con. I am a very, very outgoing guy and not shy at all to make new friends, but I got snubbed by just about everyone I tried engaging conversation with. I tried all tactics, including ones I don't normally use just to try to friendly join into a group or conversation. I have literally never met such a large gathering of rude people in my life.I don't know if it's all the drinking and partying they do that gets to their head or what, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to talk to almost anyone. I did make a few new friends however, and will be talking with them after the con for sure.

i can understand the complaint about the layout, but realistically there is no other choice for the venue in atlanta. the ga world congress center is a better layout for sure, but no hotels attached to it make that a MAJOR problem, not to mention that D*con is held on the same weekend as major football events and the congress center is next door to the stadium. that will NEVER work. I liked the app feature this year, it helped me navigate a bit easier. sorry you didn't have an amazing time, but maybe if you decide to come again, you can come to the /cgl/ meet and make a few good friends before things get started.

I'm sorry that this is going to be a pretty standard response but next time.. Ask for directions.

There were staff EVERYWHERE. I didn't get lost once even though I had to walk from the Hyatt to the Hilton every day. Yes, the levels to skybridges was confusing... But staff are everywhere. EVERYWHERE. I'm talking hotel staff, not con staff. After you get to the level you need, you just follow the signs. There's never a reason to get lost that many times if you're asking for directions.

I'm sorry you didn't have a good time.

And if people were rude to you.. surely you must have been offputting. I can't remember hearing that response from many people. Especially not "everyone was a dick". (It also sounds like an exaggeration. But everyone in this thread knows at least one group that would have answered you questions kindly or chatted with you.)
Maybe you didn't remember that people always always have somewhere to go at D*C? Maybe they had somewhere to go. Especially if you're chatting with them on costumes. Some times there were on their way to go somewhere.

Also, hopefully you weren't expecting everyone to just be your friend and let you follow them around.. That's a pretty risky thing for people to do, to invite you to their room.
And besides that, even groups of friends are ALWAYS spread out doing there own thing, especially if they're going to panels and running around.

I'm sorry.. I just... don't understand how you could find everyone to be so rude..
    Are you a foreigner?

Hell, you were on /cgl/, obviously. You could have asked here. "What levels are the skybridges on for each hotel, and on which side." Then could have written it down.

But again.. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your first time. I didn't enjoy my first time either. But that was my fault for who I roomed with (their company was far from entertaining, and I knew that's how they were) and for not hanging out with some other people during my day there.

Well, there's yer problem. I hate to say this, but I find that cosplayers are often significantly bitchier than people dressed in street clothes. Not all of them of course, but enough to where it is noticeable. Maybe they are hot and sweaty and uncomfortable, maybe they are dicks and just think they are better than you; I have no idea. Next time, try more people who are wearing just jeans and a t-shirt and see if that helps.

Yeah. And he has to remember.. it's D*C, but a dozen other people thought to ask those people the same questions. They probably didn't want to go into detail about it.
Whenever I was approached about lolita I answered politely but gave quick simple responses because I had places to go. There was couple from ATL that stopped me while I was outside the con, in a VERY hot coord and uncomfortable heels, and they really wanted to strike up conversation, but I had 2 people standing a few feet away for me, waiting for me to continue following them. I chatted for longer than was polite for my friends because the couple had genuine questions about the con.
But I can imagine a cosplayer being uncomfortable and cranky about being stopped trying to go somewhere, with someone asking the same questions as everyone else. They probably wanted to talk about other things at that point, or not be forced into conversation.

In my experience, people (even my friends) are more likely to be cranky about people stopping them while they're in cosplay. Every time they came back to the room they would say that while they were on the phone or running to go somewhere, someone would stop them and try to have a conversation or asking for a photo. So they ended up rushing to change and make it to their next organized shoot.

People in jeans and tees are probably more comfortable, chillaxin', and don't have photoshoots to run to, or haven't been asked the same things before besides directions.

    >Maybe you didn't remember that people always always have somewhere to go at D*C?
Most of the people I attempted to converse with were people who were either standing or sitting around me and who had been for a few minutes, unless I was in line with some of them, and they looked at me for a second or two, and I would say hello to see if that sparked up any conversations.

NOPE.avi. Would never do anything like this because I can't stand the people who do this to me. Also, following strangers, unless you know you are both going to the same area/panel is just not really a good idea.

    >Are you a foreigner?
    >Did you cosplay and get lots of compliments there?
No, not a foreigner, just out of state... which depends on your definition I guess. I did cosplay, and there were a few people who complemented and liked my Freeman, but very few people cared about Mecha, mainly because I was with Jessie's Maetel.

    >>4934556
There were a fair share of people who were not in cosplay I could actually converse with, but there were a lot of them that after a minute or so trying to talk with them, they wanted to become "too" friendly and give me their life story and everything they wanted to see here at D*C. I politely took it, but some of them obviously seemed to have some sort of mental handicap, which was unfortunate.

    >>4934800
Again, I never really interrupted people unless I felt I needed to. I only ever talked to cosplayers or people who were stopped near me, and it was obvious they were starting or already shooting the breeze.

Got home around 6pm yesterday. Slept from 7pm-9am.

Ignoring a lot of crap that happened, D*C was fun. Was really fun cosplaying with Mr. Freeman, then later Zaid. Was even more fun trying to explain the plot of GE999 to people who had never seen it.

Finally got to meet Volpin, we geeked out about Tron. Pic related, I beat him up and stole his helmet. I was trying to hold it off my pompadour, but it just looks like my chin won't fit, which makes it ten times funnier.

I also got to meet Precious and Todd. It should be illegal to be as hot as Precious is in person. Also as tall. Hardly fair. Both were quite awesome.

Still trying to remember a goof portion of it. Looking forward to photos.

It was great to see you again! I really wish Matt and I had bumped into you earlier so we could have hung out more. Did he get any footage of you, btw? I don't remember.

    >>4935708
Shit man, I really don't know how things went so wrong for you but I'm really sorry. I'm generally too busy to worry with programming so I've never really had any problem with it. I will say that last year I got lost again and again and again though, even lost my car and had to spend all of friday hunting it down. But it was STILL the best con I had ever been to. I think you should try it again next year but just screw buying a badge. Regardless, it was great running into you again and I wish we had hung out more (or my phone would stop freaking out/getting lost for at least ONE DAY so I can contact people.)

It was also cool running into Kamui, wherever the heck she is.

You know its wierd. This was my first time at D*C. I ABSOLUTELY loved it. Yes, the first day I was completely lost. But I gained my bearings Saturday, had a great time and a blast, made tons of new friends. Got to meet Fev and Volpin, and got to see a shit ton of great panels.

And unlike Mr. Freeman's experience, everyone was super friendly and I had no problem talking to anyone, neither did my GF or my HIGHLY introverted friend. In fact this was the first time I've seen him be any kind of extroverted, it was a good change.

Needless to say, going back every year now.

Yeah, I feel for Mr Freeman, but my Saturday and Sunday involved getting wasted and handing out High-fives (and fuck yeahs!) to anyone with any costume I could recognize.

I will state that if you want to throw a room party, don't do it in the Marriott.. 30 minutes between people showing up and security shutting it down.

Making it to the meet-up was on my mind, until I got smashed both Fri. and Sat.
Goddamn I had fun this year.
And some of the costumes were amazing.
Will try to up some pictures after re-sizing...
My only complaint is that Sat.is too fucking crowded...

Sat didn't feel nearly as crowded this year as it has in the past. Especially in the Mariott. I'm glad they were checking badges at the doors.

I'm considering going again next year to catch the stuff I missed on Thurs/Fri. And yeah, totally wished we could have chilled more, and I managed to catch a pic of your She Hulk, which rocked!

As for Kamui, we spent today at the mall, coke museum, and the aquarium with her husband. It was awesome!

    >>4936350
No way! In fact, it was finally seeing your Maetel in person which pretty much made the con for me!

I also loved my fabulous roommates. Without them, this con would have been something I would have never considered going back to. They are the redeeming factor of the entire con. Love you guys!
    >> Anonymous 09/06/11(Tue)21:36 No.4937753
I was concerned that this year's D*C wasn't going to be fun because a couple of the guests whom I wanted to see had canceled. Also, through the course of the con, some of the panels got canceled.

I still had a blast! I either found different things to do, or just walking around taking photos is fun.

I would say I encountered 50/50 nice/mean people. I tried to talk to people in line, and it could go either way. I did end up making a friend in line, though, which is always fun.

I noticed there were a LOT of first-timers this year. I had a lot of people ask me where certain panel rooms are, and I was happy to help them out. As far as going from one hotel to another for different panels... I don't just follow one "track". You just have to add travel time to your schedule (account for 10-30 mins lost in travels depending on where/when you're going). I had no problems going from one hotel to another and getting into panels. I just know that for some, I'd better get there early to get in line, while others I could just walk in.

It's what you make of it, and I suppose the con isn't for everyone. Just because one or two people snub you and are rude doesn't mean everyone is.

Dragon con was such a breath of fresh air. Precious and I had such a good time being able to hangout with people we already knew, and new people we just met. It really is a four day long party.

We saw such good costumes such as a pretty much perfect Tali from ME2, and Volpin's Thomas helmet which was pretty awesome to see in person.

I don't think I will be able to look at other cons the same way.

First time for me at DCon, had a blast the entire weekend except one of the GL!Hal cosplayers from the SCF was kind of a dickweed.

His crowd control skills were lacking and he needed to get over himself that there were other guys there costuming as Hal. Purposely ignoring other guys' inputs and excluding them from photos? Dick move.
